Federer: 'I am very talented'

But what if the bull'z-ill or tired or injured like he constantly is ? Traditionally happens to him at one slam every year , so that gives him just 3 real shots at winning a slam in a year :)

(Ummm.....Nadal has made 6 of the last 7 slam finals, and the one slam final he missed was this year's AO which he won 12 out of 12 sets at before the QF in which he was injured in. 3-4 slam finals per year is enough to reach 16 slams within the next 3 years)

Though I do realize Rafa has dominated Federer head to head, there is absolutely no comparison as far as accomplishments go. Roger has done everything there is to do and holds most records. Rafa's body will crap out before he can even begin to get to the accomplishments of Federer.

This whole thread blows, The Roger lovers and Rafa lovers will never see eye to eye and Sampras fans need to come to grips with the fack that Roger is just superior...

This is not true at all. You are not considered the best ever just by holding a World Record. Current swimmers are always expected to hold it. Michael Phelps is considered the best ever since he swims and wins more races than anyone in history. He has a record 8 golds from the Olympics, 7 golds from Worlds, a slew of 6+ gold World and Olympics. He is dominant in butterly, in I.M, in relays, and can win in freestyle or backstroke. Mark Spitz swims times that would be detroyed 20 years ago and he was considered the hands down best ever until Michael Phelps far and away surpassed even him.

Really? I guess I'm wrong. Thanks for informing me about my ignorance :)

I won't make the same mistake again :)

/Because as current trends show, Rafa is just so good at turning those slam finals into victories/

Why is this a big deal? Federer said he had to work hard and wasn't tooting his own horn. If any player in the top 100 said they were talented they wouldn't be wrong in saying so... Being one of the top 100 players in a large international sport takes tremendous talent and hard work.

It's true, Federer clearly has the most talent of them all. He has the most 'moments of genius' and some of the best hand skills.

The quote:
interviewer: how do you do it?
Fed: Well, I'm definitely very talented.

WTF is wrong with that? He's good at what he does. Any pro could have said the same. You know why? BECAUSE HE'S A PROFESSIONAL PLAYER AND PEOPLE PAY MONEY TO WATCH HIM. Last time I knew people don't pay to watch people like me play tennis. If anything, I've been paid to leave.

(Federer is one of the only cases in professional sports of the most talented player in the sport also being the GOAT [for now]. Michael Jordan for example was not the most athletic player in history, nor was he the most skillful shooter. Jordan was however athletic, mentally tough as nails, and was the hardest working player in history in my opinion, despite battling knee tendinitis his entire career)

Hey, look, "Game, Set and Match Sampras" got the ban-hammer :). I don't know what's up with this troll -- he creates multiple ids just to show his fedhate and petelove, which is fine, but he does it in such an obvious manner with a distinct "signature" that makes it hard not to spot him. On top of it, he usually engages in a tirade against Roddick (maybe he hates Roddick because he could not prevent Fed from breaking Pete's records). C'mon man, learn to evolve and hide better, like some of our fellow banned posters (Davey25 for instance  ...)

What about gj? The king of all trolls.

He's gone for now, but watch him come back as match sampras.

if he wants to throw us off, he should consider "point sampras"

btw, that troll has been caught using other id's like "johnny & bjorkman fan" or something like that. Again, his tirade against roddick using the same sentences as GameSampras gave him away.

Nobody debates the best basketball or hockey player of all time. Nobody debates who the best swimmer and F1 drivers of all time are. There is alot of debate who the best tennis player of all time is though.

The relevant point, which is the reason his defenders are still engaged in a spinning Federer's every detail to sell him as a (wholly false) GOAT.

Regarding what Federer thinks about being the best: I doubt he thinks he's the best of all time---his admitting he had it easy with immature competition (which--as he said--allowed him to win so much early on) instantly kills such a perception for Federer himself...and his defenders.

Federer is the undisputed GOAT. (Stated by well respected champions who matter like Laver, Sampras etc. not schoolgirls on a tennis board)

By the way who is your GOAT Dinkvolley? Let me guess Arthur Ashe, Serena Williams? What a suprise.

It's not so much about a judgement as such on what Fed thinks of himself- anyone who's been on top of world tennis for so long, Fed or Djoker, Rafa do have a right to think so.
But the players do indulge in being diplomatic and politically correct, and have access to PR people who coach them heavily on saying the right stuff. As an example, no top player, even with a 50-0 record against his opponent in the first round will say "gonna win this one easily".

Its all part of the PR, so it is surprising Fed will say things like this, which adds to the often hurled "arrogant" perception from the anti-Feds. Maybe it's personality, or it just gets boring to sit in a 1 hour interview and keep saying the right things.

They were asking him why he's so good.

What's he supposed to say? "Oh I just work very hard." He doesn't work any harder than a hundred other guys on tour.

Ha. Eventually he is going to slip up after all of that bs and say "of course I am the greatest you dumbasses now go get me a coke. (embarrassed) I mean of course Rafa is a great champion".

Open era. As if tennis just began in the 60s. ROFL. You got guys out there with better looking resumes and more domination and longevity then Roger. By all accounts Rafa is more talented since hes the daddy. And DJokovic now is the Grand Pooba. Perhaps Talented Roger.. Maybe not talented enough to down the Spanish Warrior. The arrogance of this guy knows no bounds.

Seriously, how old are you? The guys who holds the record for most slams ever for a man says he is talented-no kidding!
Of course Federer is extremely talented. Nadal is obviously talented as well and I wouldn't begrudge him if he acknowledged it. So is Sampras. As I former S&V player I actually rooted for Pete over Andre even though his backhand is the ugliest backhand I have ever seen a pro hit. Not saying it isn't effective at times. Just horribly awkward. It is a testament to Pete's talent that he can overcome that and be one of the greatest players ever.
See, some of us can remove our bias long enough to see greatness in more than one player.

Thundervolley's been ignoring the same question again and again. But do continue to address the same question if he repeats the same crap. If he doesn't respond that proves he's lying.

^^^^ Good point. Heard of, yes. Watched, followed playing- never. There are obviously few exceptions to every rule, but as a general rule, you watch Fed, Rafa, Djoker during the very brief pre game interview, they will say the right things - "He's a good player", "It will be a very competitive match", "I will have to focus hard".
Another thing is, I would think the players are more PR coached on what to say/do nowadays than before.

I have met him and for someone who can pretty much have whatever he wants he is very down to earth. Although I had no issue with any of his responses, how someone acts with the press in a room filled with people asking clueless/obvious questions does not equate to how they really are. In person he is the type of guy who pays close attention to you when you are speaking and gets embarrassed when somebody complements him. You would be pretty surprised..
Just don't bother. On one hand, there's a likeable guy with more success than most dream of. On another there's a random forum poster, with a highly exaggerated view of himself and a know-it-all air topped with unbelievable amount of arrogance and attitude( which incidently renders him a massive hypocrite )he knows he can get away with thanks to the anonymity internet offers.

Wow! A whole big thread for nothing. Fed said he's very talented and worked his butt off to make sure he realized his potential.

What's wrong with that? (especially because It is true)

its one thing for someone like say Michael Jordan or Wayne Gretzky to say that for instance.. Guys who had no equal and never will have and who destroyed everyone and everything put in front of them and dominated the best during the peaks of their respective sports where the competition was sky high. . .. Its another thing for someone like Fed to blow his own horn. Less talented players around, weaker competition at the top during his run etc. Yes you're talented Roger.. We get it. You don't like playing tennis in the dark, your rival Rafa was one dimensional (despite whooping you for years), Djokovic was all luck at the USO etc. Finally when he got the competition at the top Fed's reign and domination goes bye bye
was this our hero's first incarnation?

Amazing... and true as well. Lucked out and still had to work damn hard not to go 2-10 vs Rafa in slams and now is back to bullying mugs and inflating (Wimbledon 2017, potentially AO 2018?). Was absolutely fantastic watching his dominance come to a stop from 2010 onwards. Kind of like a bully moving to a school with even worse bullies and realising he isn't top dog anymore. Or a fraudster getting caught red handed by undercover cops. LET'S GO CHUNG!!

Federer is holding up tennis by a thread. The guy is, for sure the best athlete of all time. When he leaves, the game is dead, enjoy it now while it lasts. After he leaves? I mean come on? After he leaves?: Who is on the horizon? Shappy? Ching? Awful to watch players by themselves. As foils, good, maybe great, but stand alones? Awful. the game if I could short it I would dedicate 90 million usd against tennis after federer wins. I make 50 million with my hands tied behind my back.

Tennis please. Make a economic algo to bet against tennis.. I will put up 40 million usd against tennis the day federe retires. And as usual bank massive. every day man massive bank

Remember GameSampras during 2009 FO after Nadal lost? Now that was what you call a meltdown.

TW posters these days are like tame kittens in comparison.

don't remember the details, but probably was something like nadal being injured, soderling with a fluky performance , federer being lucky with nadal and djokovic going out blah blah blah, in it ?

I remember him whining and going into meltdown about the roof in Wimbledon 2012 though.
