Another slam because his record will be even more out of reach in that case and it would grant him no.1 most definitely, since I doubt Novak or Murray will go into another unbeaten run post USO.

No.1 or YE No.1?? It's not the same, right?

A Slam easily beats a No.1 achieved at some random point and then dropped before year-end. But a YE No.1 would be huge and maybe even more historically important than 'just' another Slam, IMO.

So let's just have both, shall we?

A slam beats a YE#1 too, IMO. Grand slam easily, for me. Not that I wouldn't celebrate like I just won the lottery if he got back to #1, but the answer for me is a GS every time.

As a true Federer fan and not just a greedy troll that doesn't know how to appreciate, I'm still just extremely glad and proud that he was able to win the AO the way he did. That was a dream coming true for me, and I don't need anything more from him. I never stop to find it disappointing to see how quickly people forget. That victory may have been the most legendary victory of his career, and yet here we are, less than three months later wanting MORE MORE MORE. Please stop and just appreciate that we're lucky enough to watch him play.

I think the expectation is that not one player sweeps the end of the season like Murray did, so 1 more slam for Fed should be enough (presuming he wins the usual Basel, Cincy etc or goes deep).

Fedr will win Calendar slam then take the rest of the year off until Basel and then skip Bercy to win in Milan and then play WTF. The question is if he plays Cinncy.

... and yet here we are, less than three months later wanting MORE MORE MORE.

And that's how 99% of fans are. I would not be happy if Federer never won another tournament, so of course I want "more, more, more" and there's nothing wrong with that. I'm supposed to sit back, watch Wimbledon in a couple months and not care if he loses third round because it's greedy to want "more, more, more?" Let the ride continue!

Grand Slam.
Not because I value the #1 less, but because if Fed does not win another GS Anand is still #1 at the end of the year, it would be because of wildly inconsistent play from others and a bunch of injuries, rather than Fed playing well.

I'd much rather enjoy some great Federer tennis even if it is limited to a single slam tournament.

When you have a dry spell for 5 years, one memorable moment is not enough to make up for it.

#1 really doesn't matter. Adding to the GS count is what matters. He could hit 20 after the USO is done. It's crazy to think it's possible.

Another Grand Slam. Not just because it adds more to the legacy, but because even if Federer wins another Slam, #1 is not a realistic target (I am not even sure if another Slam is, but #1 is much tougher). You don't have to go back too much into the past, last year is a great example of 2 Slams not being enough. Djokovic had an identical start with the HC sweep, then an amazing clay season (we can rule that out for Federer as he isn't great on the surface anymore and won't even show up for most events) and in an average 2nd half still registered a Slam final, WTF final, Masters win plus SF+QF appearances. Obviously Murray won't be going far this year at every tournament like he did in 2016 so 11-12k points won't be required for #1, but still the expectations are way too high. Yes Federer had an incredible start to 2017, but he isn't some upcoming youngster whose future we'll predict all day long. The guy has certain limits now, I'd rather enjoy what he has done so far than "demand" even more.

1-2 more GL, #1 is just a bonus.
He doesnt need (and is not able) to pay the price that Murray is paying now after crazily chasing the top spot.

I have a hard time seeing another Grand Slam title without the no. 1 ranking coming along pretty much automatically.

Really the only way it could happen would be a Wimbledon W, followed by an immediate year ending injury.

There's absolutely nothing in Fed's game or history to suggest a dropoff in performance precipitous enough to deny him the #1 as long as he's showing up for summer and fall events. Contrast with Djokovic last year, about whom many, many people suggested that he'd grind his way to a cliff somewhere around his current age. And if it was going to happen to Novak, the Wimbledon-and-beyond stretch is exactly when you would have wagered on it coming. For Fed? That'd be the last place a non-injury cliff would come.

Exactly. He should be refreshed after a light clay schedule, ready to attack his favourite half of the season. Can't wait to see how Ljubicicerer plays at cincy, USO etc.

That's because Djoke was hurt or out of it for half the year. Djokovic's last year was an outlier.
Djoko still won Montreal and made a RU at US and WTF. Considering how few tournaments Fed plans to play, it's def. a possibility to win one more slam and not be no. 1. But considering there's likely no one having a season like the one Murray/Djoko just had, that's a somewhat remote possibility.
With all the points he's gained already it'll be almost impossible not to become NO1 if he's winning another slam.
Not quite, but it is unlikely. See above. Djoko did the exact same just last year, remember?

Federer already has the most weeks at #1 so it is not as important. Slam count is what matters now.

I have to be honest and straight. I want to see him get both. However, winning a slam will virtually make him no.1, providing he stays healthy and plays his normal tennis throughout the year. He's already won all the big ones so far this year, and winning another slam will give him a huge advantage on the ranking points total. If he gets his usual results, ie, SFs, Fs or Ws, from other events, he will have more than enough points to get YE#1. I honestly believe he has a very good chance to get YE#1, providing he stays healthy. Good scheduling will be very important for him at this stage of his career, and if he gets YE#1, that will be such a huge achievement. Anyway, I would just like to see him winning a slam which will take care of the rest.

I'd take a 6th YE#1 over a Slam, but winning a 2nd Slam this year almost assures the YE#1 coupling with 1-2 more M1000s and 1-2 small titles. YE#1 looks easier this year since a long time.

Federer himself wants to win more and get back to no1 (he said it multiple times). We are supporting him to do that. If he feels it's enough, I would accept with happiness. But it's clear that he doesn't want to stop.

And his goal is always Wimbledon trophy. AO2017 championship didn't change that. He waits untill April to see how his body reacts with taxing schedules in tours. It's obvious that he wants to play more and win more, why shouldn't we desire for the same?

I guess you can never have too many Slams and the more he wins the more likely the #1 ranking will trail in their wake.

That's how Fed views it (from what he's been saying).
