Yeah I will root for Don too! Jonny Mac knew he was something special ever since he was 14. He always knows what he is talking anout just like when he says Nadal is the best volleyer. Jonny Mac is the man!

you, on the other hand, are so much more informed about the arcane world of professional tennis...

Mcenroe does say some stupid stuff, especially these days. However, you have to give the guy credit for some of his impressive predications. Mcenroe started the comparisons with Sampras right after Federer won his first slam. Looking back, it was pretty impressive.

Also, Mcenroe said earlier this year that the top 4 should not underestimate Isner. Within the next month, Isner beat Federer and Djokovic. I bet his ego swelled up after that. :)

those are a string of rough 1st round matches

Yes and no. I mean, he should've beaten Russell today, he won the first set 6-1. And Jamie Baker, ranked outside the world's top 200. DY was inside the top 50 for most of this streak, he should've had three or four wins here at least.

still from the looks of it he hasnt exactly been lucky drawing his first round matches the way he did.

putting it all aside tho ever since he won a few rounds at the USO hes been spectacularly off-color. i mean i dont follow him but whenever ive seen something from him since hes been ludicrously bad. its obviously a mental thing and he doesnt seem to be any close to overcoming it atm

It's some mental, but the biggest problem he has is that he gets too egotistical.

Cruises in one set, whether it's the first or second. Just attacks with a fervor. He wins it, gets pumped up, and then inexplicably goes into "oh please don't lose" push mode and...loses. Loses badly too. The rare times he doesn't do that, he misses a big point, double faults a break point, and completely falls apart.

Plus his weak assed second serves, and his short balls, shows that he doesn't spend time on the court.

Someone is gonna have to explain to me how Rosol is out of the top 100 and this joker is #57.

Rosol hasn't had the greatest of years, despite the once in a lifetime win at Wimby. He's lost some points, and since hitting 65, it's been downhill.

DY's is simply his summer run when he was playing out of this world with an actual coach and structure, not ridiculous parents, a lazy work ethic, and 16 year old hitting partners.

Oh I remember, funny thing is at the time Courier said there will never be another Sampras but as years went by and Fed started dominating Jim become one of the former pros who praised Fed the most.

One of the other pros who praised Fed so much relatively early (although Fed was already a 2 time slam winner and #1 by then) was Goran, here's the interview if you're interested:

http://www.asapsports.com/show_interview.php?id=18233

Q. The single toughest player that you faced over your career and the toughest stroke that you've had to deal with?

GORAN IVANISEVIC: Maybe toughest player I ever play is Pete, you know, because is guy that gives you only one, two chances per match, and if you don't take those chances, you finish. Usually with all these guys, I play lot of matches, but usually you get more chances. With him, two, three if he's generous, you know. I think with him it was the toughest for me to play. You know, he beat me twice here in Wimbledon. But also Andre is a guy that was very tough to play. Becker, another guy. His serve was unbelievable. But I still think that Federer is the biggest talent from all the players I ever play in my career. I don't know if he's going to win so many Grand Slams like Pete, but definitely he's the most talented player I ever play.

Q. Does he have a greater range of talents than Pete? How would you explain?

GORAN IVANISEVIC: Some things he does better than Pete. I mean, on the court he's like magician. Pete was destroying. Pete was serving. Nobody talked ever about Pete's serve. They were only talking about my serve. But when you play Pete, you couldn't touch his serve, you know. Even when you returned, then he hits forehand winner and the point is finish. But Federer, the way he plays, he's back, he comes in. When you look him, you think tennis is very easy sport, but it's not.

Hopefully on his decent down the rankings the USTA doesn't waste any more wildcards on him.

This is for continuously losing in the first round. He has made $175K so far this year. Not bad money for only winning 2 first round matches.

That's actually quite incredible to see. And they say tennis players outside the top 20 are underpaid!
I guess once he starts being unable to qualify for main draws his earning potential will drop off. Surely he won't be getting more wildcards.

thats quite misleading tho. if you dont get all those wildcards thrown at you and have to stay alive playing qualies and challengers those numbers will quickly look very different

don’t forget that because he's American and was a promising junior, he received some pretty lucrative endorsement deals that most players in the top 100 could only dream of

Donald could win, IF he comes back to Atlanta full time and plays USTA 4.5 and ALTA.

why do you hate DY so much?? i don't get it. you are in every thread about him saying how he sucks. i noticed you went quiet though when he had his run at the end of last year.

yes his streak this year is pretty pathetic and not worthy of a top 50 ranking. however his ranking is about to free fall in the next few months

You just contradicted yourself, but I think you're wrong anyway.

He's not egotistical at all. How can you be when you're mired in a double digit losing streak??

I think he's lacking confidence, because of the streak, and, at the 1st hint of any adversity, getting broken for instance, he's starts thinking here we go again, and it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

His 2nd serve has never been huge, so I wouldnt attribute that to his not spending time on court.

Donal Young clearly doesn't have any game nor will to make it.

How can this guy represent our country in the Olympic games?

I'm embarrassed.

BTW I'm hoping Switzerland or Argentina wins the gold medal.

^^ Young made the Olympic team based on players not able or unwilling to represent the USA & his ranking at the time the team was selection.

You feel good about Young getting passed over for Davis Cup this season for Harrison in spite of his ranking?

Have you seen how he plays? First set, he has a variety of shots, goes to the net, and attacks like crazy(like the first round against Youzhny). Then once he wins that set, he stops the variety and inexplicably quits doing what makes him successful.

Too bad for Don...would have loved to see him possibly crack the top 20-30 this year, but without a coach, I don't think that's possible.

Most people don't realize how the ATP Pension Plan works, so here is a little inside info.

A player must play in 10 ATP main tour events in a calendar year to get a qualifying year. The Grand Slams don't count because they are ITF. You have to have 5 qualifying years in order to secure your pension. Part of their pension is also that they receive medical benefits. Challenger and Futures events do not count

Yes, all those wildcards that he received into main tour events count as events played. The other thing that people don't realize is that you get ATP points and money for losing, even in the qualifier, for most ATP events.

He played 10 ATP events in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and so far he is on track to play to 10 this year. Most of those early ATP tournaments he received wildcards into. Basically the USTA has given him his ATP retirement.

I don't dislike the young man, I just think he should have EARNED his ATP pension rather than have it given to him. I doubt if anybody in the history of the game has been given as many wildcards as he has.

Now they are on to their next wildcard experiment, Jack Sock with 5 ATP wildcards this year. Five more to go this year and he will be 20% on his way to his pension.

In the meantime, Ryan Harrison, (who earned his way through the tour) is continuing to climb up the rankings.

Noone should underastimate Isner - that has been known for years already.

Can he keep this streak going long enough to break Spadea's world record losing run of 21 losses in a row?

Good luck Don, I'll be rooting for you.

If I were him I would go into a Challenger to get my confidence back and not break Spadeas record, lol.

Seems nuts to give DY a pension.

I bet Spadea would come out of retirement just to lose to him!

Spadea IS considering coming out of retirement...to coach Young! It's a win/win situation...Suck at coaching and the record is surpassed; succeed and he might be a magician of a coach!

Not if you're a good player. I'm not saying he should win them all, but some of those are very winnable. If you're on the right path as a pro tennis player. But he's not, is he, let's be honest.
