I am very confused about this format. Initially it's held in 3 different cities in europe then final is played somewhere. can someone explain ?

The Davis Cup by Rakuten Finals will take place across three cities on 25 November - 5 December in 2021. Madrid, Innsbruck and Turin will each host two of the six groups, with Madrid staging two quarter-finals, and Innsbruck and Turin one quarter-final each. The Spanish capital will also host the semi-finals and final.

The Finals will feature 18 teams:

- 12 qualifiers - Australia, Austria, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Sweden and USA
- The previous year’s four semi-finalists - Spain, Canada, Great Britain and Russian Tennis Federation
- Two wild card nations - France and Serbia

The 18 teams will compete in six round-robin groups of three teams. The six group winners plus the two second-placed teams with the best records based on sets and games won will qualify for the quarter-finals.

The Davis Cup champions will be crowned after the completion of the knockout phase.

The two finalists will automatically qualify for the 2022 Finals. The teams finishing 3rd-18th will take part in the 2022 Qualifiers. Two nations from the Qualifiers will continue to be eligible for wild cards into the Finals.

Pretty much a carbon copy of the 2020 ATP Cup tbh. Three cities hosting two group each of three nations. Top 8 make the QF stage and meet in Madrid.

Russia is in Group A, Serbia is in Group F. If both nations win their groups and their QFs, they'll meet in the SFs this season.

Also look at this Sinner isn't playing for italy for some reason........... This is great chance for USA. USA has all the best players they got playing. GO USA

I don't know what you're talking about. Sinner hasn't pulled out of the Davis Cup, as far as I can tell. Berrettini has and I think Musetti has, as well. Sinner, Sonego, Fognini, and Bolelli are the team as I understand it right now.

It's a shame he wasn't this motivated to even try to get Stojanovic a bronze medal in Tokyo. I know he had his reasons and there may have been some minor injuries but still, it was probably (and may always be) the highlight of her career and she didn't even get to play.

This Davis Cup should be pretty interesting though. As I said in another thread there will be some interesting matches especially Russia vs Spain. Medvedev and Rublev against Alcaraz and Carreno-Busta should be good matchups. Also a potential Djokovic/Medvedev in SF, that would be awesome.

Too bad some of these matches will he held in empty stadiums. The new format of Davis Cup doesn't please me either. I prefered when it was BO5, with BO5 matches and different surfaces. I think that's why so many top players are boycotting this competition since 2019. The pamdemic doesn't help either, obviously.

No one is commenting on the Davis Cup matches? Or are there separate threads? I can't find any.

Very sad Alcaraz had to pull out. I was looking forward to seeing him against Rublev or Medvedev.

Cilic vs DeMinaur was an excellent match today. Those 2 are a great matchup, their games complement each other well, I noticed it in USO 2018. There were a lot of spectacular points again. Gojo (who?) beating Popyrin was a huge upset, on the other hand.

If Djokovic plays tomorrow against Austria, we may have the first official Novak vs Djokovic. :)

Isner's serve looks like Errani's in this match lol. Sinner returns with such ease. Has Isner ever been BAGELLED in his career?
