Federer pulls out of Shanghai

"World number three Roger Federer has pulled out of next month's Shanghai Masters to rest and recover after a gruelling summer."

http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/23092011/58/tired-federer-skip-shanghai-masters.html

He also pulled out of the 2009 inaugural event citing fatigue.

So no appearance in Asia at all for Federer this year. His Asian fans aren't going to be too happy!

According to Andy Murray, the top players were supposed to be meeting the ATP organisers in Shanghai to discuss possible changes to the schedule. Seems like Fed is distancing himself from this.

If Djokovic also pulls out then that's another heavyweight who will also be absent from any such meeting?

a shame but probably the right move, Fed knows what he's doing and always seem to get his schedule right so hopefully he'll have gotten over that USO loss and be raring to go for Basel, Paris and WTF's, so how many point will drop off, Murray will be closing on him for 3rd place, but i suppose Murray has a 1000 points to defend so it can't happen in Shanghai

Federer drops 600 points by not playing Shanghai. He's guaranteed to drop a further 250 by not defending Stockholm. That's 850 so far. If Murray defends Shanghai and wins Tokyo,he will overtake him. All ifs but within the realms of possibility.

ah rite i see, yer could be trouble by the time WTF's rolls around, but i suspect Roger won't really care as long as he's in the top 4

That's very surprising and disappointing. I guess regaining the #1 ranking (or even holding on to #3) isn't that important after all. Knowing Fed's history, I kind of expected the thread to be a joke.

If he gets injured due to fatigue, he will not be able to compete at all for some time. I think he is wise by not playing if he needs rest.

He never retires in matches and that is because of his great conditioning and also by knowing when to get into a tennis court and when not to.:)

It's tactical move from Fed so he can meet again with Nole @ AO SF.

Whether he's #3 or #4 the chances of Novak drawing Fed in the SF are "random" :), so it doesn't make any difference. If Fed drops to #5 (or worse) then a lot of new possiblities come into play.

He wants to be #4 so ATP can come with an excuse that rankings got changed (as it's getting hard to give excuses at this point I guess) thus we get another Djokerer SF and Rafito gets another Youzhny/Verdasco/Ferrer/Berdych pack in his part by accident as usual.

Imagine if Fed were to slip out of top 4, we'd most likely get Djokerer slam QF :)

It's really funny that no matter how 1-4 rankings tumble out Djokerer SF remains a constant.

And it sucks that #3 and #4 ranked players play each other so rarely.

Past 2 years, it were Nole/Murray now it's Fed/Murray.

Your all conspiracy theories re: Nole/Fed in same half are silly. But whatever amuses people.

Last year, Roger/Murray #2/#4 were in the same group while Novak/Rafa were in the same group - #1/#3. Previous year, Rafa/Novak were in the same group #2/#3 and Murray/Roger were in the same group #1/#4. So Rafa/Murray and Nole/Roger would actually be something new there. What does it matter at the WTF anyway? If you're good enough to get to the WTF final, you'll probably face the top people anyway either in your group or in the semis. Anyway, carry on.

Well-spoken. Health comes first.

I'm sure he knows the ranking points he's risking; I'm sure he also wants to win Basel.

I'm also sure he heard what happened to Novak when he kept playing and playing and didn't quit. Egg or no egg.
