Federer doesn't slide on hard court?

Whenever Tomic hit a wide, low-bouncing shot, I noticed that Federer wouldn't slide after it. This makes him a half-step slower because he wants a small enough amount of momentum to not injure himself when he plants his foot. It also makes him lose another half-step for the next shot because he gets slightly off-balance from wobbling on his planted foot after he hits that slice.

Or maybe I wasn't seeing it right????

He does slide, but not nearly as much as Nadal or Nole on HCs.

Federer has better footwork than either...

Do you not hear the squeaks Fed makes at times? Even though he's recently called by the Eurosport comms as 'silent assassin'.

Are you ok? Did you say something nice about Federer by mistake? I though Federer only won all those slams because of 17 fourteen day long weak areas.

I've said many times that Federer has the best footwork of the Big 4; because its the truth.

Just like its true that Federer benefitted from a relatively weak and transitional 2004-2007, in terms of competition.

Its called honesty; try it sometime...

He gives in to the truth every now and then to try and make himself seem like a reasonable poster. No one buys it.

Why would he slide to the extent that Nole slides on hard courts? Are you silly in the head? Wait until Nole is Roger's age... see how well he can still stand and move.

There's a reason why Fed's been health all this time and knows when and when not to push his body.

i noticed that too during a point in the first set. it seemed like he conciously broke his momentum and stopped himself from sliding. possibly because he didnt want to risk tweaking his ankle in the 3rd round,or possibly because the point wasn't worth winning anymore. smart all things considered.

He slides, just doesn't really need to. I think he has better judgement than nole and rafa because he doesn't go after those shots which you will only be able to get to once out of 10 tries.

He definitely slides. I have the match on PVR, he slided quite a few times. The guy is 31 after all, he isn't has flexible as he use to be. Wait till Djoker gets into his 30s and loses some of that agility.

He doesn't slide into the shots on hardcourts the way people (i.e. I) do on clay. This is him making nearly unreachable shots in a rally last night:

Notice that he doesn't stress his joints by sliding into the shot, only barely makes a squeaking noise when changing direction and accelerating to get into position for the next shot. The only slide is the squash/slice forehand shot and even then it's more dragging the hind leg for balance as he is so low and outstretched rather than sliding into the shot to decelerate. It's kinda beautiful.

i really think his positioning, footwork, balance and efficient movement are worth in-depth study. He covers so much of the court, so quickly and at all times without seeming to destroy his joints. Instead of all of the never ending threads on forehands.

holy crap that was sick. i think even assuming the return goes back safe, most of us would have lost the point at the first wide ball hit by Tomic.

Guy doesn't know what transitional is :-D

I would call any time before 2 of the Big 3 came into their primes to be transitional!

But of course you're too dense to realize that.
A transitional period means a period that transitions from one dominant figure to the next.

Once it transitioned from Sampras to Federer, the transition was over.
