By securing the #1 ranking through the end of 2020, Djokovic guaranteed that he'll be on 302 weeks as #1 on 4 January 2021, the first week of the new season. [The ATP Cup starts on 1 January, but the points accrued there won't be a factor in the rankings until the week of 11 January, as it ends on 10 January].
Djokovic is mathematically guaranteed the #1 ranking for at least three more weeks: those of 11 January, 18 January, and 25 January. He can't be deposed until after the Australian Open at the earliest. This puts him at 305 weeks at #1 at a minimum, so five weeks behind Federer.
Despite losing in the semis, Djokovic actually gains this week on his two challengers, Nadal and Thiem, unless Thiem wins today. Djokovic got 200 points last year and 400 points this year, so he increases his tally by 200. Nadal got 400 points both years, so there's no change for him. Thiem got 800 points last year and is on 800 points this year, but he could gain 500 points today.
Has anyone done the math on what has to happen in Australia for Djokovic to lose the #1 ranking on 1 February?
If Djokovic is still #1 on 1 February, and so on 306 weeks at #1, he becomes a near lock to overtake Federer, as there aren't that many points in play in February, and Djokovic would equal Federer on 310 weeks on 1 March and overtake him on 8 March. Indian Wells only starts on 11 March.
