Did you ever get bored with tennis?

Like quit or wanting to quit for a while? How did that happen?

I'm feeling bored and a little disappointed by the kind of tennis only available for me. Nobody plays singles. They play doubles but aren't good sportsmanship. Talking craps, cherry picking, always ready to put down others but fearful of stepping up to real games (better opponents, put $$$ where their mouth is, literally).

I'm thinking of taking a break!

Where it stands now, many guys just talk craps. They cherry pick dub teams, brag hard when they win, stop trying when they're losing, or giving excuses.

Do you guys ever see people who boast about their games, put down others like they're nothing, but completely shy away or find excuses when being challenged?

Ya, it’s hard to find good, consistent partners. And when they aren’t easily available, the logistical side of tennis makes it tough.

I guess that’s why most people end up joining clubs and playing league. It’s not ideal, but it’s easy.

Yeah...have you noticed he posts here constantly

Are you playing Nick Kyrgios?
:) :)

For example there's this older man, 20 years my senior. He seems to love to best me. I have beaten him a few times before so I'm not really looking to play him seriously anymore. But he keeps wanting to play me but giving him my full dubs court or other odds.

I said OK but if he's serious, put in the lunch or a couple of ball cans, but he said no, "only for fun!" It deflated me but I proceeded, and he won 6-3. Lo and behold he bragged about his win the loudest ever and to many people as he saw. It got into a "mean" territory. I didn't want to say anything else or I would appear hustling an old guy!

A few other, younger guys are similar. Talk down on me and others whenever they could, mostly behind my back. On a couple occasions I openly taunted them (just them) "I'm the best player here. Any challengers?" They didn't make a beep. :)

What kind of @ssh0l3s are you playing with? All the guys I play with are nice.
20, 30 random people who just gather every weekend morning. This court I play at is quite popular.

There's a few who are nice. I'm not talking about those. Unfortunately there's not enough nice people to offset the nasty ones. Or maybe I'm too idealistic. I gotta accept average people are gen aholes when they compete.

Good players dont do this.

Pick people from the group and start your own circle

That's nice and all, if you have the social skill to form your own circle :) Obviously I would love to. I have formed a circle of 6, 7 players but unfortunately they are very badly skilled even though they are super nice (we go out to eat, chat and everything). I still wanna go outside my circle and play better players.

But it's been more annoying than satisfying.

How in the world do people brag about their doubles skills and results when much is dependent on partnerships? If I want to win all the time, I would sit out and wait to team up with a preferred partner!!! Apparently quite a few guys do this. Sit out, smoke, chat and team up with better players (relative to opponents).

I take it as seriously as rec tennis goes. Like in this place you would think our whole world is about tennis. :)

More got frustrated and had to take a break. But was off for a half year mostly, though I still went out to hit here and there.

Alot of tennis players lack social skills. You prefer singles, find 2-3 guys and your set.

How many times do you like to play a week?

Two years ago I thought I would only stop my evening session for 2, 3 times but I haven't been back since!

I'm kinda worried that I stop my weekend a few times, it will also become permanent!

My tennis is like the gym. Gotta consistently go to keep up the interest. Make sense since I play kinda hard, like gym!!

Right now only Sat and Sunday mornings. I can easily play 5 dub sets and/or 1, 2 singles. I'm one of those who stay as long as there's a good game. Not on the clock.

Tough one. I've been trying to get back to more hiking and outdoor stuff over playing so much tennis, but I still really love tennis so I just moderate the time I play. I think that in itself helps keep my interest.

Are there any leagues you could join? League players tend to talk less smack than random players that just show up... and in league, you'd be playing against people your same level.

I'm stilling receiving notices from a league network that I played in years ago. I am thinking of going with them again. Good suggestions.

I'm not bored right now, I'm just having a lot of difficulty motivating myself. I seem to have more excuses not to play than desire to get out there and work on what I know I want to do.

There is a lot going on in my life right now (closing on a new house next week and moving, work pressure is high right now, just came off of a busy league season, etc.) and I am playing sh*tty... on top of that, it's hot... I'm in Georgia and the heat is fkn brutal - it's sapping the desire right out of me. I play in friendly matches, but I do poorly, and that makes me even less motivated to play. I know my desire will pick back up when the weather gets more reasonable and the current life challenges settle down a bit, but right now, I'd rather talk about tennis than play it. To make matters worse, I have another friendly match tonight, and I haven't picked up a racquet in a week (the only time I've not played for this long in the past 3 years was when I had pneumonia)... maybe I need to take some time off - either that, or I need to go out and hit a bucket of serves...

I happened to catch a new episode of Teen Titans today. In the last scene Robin concluded the lesson to learn: don't do anything too exciting or too boring. Live life moderately.:-D

I tend to go over the top sometimes (well , I'd like more of those instances) and occasionally also crash hard. Go big or go home is my new motto. :giggle:

Yeah i stopped for ages.
Became dispirited when it dawned on me just how bad i was despite all the effort, plus the people in the rec comps i played in were appalling humans for the most part. Cheating boasting gamesmanship backstabbing gloating etc. Growing injuries sealed the deal and the thought of even picking up a racquet was unbearable for 8 or 9 months.

Yes, every time towards the end of a hitting session. Tired, aching, bad shots. No fun a all. But rest for a day and I’m loving it again. Every time.

I love the sport but it’s tiring losing all of the time playing people that I want to play. I could play down but that comes with its own price.

But I like the fitness without the hours in the saddle or on the road. And for the most part the people. I’ve had good experiences mostly meeting people that are better human beings than me. And I’m pretty good.

Is that singles or doubles? If it's doubles, do what the people I play with do, which is team up with better players, cherrypick teams, never play singles, and excuse for, blame partners for your loss. Seriously, i"m not cynical. That's the pattern that I see at my courts.

I think that's how most people can find "motivation" to continue to come out. They give themselves some or a lot of delusion, like they're good most of the time and only bad due to the fault of others. Singles is not their interest.

Occasionally, I focus on the fitness part of the tennis as well. I stop playing games and just rally and run all the time. It feels very good but I cannot do this often because someone always jumps in and co-rally. I hate 2 vs 2 rally.

I find that being nice all the time is not good. If you consistently run into those appalling humans, find an opportunity to talk back and set them straight.

I did that last weekend. This one annoying guy who always wants to best me (I think that's what competitive people do with perceived alpha guy in a group! :)) chimed in with some rude comments while we were playing, I told him such things only applicable to him, the only person who takes Sunday games so seriously. He didn't say anything after that. :)

Wow, your situation sounds difficult. I sympathize.

There were a few times that I felt sick of tennis (mostly because of the people) I just came to the court (because it was a routine for me) and actually "allowed" myself to sit and chill for a longer time. I also don't mind hitting and horsing around with older folks who can't hit very well.

First time it felt kinda weird as if I wasn't using my time right, but whatever. I thought as long I could get outdoor and move around for health benefits, that was all that mattered. I know several guys who do not derail from their routine, ie always play with same people, same games, etc.

I literally never have become bored with playing tennis.

Which is strange, because I have become bored with many other hobbies over the years.

I think it's the exercise element. Even during stretches when I'm not particularly focused on competition or improvement, I'm still getting a good workout.

How exactly do you conduct your tennis?

Get to the court, rally and/or play sets?

I think it matters if you play sets or rally or something else. Tennis isn't magic or always a cure for boredom, depression. It can get boring. Losing can make you feel sad and quitting.

I played pretty high level junior until I was 17, left home and barely picked up a racket for 20 years. Shame really as starting back up a couple of years ago made me realise how much I loved/missed tennis. Also I now have to deal with the fact I suck compared to how I used to play and having just turned 40, getting anywhere near my old level just isn't going to happen.

Can't see me quitting again though, I'd play everyday if I could. Helps that I have a really good group of people to play with - both in terms of ability and personality.

Lol, yes absolutely I got bored with tennis. Took literally a ten year break after playing college ball. I guess with any hobby you can get burnt out especially if you’re doing it 4-6 times a week. Picked up a racquet and started hitting against a handball court wall after ten years, and picked up right where I left off. Found some decent players, and even joined usta league.

It seems like I'm getting noticeably stronger and more clear headed in games when I stopped picking up the racket everyday, practicing this or that at home or at lunch time!

Everything seems simpler, easier to do!

Maybe I was getting burnt out before.

Well it has always been a mix. I play singles and doubles, with different groups, and at different levels. I'll play competitive sets against good players, but I'll also play super casual sets with beginners. I attend occasional clinics and take lessons on and off. Also my wife plays and I'll help her practice.
