Does Dominic Thiem uses retail Pure strike?

I saw this pics from Unstrungcustoms who’s an awesome dude used to customize for tons of pros. Today’s he’s posting the frame for Dominic Thiem and the first thing caught my eyes is that the rackets come in like retail versions. Everything looks like identical to the retail version, even with the plastic wrap on the grip...is that’s mean Thiem is actually using the retail pure strike 3rd gen?

Nice pictures. I was under the impression that Babolat has always maintained they do not have prostocks for their pros (how much of that is true, I don't know).

Btw, is it the pictures angle or has he changed his lead placement a bit?

I don’t see there’s any lead placement change after he switched to the 3rd gen pure strike...Babolat posted how to customize his frame in Instagram before. Comparing to his first gen pure strike, yes he modified the lead length. But that’s probably because the 3rd gen just comes with a higher swingweight.

I think he just uses the retail sticks but customizes them with lead tape. He also posted a video of him getting his racquet tuned. Don't know if that does anything though.

It was a story on Babolat Instagram account so I can’t find it anymore...I remember it was before one of the major tournament final and Babolat posted that story “how to prepare Dominic’s racket” something like that

But in short, he does use retail versions customised as he wants them; plus he has a customise gripsize and maybe shape too.

I have 1 of his frames from Wimbledon 2018, and before I framed it I had a quick hit and it felt the same as my own 1st gen strikes.

His size is one thing, but he has huge hands, even for his stature. They look like he should use 5 1/4 instead

Approximately, although balance will change by about 10mm

The specs on his 1st gen Strike that are on the frame I have are 315g/317mm/305.

As Skippy alludes to, those are not Thiem's rackets being customised in the Insta posts. The post is somewhat misleading. Babolat does the customisation for its leading players in-house.

Since, yes he does use V3 Strikes, it won't take much to take the retail version and customise it to match Thiem's specs as published by Babolat.

To be very clear, they are not Thiem's rackets. Thiem's customisation is done by Babolat. Having seen his frames and speaking with Babolat, he has moved to the v3, customised to his specs as Skippy has confirmed. Occasionally players do switch to new sticks rather than stick with old ones painted haha.

Also - Neither does he customise for Djokovic - please don't be mislead. Djoko's rackets are initially customised by Head and then the 'primary care' of his rackets after that is handled by Priority One (P1).

As Skippy has said, he is friends with Novak, through Novak's younger brother, and occasionally provides stringing services when Novak trains in Spain.

I thought the Gen 2 Project17 had too harsh a feel for my elbow when I tried it while the Gen3 feels more dampened and comfortable.

Good question. If they had made a 18x20 Gen3 PST, I would have bought it instead of the 16x19 PST. But they released only a standard 18x20 which I found to be unstable and since I am not the type to customize racquets, I bought the 16x19 PST.

It took me about 10-12 hours to make the adjustment to the more open pattern when I switched from Gen 1 to Gen 3 with slices and serves taking the longest - there was almost no adjustment needed for volleys and only a few hours to change my groundstroke swing to adjust to the higher launch angle. Flat serves took the longest as I had to change my contact point. For me, it was worth it as the extra comfort allows me to play with polys and poly/gut hybrids whereas I was forced to play with full-bed gut with the Gen 1 PST as the Gen1 stiffness was at the edge of what my elbow would tolerate. Playing with poly/gut hybrids with the Gen3 allows me to swing out more freely and I have more pace/spin as a result. I also have more easy spin on my serves and the only downside is that I had to learn to swing faster to hit flat serves with as much pace as I used to with gut in my previous racquet. So, overall I feel that I’m a better player with the Gen3.

I had heard he was using red and black pure strike, but didn’t switch when 2nd gen came out, but then did switch when 3rd gen came out.

My brief hit with my friend’s gen2 18x20 felt good. He added some silicone in the handle and lead in the head so I am not sure of its specs. I have not tried serves or volleys with it yet. Full poly strings.

Compared to my RF97 the pure strike felt like it had more power, but maybe that was because it was lighter and easier to swing for me.
