Because he wasn't close to getting that record then. Give the guy a break. I don't even like him, but the hate boner some of you have is ridiculous.

That’s not an excuse because he was speaking about the slam record years ago even though he wasn’t close to it. The point is that he never cared about the weeks at number one but he always cared about the slam record from day one but now all of a sudden he acts like the weeks at no.1 was always one of his 2 biggest goals. He is manipulating you all open your eyes.

Laughable.

Of course he wanted it, always.

Good for him.

Nothing here to get bent up about. I’m sure even if he were coy about his goals, that wouldn’t change them.

In Tennis tradition players used to be more respectful/reserved (let your racquet do the talking) but these are different times; Nole is inspired by people like Kobe in the NBA, and a different culture now rules all sports across the world.

Tennis was called the gentleman’s sport because you fought your opponent hard, but always played fair, never stooped to crass name calling, never made excuses and accepted victory and defeat with grace. (Not saying Nole doesnt encompass some of these attributes himself)

These days the ethos is more like boxing or WWE, where whether for pumping yourself up or generating interest, talking about opponents, records or what you’re going to do is considered good.

Doesn't this go without saying ? Nadal games won on (non clay ) against Djokovic is worse than Nishikori's 2-5000 record against top 10.

Without RF, the sport wouldn't have been half as popular it is today. He will be revered more than the other 2 combined irrespective of whether he keeps
the records or not
By you.

Revered by you.

But I agree, without the birth of RF, tennis wouldn't even exist now. Rafa and Novak would be playing for 5 dollars prize money at slams.

Correct. This shouldn't come as news to anyone. Djokovic is only concerned with how he plays. Whether Nadal is there or not, he gonna try his best, no?

But that's not true. If it was only down to Djokovic he wouldn't have got thrashed in the final at RG.

we can argue the benefit or not of stating your goals so clearly. But LOL at anyone who thinks that all the other players don’t have the same goals. The difference is how close, or not, they are to them. But they all want the same things.

Why bother with Novak's statement? If he wants the Most Weeks at #1, he can have it. Rafa knows he does not have the REALISTIC chance at this stage of his career to fight for that record. Why would he care? Murray had paid the price by pushing his body to the limit just to get YE #1 last 2016. Now he is semi-retired. At 34, Rafa will focus solely on the SLAMS. If he can get the MOST MASTERS win, he will try. He can tie it anyway by winning Paris this year. Novak will have his 6th YE #1 this year. Rafa MAY fight next year to once again tie it.

In other words, Rafa can relax because he is tied with Federer with Slam record and he has the BEST chance to break the tie next year. Slams is TOP metric anyway.

Which is why the phony explanations of Djoke and Nadsy that "no they aren't thinking about this or that record" were labeled accordingly, to the dissatisfaction of their fanbases.

What does that have to do with weeks at #1 and YE#1, he only gained points by being in a RG final, and how he will play for the rest of the year.
Makes no sense what you wrote, but that is expected from you.

Haters gonna hate. Djokovic doesn't care about anything except records at this point. He doesn't care about any of our feelings. Love or hate him, he doesn't hide his true intentions.
He should care about tennis maybe instead of some stupid record which is not even GS numbers record.

Having the most weeks at #1 will just be a statistic just like this one:

Male professional tennis players have the most career singles match wins in the Open Era, which began in April 1968.

Yep, a few years back, the Federer fans were feeling safe with the 310 record claiming that is the one that will never be taken down.
Now, it is "stupid"
Next March, it will go into the H2H category as irrelevant

I thought weeks at #1 was related to tennis. Sorry but it's a huge record. He spent much of his career behind the legends Sampras, Connors, Lendl and of course Federer and has passed 3 of them with 1 left in his sights. Being the #1 top dog is a huge deal in tennis. It's not only about Slams.

Well it's not true, but if you're a pro that's how you're going to think. I know that was my mindset whenever I played tournaments, and I'm just some Bahmet-tier amateur. Focus on what you can control. Have a gameplan for whatever the draw throws at you, but don't obsess over it.

Players always pursuit the next best goal they can realistically win, so what's so shocking?

Now that the Slam season is over, YEC and No1 is the next best thing.

Personally I find it refreshing that Djokovic honestly talks about his professional goals.

It's just Novak's personality. He knows that the record for Most weeks at #1 is more reachable than the Slam record and he will go for it. Likewise Rafa knows he has NO chance for that record therefore he will focus more on winning Slams. IT is also Novak's goal. But with a deficit of 3, he has a long way to go. It is going to be exciting season next year. Both of them will SNATCH Fed's record. Rafa to have the most slams and Novak with Most weeks and YE #1.

Is Djokovic sincere?

Winning grand slams is no longer my priority, says Djokovic

BELGRADE (Reuters) - Novak Djokovic no longer sees winning grand slam titles or staying top of the men’s ATP rankings as a priority in his tennis career, Serbia’s world number one said on Friday.

“I don’t want to think about winning titles and being the number one any more in order to avoid putting pressure on myself,” Djokovic, the winner of 12 major tournaments, told reporters.

“I put too much pressure on myself after winning this year’s Roland Garros and I didn’t like it,” the 29-year-old added.

“I always enjoyed tennis and relished the game away from tournaments too but in the last few months, all the talk about making history has brought too much pressure.

“It doesn’t mean I no longer want to contribute to the sport but I also don’t want to keep on playing just for the sake of winning titles.”

Djokovic, who steamrolled to Australian and French Open titles in the first half of the season, has suffered a dramatic loss of form since and pulled out of next week’s China Open with an elbow injury.

He lost to American Sam Querrey in the Wimbledon third round before he was knocked out in the opening round of the Olympic Games by Argentine Juan Martin del Potro.

Djokovic was unstoppable in 2015 when we won three out of four major titles and this year he finally completed a career slam after clinching his maiden French Open title by beating Briton Andy Murray in the final.

He pointed out several times after his Wimbledon and Olympic disappointments that the effort had drained him mentally and physically, raising question marks over his ability to equal Swiss maestro Roger Federer’s career tally of 17 grand slams.

He's a big mess in his head. Or he has physical issues and is trying to cope with not becoming the GOAT. One of the two.

It takes guts to display his ambitions so casually. Now there’s a difference between displaying ambitions and showing stupidity like Sinner. Djokovic can afford to say this kind of thing in his position.

This was when Djokovic was going through his slump and Pepe phase. That was 4 years ago.

So?

Because he wasn't winning he tried to pass it off as not being interested.

So a lot changes in 4 years and Novak wasn't really himself during that time.

He was also carrying a chronic injury, was burned out and just won 4 Slams in a row. When you accomplish that, you are allowed some down time.

I'm not Federer fan. I like his game the most from BIG3 but I'm not that interested in ATP to care.
I'm just saying that this record is a bit irrelevant because it says nothing - Jankovic and Safina were No. 1 and what? They didn't win Slams so this doesn't help much.

I just mean that Djokovic hurts himself saying such things. He only puts pressure on himself which hurts his game much which was visible in US Open. I think it will be easier for him stay quiet and focus on the game purely because the nerves are not his strongest part. I believe all his team said about Nadal having no chance at RG also influenced him badly. He should break the records if he can but for now he is only talking and not helping himself achieve it.

That is OK, no one anticipated unprecedented lack of younger ATGs, so some maybe thought that it is, although I don't think that that was the case. I remember that it was a big deal when Federer returned to the #1 position extending his lead in that category after Wimbledon 2012, clearly many people thought that his advantage was not nearly as big as the statement "will never be taken down" suggests. Same thing in 2018, and I also distinctly remember people being critical of him not being able to hold on to it after his loss to Thiem. All in all a history of people at least anticipating problems for him holding on to it.

He should take the RAFA approach and pretend to not care about it. Puts less pressure on himself

Wouldn't work for him. Would end up feeling demoralised and might start focusing on meditation and other stuff. It works for Rafa because he's actually trying to convince himself to be happy with everything he's already accomplished.

“My immediate task is to collect as many points as possible to try to put as much distance between me and the hunting pack before next season.”

Having made no secret of his ambitions, Djokovic showed also admits he is feeling confident of achieving them.

“Of course I’m aware of the amount of weeks, and I don’t know exactly the date, but I know it’s going to be in probably the first or beginning of the second quarter of next year if I eventually maintain my number one ranking,” he said.

“I’m getting closer. I’m in a very good position, I feel like I have been also playing really well and been healthy, which is great.

“Yes, those are the two biggest professional goals that I have at the moment.

“So the historic number one ranking goal is something that is on the horizon, and I’m going to give my all and very best that I can possibly give in the next period to achieve that.

“But also, after that slams will be the big one, of course.”

The earliest Djokovic can surpass Roger Federer for total weeks at world number one is March 8, assuming he holds onto his ranking until then.
Seems Djokovic has all but conceded the slam race. Note he says after he gets no.1 record he will focus on slams. Surely focussing on slams would mean ranking comes anyway?
