Different gauge strings for hybrid?

Does using a thinner gauge string as a cross significantly change anything as far as playability? I want to use PHT 16 in the mains and a decent multi in the crosses. Would the thicker gauge mains at a higher tension dominate the thinner cross at a lower tension? Thanks.

I'm not sure I have an answer for you that is accurate or satisfactory. I started experimenting with hybrids 2+ years back, looking for something with decent feel, pop and control that was kind to my elbow. I figured out after some experimenting, that hybrid might be the way to go.

I found that using gut in combination with a poly was pretty nice. I determined after trying it both ways that I prefered gut in the mains and poly in the crosses. At the time I used 17g for both. After playing in the summer I noticed I was sawing right through the gut mains in less than 4 hours of hitting. So I went to 15L in the gut mains and started using string savers. My prefered combo today is Tonic 15L mains (55lbs) and PHT 17g crosses (53lbs).

I'm not sure if going to 16g for the crosses would significantly change anything, but perhaps maybe lose a little spin/pop? Never tried it since I don't break the crosses.

Thanks. I suppose like everything else I should just try it and see what happens. Jrod, I will use my Quantum for the first time this weekend. Any tips? How was the Laser Supreme they sent you?

Is it your first stringing, or the first time you've strung with this machine? My son actually did his 1st stringing with Ted walking him through it on the phone. I wasn't even there for the call (out playing tennis). Ted had a lot of useful tips for a novice so I recommend you do this if it is your very 1st stringjob.

My son subsequently taught me to string and my first string job was the hybrid I spoke about. I hate to say it but I almost succeeded in impressing myself! Seriously, the Quantum is very easy to use and is incredibly intuitive.

As far as the Laser Supreme string they sent, I was impressed with it (I will likely resort to using it in my mains come summertime). After several hours I noticed it moving quite a bit which I find slightly annoying. Anyway, I finally went back to my combo after my new Becker 11 mids showed up.

Have fun and be prepared to be impressed!!!!

This will be my first stringing with this machine. I have used an old klippermate for a long time. Thanks for the feedback.
