Federer fans, what would you rather have: Federer win a Grand Slam in 2018 and then retire at end of year? or he plays for3 more years and never wins another Grand Slam?

Win a GS (US ideally) and retire in 2018 - I need to move on to the next phase now.

After 2017 I’m ready to settle on a new favourite - Dimitrov, Shap, Goffin - slim pickings to be sure, may require a few seasons of postFed hangover to stumble through - but it won't happen until both Fed and I conclude our respective journeys.

The damn trouble is that greaseball Nadal. He never seems to want to let up. My whole career as a Fed fan he's been chasing after me ceaselessly, and relentlessly.

Someone. Anyone. Put Nadal out to pasture please.

Post Script
You can always spot Fedheads from the way they begin talking about Fed and somehow always manage to land up at Nadal. Same pattern holds true for the Gonads camp.

Tough one but I'll go for 2018 RG def Rafa in final and retire end of the year.

Even the Maestro might find it difficult to win a tournament in which he doesn't play.

In answer to the question -definitely one more slam. If it wasn't no 20 might be different but...you know....20.....

Forget slams.

Me when Fed goes up 0-0 15-0 at Dubai 1R:

I'll take the three years thanks. He'll likely win at least one slam in that time anyway.

This, basically. Who cares about the records? They're nice for trolling or shutting up the trolls on TTW, but that's about it. Whether he ends up with the most slams or not won't change the way I feel, so I really couldn't care less about that.

But yeah, 20 anyway, because, you know... 20. It's so much more Sexi than 19. ;)

Watching Fed for 3 more years triumphs that !
Exactly. Nad picking off a couple more at RG doesn't tell us anything new. He's been the clay GOAT for years and he's welcome to it. I don't resent him, he's my second favourite currently active player.

But Roger's own position in history has been clear since 2005/2006 and was confirmed in 2009, 2012, and this year. The final count doesn't bother me any more than it bothers Laver fans.

The longer we get to keep seeing Roger play, the better.

Though I am not someone who cheers for him regularly as his fans would obviously do, I have always admired his tennis. So for me it's an easy decision, 3 more years. He is probably going to be in contention for some Major in that period anyway.

I'm no "glory hunter," I've been following Fed since 1998 and I choose one more slam in 2018 and retirement. Don't disparage other Fed fans because they disagree with what you want. ;)
Plus Fed's not going to retire if he wins 1 slam next year. He hasn't retired this year after he won 2. He'll keep playing as long as he can win slams.

I might why would you retire when you just won a slam at 36-37?

I'm not tied to any player in the way a true fan is but i will miss watching him play so hope he keeps going and if he enjoys it there is no reason to bow out at the top like Fawlty Towers, just keep going on and on like The Walking Dead until no one is watching any more but he is till having fun breaking new records, oldest player to win a Futures etc

Everyone who uttered the phrase "it's all gravy now" after he won #18 should live up to it and choose 3 more years. #20 can't possibly feel better than 18 or 19 did anyway. So it's not worth putting all the chips in towards it.

I'd rather have 3 more years of his sublime shotmaking that no one else on tour is capable of producing. Because when its gone, it's gone.

To be honest anything now will be anticlimactic. If he'd battled through early losses the first half of this year before gradually finding form and winning Wimbledon then that would have been the best most climactic possible outcome. OR having a great year and finishing #1, he's proved once more that he's the best even at 35. Nothing could be goatier

But having an amazing year but failing to reach number one? That's the worst. Now the whole 'heroically fighting for that one last slam' narrative is gone and finishing on a high is difficult because he probably won't reach #1 again but if he still wins a slam or two then retires then it'll feel like Borg, retiring during a period of dominance

I'm a fan of Federer (but also Nadal) because I like great tennis. But that being said, I'm ready to move on to another generation of tennis stars. That's my big hope is that some young gun will step up with panache and grace and power and blow us all away. Roger today is nothing like the mid-2000's Roger. We need a new star that gets to that level. It's sad that Nadal and Fed are winning slams as shadows of themselves. We need some serious new blood.
Reminds me of Laver's days before Borg.

In which universe is that the worst?

He'll play for at least a couple more years regardless of what happens next year. At this rate you'll have to practically drag him off the court kicking and screaming before he even contemplates announcing any retirement date. :D

Lol, so much this. I mean Federer's already been around for like a trillion years and has provided his fans with enough You Tube material to last them a lifetime - how much more do they need?! o_O

need more information. If he just plays, but doesn't play well/plays retricted due to pain, then there's at least an argument for 2018 with a slam.
But if we get to see him in full flight ala Fed-Goffin in Basel every now and again, then def. 3 more years with no slams.

Lol seriously, 3 more years of him getting worked out without winning a slam over winning a slam? It's so not that serious. Dude has been on top since 2003.
