Federer in final- disapointed?

Am I the only one that is somewhat disapointed? I mean, I like Federer, but I want to see someone else win some grand slams. When you know who is going to be in the final of every tournament and win almost every match it takes away some of the fun. Competition is what makes pro sports so great. I would like to see someone else challenge Federer (in every match, Nadal fans). Does anyone else feel the same way?

Nope.

You're watching history being made.

I for one appreciate what Roger is doing. We may never see this type of dominance ever again in any sport.

No for me too. You cannot take away from a guy that plays like Federer.

Did you root against Jack Nicklaus in the 1986 Masters? Or, Jimmy Connors in his last good chance at the US Open? I think not!

nope. because the other guys don't play as well. they don't deserve to get to the final or to win this championship.

well you're right in a way that it kills the excitment in the game but on the other hand we are witnessing a phenomena of tennis perfection that's probably won't happen again in the near future ..

I agree but beware of the fury unleashed upon us by Fed admirers. This is taboo stuff.

I'm not just a Fed Admirer, I'm a fan of tennis.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I never liked Federer at ALL until after Wimbledon last year. I thought he was just a so-so player till I actually sat down and analyzed his play.

I isntantly became a fan though after that match, and I've supported his quest for 15 ever since. There's just nothing to merit not being a fan of Federer unless you don't like how he dominates.

He's a trickshot artist, he's got tons of power, and his fundamentals are perfect. It's rare to have a combination of all 3 in one player.

Sure it isn't VERY interesting to see other people step up, but I'm perfectly fine with Federer dominating. I want to see him with the Calender Slam.

To be honest I do like when Federer wins and I would like to see him win the Grand Slam this year or even the Golden Slam next year. I would however like a competitive match. For example, the Roddick match last night, I expected Andy to be able to more last night than he did. Roger was like a pitbull with a bone and he wasn't going to let Andy share in any of it. So like I said I want to see Roger win, but I also want to see him work for it.

I'm not sure why you're disappointed just because he's in the finals. What did you expect??

If you want to watch competitive matches, then just stay away from watching Federer altogether.

Besides, you had the chance to watch all the other losers for the past 2 weeks throughout the entire tournament play against each other. In fact, I saw WAAAAYY more matches of other players than I did watching Federer. I think two of his most recent matches were at 3 AM. And if you miss the replay at 3PM, then you don't get to watch him play at all.

So now you're gonna ***** about the ONE match at the end just because you don't like how dominant he is???

Totally insane.

So so player???? After wimbledon last year he had already accumulated eight grand slams in the span of three years. I just find it hard to believe that you thought he was a so so player with that amount of hardware, especially if you watch tennis. Even the casual observer of tennis knows that he is more than so-so.

Uh admittedly, I was biased towards Sampras (because he was an American) and I was biased against Federer. I thought he was overrated and just happened to be lucky to win his slams.

THen I sat down and watched him play and I saw how smooth and awesome his play is.

ding ding ding! give that man the prize!

sports is all about competiveness, sure. but sometimes . . . you just gotta sit back and enjoy the magic. magic don't come round every day, you know.

Listen, I agree with your post and I'll defend you but you're really trying to go against the grain in here. It's like that King (Cuchulain or Canute) who tried to fight back the surf with a sword.... it has since become a metaphor for a hopeless battle of some kind. In other words, saying anything remotely negative about Federer.

Sorry, Mr. Roddick fan, but I love watching fed dominate. It is fun to watch.

Does anybody else feel like something's missing when you watch other matches beside Federer? My bro and I both agreed on this.
I guess we're just spoiled by Federer's play, just like Tiger Woods at the USOpen lol, not everybody plays like Federer. When you watch that level of tennis, the lower level of baseline to baseline until someone makes an unforced errors just gets plain.

I am not disappointed to see Fed in final. He produces the finest shots in tennis.

I am a little disappointed that the other half has not come out an exciting opponent to Fed, e.g. Nadal. But Haas and Gonza are good matchup too.

and we already see the best match: Fed vs Roddick. This semi was disappointing actually because Roddick didn't play at his best.

Everyone talks about how they are tired of Fed's dominance. At the sametime people argue that if they want competition and don't appreciate brilliant tennis. I think in the end, what everyone wants is someone to lift their level and play at fed's level. It takes to players to create a truly memorable match.

It is a hard call to make, i want to see Fedachieve the season grand slam and pass sampras' 14 slams but at the same time i would love to see gonzo win a slam.

It's a win-win situation for fans. Federer wins, you get to see the (perhaps) greatest of all time playing in his prime; history making stuff. Gonzo wins, (however unlikely) you are witness to a huge upset.

I want to witness someone taking The Grand Slam (all four slams). That would be such a special thing to witness, I will remember something like that for the rest of my life.

I also woulde like to see Federer brake the Sampras record of 14 slams, because I think Federer is better than Sampras was and Federer deserves to be at the top of that list.

So until both of the above have been fulfilled, I will be extremely happy to see Federer win Grand Slams. I mean, maybe not everyone realises this or doesn't agree, but we are witnessing a very special tennis era, with possible the greatest tennis player that has lived thusfar.

Ditto. That and he has one of the most well rounded and beautiful games, if not the most beautiful ever.
But I have to say, if Gonzo wins I might be a bit disappointed to not wittness a calender Grand Slam, but more so I'd be really happy for Gonzalez, who deserves a GS after his last 4 matches and the skill he showed.
So it's a win-win situation for me! I really like this years AO!! :D

It is what it is. Is it his fault that he wins all the time? Did he cheat to win? You're channeling your frustrating at the wrong person. Maybe you should be angry at Nadal for not playing better to make it to the final? Honestly, sometimes it seems you're more of a Fed hater than a Nadal fan.

Well hmm... I used to like him, but this thread has got me starting to not like Federer.

Roddick, Gonzo, and Blake have games that are much more fun to watch. Elegance like Fed doesn't hold up in professional sports.

I'm the fan of the underdog!

Are you joking? I hate watching Roddick b/c there is no elegance in his game. He has a terrible attitude, and most of the time he doesnt have enough game to back it up. I think many people will agree that class such as fed's is what the game was originally made for, and is still a breath of fresh air in todays game.

Funny how we all wish we knew the secret on how to dominate tennis - but as soon as we see someone who has that formula - we immediately switch off the TV set because we call it "boring".

Its hard to please you guys.

You guys never take into consideration on what you can learn about dominance other than "hitting a great shot".

Am I joking? Why is football America's favorite sport? Fiercness, intensity, toughness. That's why tennis is like the lowest watched professional sport ahead of televised fencing. I don't know any kids at all who want to watch Federer. Many people on these boards will agree because they are old tennis fans.

There is something about toughness that the general public likes, and that's why the general public doesn't like tennis.

I don't wanna see Federer hit elegant one-handed backhands, I want to see Bernard Hopkins KO his opponent in the 15th round with a killer haymaker, and KICK SOME ASS!

Sadly, you're pretty on the money - at least in reference to the American general public. The "agree because they're old tennis fans" part, not so much. I'd attribute it more to a wider perspective than age, per say.

But I love watching Fed. Watching the Fed/Roddick match, Roddick looked like a hyper little kid and Fed like a graceful master. Roddick takes all of these short choppy steps to get to the ball and Fed takes fewer, longer, gliding strides. So much more fun to watch Fed do his thing with unbelievable dominance, genius, and grace than to watch Roddick follow a great forehand winner with a blown chippie volley or two to get himself down double break point.

All of the talk Mary Carillo was unleashing about Fed forcing other players to both raise their games and return to an all-court style ... as tiring as it got hearing her say it (but what else could they talk about during such a blowout?), I hope it comes true.

Watching serve and volley is fun. Watching Fed and Gonzo, and even Murray's gameplan v. Nadal (though he ultimately lost) is fun. Watching serve, stand on the baseline, and bound the ball gets old after a few games.

Hopefully the Gonzo/Fed final will be fun to watch. Hopefully Gonzo will keep up his amazing play. And hopefully Fed will dominate him anyway. I'm all for Fed dominating his way through all four slams this year - would like nothing better from pro tennis than to see that kind of history being made.

If you dont like watching players with great strokes and awesome shots, what about tennis intriques you? I know for me seeing a beautiful 1hbh or forehand winner with accuracy and pace is the most satisfying thing in sports. And who better to watch then Fed master too see this.

Those are the match-ups I like to see. I agree with you. Don't get me wrong, I like Federer. I think he is amazing and a great guy, but I also love competition in pro sports, and that's why I like those match-ups we saw previously in the Australian Open.

Okay, so I'm a newbie here! *waves shyly*

But obviously I love tennis, else I wouldn't really be here. And I just wanted to give my opinions on the whole Federer matter [so please don't yell at me or anything]

It's undeniable that Federer is one of the greatest tennis players of all time. It's a pleasure to watch the way that he handles the game and the way in which he achieves his victories so seamlessly. He is a true proffessional, no doubt. So, if I'm watching a match with Federer in - needless to say -I am never bored. Infact I'm watching avidly, for an ounce of pressure or anything that would make him seem remotely phased and it's so rare that I can barely recall any instances where he has done so.

However, the other side of the coin is clear to me too. It's understandable that people are getting fed up with Federer winning everything all the time; people have said the same thing in other sports such as Golf with Tiger Woods etc. However, to everyone I would just like to say that like all the greats, Roger Federer will eventually drop down and there will be other players who are number one instead. Nothing lasts forever. So - as hard as it sometimes may be - try to appreciate that we're in the era of a great and watch some darn good tennis.

Oh, just want to add that Roddick is one of my favourites so I was upset to see him go - but to lose to Federer isn't that shameful. Knowing Andy, he'll take it as a learning curve.
