Did Yonex make history with Stan?

Trying to think if Yonex ever endorsed any singles player who won a major. Stan Wawrinka might be Yonex's first player who wore Yonex shoes shirt and shorts and played with a Yonex racquet to win a slam title in singles.

I don't think Hingis won in Yonex, Seles and Hewitt did not win in all Yonex. Nalbandian never did.

Let's figure this out...

Has any player ever won a major singles title while sporting the attire shoes and racquet of the same company?

Stan might be the very first one. For Yonex.

Didn't Lendl win some slams with all Adidas stuff, including racquets?

And to answer your question, I believe Martina Navratilova was the first Yonex slam winner. I don't think the full apparel question matters since there aren't many companies that make their own racquets and apparel (especially that can afford to keep Nike, Adidas, and now Lacoste from wanting to sport their apparel for them).

Technically, I don't think that was actually an Adidas racquet. It was originally a Kneissl, which Adidas copied. But I guess the question was 'endorsing', so maybe it counts?
Andres Gomez won the 1990 French open defeating Agassi with a Yonex - may have been an R22.
He's talking about 100% Yonex, head-to-toe.

Yannick Noah in 1983 French Open win was decked out in head to toe Le Coq Sportif and using the Le Coq Sportif TCO racquet. Ivan Lendl was also in head to toe adidas and playing with the adidas racquet GTX Pro and then GTX Pro-T (Which Adidas made under license from Kniessl. I have both a Adidas GTX Pro and Kniessl White Star Pro Master).

Again I'm not sure why it matters. Yonex doesn't sell many apparel items to amateurs and is probably one of the few companies that can afford to endorse top ranked players (probably because it's a Japanese company that I believe doesn't have many debts). You won't see much Yonex apparel on the public courts of the world so naming it the king of tennis is a little...much. With that said, they make GREAT frames and the QC is unmatched in my opinion. I've heard nothing but great things about their shoes and their apparel is not too much for the lame, classic folks and not too boring for the eccentric, gaudy folks.

I guess VSBabolat has proven the point then...Le Coq Sportif (which made great apparel) and Adidas are the winners of this odd contest. :)

Lendl and branded Mizuno head-to-toe won an Aussie Open for sure.

(*irrelevant that the racquet was not originally made by Mizuno)

Noah with LCS a leader but it's possible some of the Aussies back in the 50s and thru the mid 60s won in full Dunlop gear. Need to check out some old pics.

Diadora is back actually. Lukas Lacko wears all Diadora. They even released a new yellow Guga style shoe. .I tried it on and it was good feel but not SUPER comfy. Might by a pair anyway.

The only players besides Stan who could win a major today endorsing just one company head to toe and racquet are the WIlson guys Kohlschreiber, F Lopez, etc.

Don't forget Head has been pushing their stuff.....Shoes, Kits and Sticks - no top players now in full Head gear but it's POSSIBLE ( heck even ASICS could have a winner ).

Asics doesn't have a racquet that anyone younger than 65 would probably play. Maybe they could win a major on the Courier Tour of Old Farts.

Adidas was making racquets just a few years ago but they might have stopped that operation.

Head does make shoes and attire, but never saw one pro wear Head.

Prince does also but same deal. No one that I know of wears Prince gear and shoes.

All yonex head to toe is difficult. But ivanovic won the French using yonex in 08.

What was hingis using in 97? I thought it was yonex. They almost had a calendar slam winner using yonex.

It's a catch 22. If you are that good you could get a deal for racket, and then double the money or more with a Nike or adidas deal. But no single co can offer that kind of lump sum. If stan continues to win slams he may get snatched by big contracts from companies with deep pockets. I doubt yonex can match that to keep him in yonex apparel.

This is my point exactly. Yonex probably has more money to throw at Stan than other companies can give to their top name players but even then, Yonex probably couldn't keep Nike, Adidas, and now Asics away from giving apparel deals to their top players. These shoe companies just have more money laying around for endorsements of apparel and footwear than the racquet companies. What makes Yonex special is that their golf line is expensive and VERY popular in Asia and with the boom of golf in Asia, I'm sure they have more money that they can allocate to their tennis division. Wilson is the only other major company in the tennis game that has a fairly large line of golf equipment but unfortunately, they aren't nearly the golf equipment giant they used to be before the introduction of the PING irons and the Callaway Big Bertha in the 80s.

Hingis won all her slams wearing Sergio Tacchini. In the '99 French Open final she wore Yonex, head to foot.

Ewww...bad post. She actually wore Adidas shoes. I'm calling a foot fault on you. :p
