Anyone here take a shot of apple cider vinegar and another shot of virgin olive oil every morning? How does it work out for you? I am really interested to know 'cause both my son and I will be doing it starting on this coming Monday. TIA

Why virgin olive oil?? Seems like regular olive oil would have more of the antioxidants found in the skin of the olive than the more gently pressed virgin or extra virgin.

ACV every night. Good for the gut, reducing inflammation, and alkalizing the system to increase recovery times. Straight olive oil though, no way. I get enough on my salads.

I;ve read about this for liver cleansing (on some alternative-like sites). Also, may help in removing gall-bladder stones, acco to some sites.

No apple cider vinegar for me. Just a week into it, I developed acid reflux.

If I feel the need for vinegar and oil, it would go on a salad of greens, beets and tomatoes. Good thing I am omnivorous. OTW, the answer for a daily dose of this stuff is NO!

Yup, repeated trial, same result.

Your experience may be different.

Actually, I don't really have much experience there. Don't get acid reflux very often. ACV has never caused it for me. I just find it odd, interesting and ironic, the ACV has this effect on you whereas several studies/sources and many ppl see the opposite effect -- ACV is often used to treat heartburn/acid reflux rather than cause it.

I'm wondering if you are drinking full-strength, undiluted ACV rather than diluting it. Undiluted ACV has been know to irritate the throat/esophagus (and maybe more). Are you experiencing this irritation than actual acid reflux?

There may be some downsides to ACV. It can damage teeth and irritate your throat/esophagus. Best to dilute ACV with water (or tea). Drink it with a straw for less damage to the teeth. Drinking a lot of apple cider vinegar may also cause potassium levels to drop too low. Your muscles and nerves need that nutrient to function properly.

A study of people with type 1 diabetes found that apple cider vinegar slows the rate food and liquids leave the stomach to be digested. That makes it harder to control blood sugar levels. It might also affect medications that treat diabetes and heart disease, as well as diuretics (medicines that help your body get rid of water and salt) and laxatives.

How about these for some variety? Would be tempted to add some lecithin granules (or take with lecithin capsules) and a bit of black pepper (for piperine) for improved bioavailability of the turmeric. Might be best to replace most of the cayenne pepper with black pepper in the 2nd link below.

If you don't have lecithin readily available, olive oil may help to improve the bioavailability of turmeric a bit.

Careful with the vinegar shots..

While it may have some health benefits systemically, I've come across a growing trend with patients in my practice doing this on a daily basis and suffering very high rates of tooth decay. Some of the worst cases of rampant caries that have walked into my office have been of course from chronic mountain dew/soda/energy drinkers, but also patients that are consuming ACV shots and lemon juice type shots in the morning every day. Think of your teeth as a matrix of minerals. Acids ultimately will erode the mineral matrix of your teeth and leave them highly susceptible to decay. This stuff just softens the teeth if there's a chronic exposure to it. It doesn't happen overnight....most of these people have been doing this for a solid year or two. Then they show up for examination and that is when we discover how much damage has been done.

If you are going to consume it, be careful about the way you do it. Try to get it down quickly without too much exposure to your teeth, rinse with water and spit to rid your mouth of any residual acid which is damn near impossible. Some will continue to regurgitate this through reflux and silent esophageal regurgitation. If you choose to do it on the scale of years, you will want to seek medical/dental examination regularly, and do it at your own risk.

How about using a straw as I suggested above?

ACV caplets seem to work better for me, no burning sensation in the throat and doesn't bathe your teeth in an acid environment causing enamel erosion. Even if the ACV was diluted it just wasn't very comfortable going down but I get the benefits of ACV in caplet form and seems to help with weight control.

Was not aware that ACV caplets existed. Is there a capsule form as well?

Sorry, meant to say capsules. there are pills too tthat contain other ingredients such as cayenne pepper that aid in metabolism. Very convenient, some of the benefits of apple cider vinegar that are backed by science include:
  • Weight loss: Drinking diluted vinegar may aid weight loss and decrease body fat
  • Blood sugar control: Vinegar has been shown to decrease blood sugar levels
  • Reduction in cholesterol: Consuming vinegar may reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels

I would have used ACV with "the mother". The real one.

For example this one.
I dont like to take it as a shot, I use it on salads.

At home I also have the 30% ACV(or is it 40?), I use it for cleaning. I also use it in the garden in a spray to remove plants I dont want there. Environmental friendly! Love ACV.

Thanks for the info. Was just diagosed with a possible peripheral neuropathy (numbness and burning in the toes). Pre-diabetic condition (due, in large part, to lack of exercise cuz of current disability). Was prescibed an expensive medical food (supplement) = MetaNX = B vitamins, fatty acids, some minerals...

A number of sources indicate that ACV, Cayenne, and chamomile tea can also help with this condition. Will have to look into ACV with cayenne in capsule form

Olive oil and avacado oil are high oleic oils = heart-healthy omega-9 fats. You can also find some high-oleic versions of sunflower oil and safflower oil (such as Saffola). Omega-3 oils are also beneficial to keep inflammation in check.

The oils found in many processed foods are omega-6 fats or partially hydrogenated oils. Partial hydrogenation will result in unhealthy trans fats. Too much omega-6 fats in the diet will promote inflammation. The average North American diet is believed to contain a very unbalanced and unhealthy ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids. Given that, best to minimize omega-6 sources and increase omega-3 sources.

Yes, that's correct. And that's exactly why no one needs to heap spoon fulls of olive oil on top of all the other oils they're already consuming.

Cut out all the bad oils as a first step. Using olive oil in cooking or on your salads is all you need. You don't need drink it -- that's just nonsense.

Good idea to limit intake of trans fats (from partially hydrogenated soybean oil and other sources). Should also reduce intake of omega-6 fatty acids IFF one is getting too much of it (as many North Americans are).

There is strong evidence that taking Extra olive oil has some distinct health benefits. Refer to link above. (Eating a lot of avocado and olives might help as well). Those who eat higher amounts of olive oil -- about 15-20 grams/day --appear to have a lower risk of developing diabetes. This equates to three to four teaspoons per day.

Heart disease. Some research shows a high dietary intake of olive oil -- 54 grams/day; about 4 tablespoons -- can reduced the risk of first heart attack by 82% when compared with a low intake of 7 grams of olive oil or less per day.

Other good evidence that extra OO can reduce the risk of breast cancer and high blood pressure. Can also soften stools for those who have constipation. Could also have some benefit for high cholesterol levels.

Same here. Actually, I knew better. I've battled GERD my entire life and all of the doctors I've seen have told me to limit my intake of acidic foods and drinks.

It is my understanding that some/many people with "heartburn" (acid reflux) appear to benefit from taking ACV. While many others do not. It apparently has much to do with the underlying cause of the "heartburn". Some ppl get that "acid reflux feeling" from too little stomach acid (hypochlorhydria) rather than too much. It is for these ppl that ACV might provide some relief.
