federer built or not?

hi everyone this is my first post!

im a very big federer fan but have always ALWAYS been curious about this question if anyone could answer it for me.

is federer built in terms of muscle? looking at his core, chest and shoulders he seems so, well he must be to wield such a heavy racket and thump balls at insane speeds. BUT his arms seem really skinny, this may just be an illusion because he is quite tall, can anyone shed light on this?

the reason i ask is that i want to achieve a perfect build for tennis in the gym and i thought federer is a good place to start!

thanks

i think someone have told me before that power from tennis could come from ways.. timing (through the right technique, using ur right muscle at the right time and coordination), flexibility and raw power.. well as for federer i think he uses both timing and flexibility therefore he achieved that power.. safin is more to raw power and timing i think.. he's a big boy and that.. hence he can generate insane power.. so yeh.. u can go to the gym do weights to improve ur raw power but don't lose too much flexibility coz it gives u power too

First off, there are 3 body types - endomorph, mesmomorph, and ectomorph (some people are tweeners) - you're stuck with what you got genetically. So for you to model yourself after someone, just because he's #1, is probably not a good idea.

In general, weight training with higher reps and lower weights, is good for every tennis player. But flexibility and endurance are just as, if not more, important.

I have a friend who is a skinny guy. But he has a livewire arm. I am bigger and more muscular than he is but the guy can throw a football much farther than I can.

Look at some quarterbacks in college. They look skinny but they got arm.

So this just means that you don't have to be arnold to have a strong arm to produce the racket head speed.

I'm sure all this also has something to do with the core muscles of the body as well (the abs and lower back).

I'm sure Federer is capable of building many things, but with all the money he's earned, he'd pay someone to build houses and luxuries for him so the answer to your question is no, it's probably not Federer built.

Whatever he is, it works.

And you can't change your basic build. All you can do is become fit, toned, and flexible.

Rickson asked something to the effect.....What exactly has Federer built?

A legacy. A champion's reputation.

More to come.
In that case, Federer has definitely built something huge!

You may not want to let your friends know about your Roger fantasies.

According to Cliff Drysdale, when you stand close to Federer you see that he has very broad shoulders. He's not what I would call built, but he's got a big forearm. You don't have to be built to be very strong.

I believe Federer, along with many other top ATP pros, exemplifies the "modern" tennis player in terms of build.

Cliff Drysdale must be correct. Federer probably has very broad (and strong) shoulders. Not only that, his chest is well defined. He has huge calves and thighs.

Too many casual observers still have the John McEnroe 1980s look as their stereotype of a tennis player. McEnroe had huge legs but a very small upper body. The players today have even bigger legs and very big upper bodies (see: Agassi).

Man. that picture Fed's forearm makes me glad that I've got a 2 hander so it can even out the arms a little. I saw that match of Justine Henin-Hardenne against Hingis & i noticed something to that effect on her but not as dramatic. Do you guys think that having a dominant hand forearm built up like that from a one hander helps these all courters do so well at the net with the volleys? Seems like alot of the champs with one-handed backhands were not too shabby at the net - McEnroe, Becker, Edberg, Sampras, Federer.

...

It's getting bigger than me and the sad part is that I am serious.

Absolutely!

Navratilova is another example.

There are definitely huge advantages of the one-handed backhand, but Agassi didn't do too shabbily without it. He also has good touch and I can't recall the last time I've seen him miss a volley, maybe because I rarely see him volley.

I've always noticed Federer's big hairy forearm. He may not have Nadal's muscles, but I would venture to say that he's stronger than Nadal.

federers 'secret'

he is strong in an explosive way.. due to great technique, flexibility and specific tennis strenght .. i.e he is built slender but per pound of body weight very strong and useful weight / muscle.. also he knows how to use the pace and spin of incomiong shots to get max results form them ..
and he does have broad shoulders a la bjorn borg ,not from muscle but normally means big lungs = great cardio ..
