This off course is a pretend or what if scenario as it never happened ,Roger Federer is arguably one the greatest tennis players on a grass surface because he has won seven gentleman's singles titles at Wimbledon a joint all time record shared with Pete Sampras and William Renshaw . but what if he won the epic 5 set 2008 Wimbledon final to Rafael Nadal that he had lost in a tie break 9 games to 7 he would have won seven straight titles by 2009, obviously as Federer won again in 2012 where he beat Andy Murray that would have been his record 8th title you think that would have placed Federer the greatest grass court player ever , because he would not have just had a record 8 titles but would have won from 2003- 2009 seven consecutive Wimbledon crowns which would have insane.

Yes that would have immediately established him as GOAT beyond all reasonable doubt. It was the loss of both this match and AO 09 again to his nemesis which really hurt his legacy. Of course now...

That is still a painful match to watch even 9 years on, do you think Federer should have won the final set tie break he was at one point 2 points away and a break up, do you think if he had won 7 in 7 years would that have been better than Sampras who won 7 in 8 years

What is this drivel

Why is it drivel ! I am asking a what if Federer had not lost that 2008 5 set final to Nadal then he could have won 7 singles titles in 7 years and would that have been better than Sampras who won 7 in 8 years , and would have been the GOAT on grass considering his victory 2012 would have been his eight ?

He has 6/7 and 5 in a row which is good dominance too.

But yes the 08 loss was a painful one. Thankfully he bounced back since then.

It was I was 21 at the time I remember he had so many chances in the tie break to break nadal I think the darkness effected him It would have been fantastic had he won 7 straight Wimbledon's that have been better than Sampras who won 7 in 8 years

Still gutted Fed didn't win. Could have sent Nadal into pre-mature retirement right there. Golden opportunity missed, and the tennis world paid dearly.

Yes.That would had been remarkable. Both all-time records of consecutive and overall titles at Wimbledon.Just like Nadal at the FO.

Once he missed to win the second set after being 4-1 up, he didn't deserve to win. After that he was simply delaying the inevitable. 3rd set came back from 0-40 down, 4th set saved those match points. 5 th set had a breakpoint but couldn't capitalise.
Wonder why he didn't play that intense in the first two sets

W08 win for Fed would've changed the dynamics of their rivalry by a mile margin. It hurt him badly, mentally and in confidence, badly there. And the AO09 hurt on top of another.

No, that would have only maintained the status quo. Winning elevated Nadal and losing devalued Fed. But winning would not have changed much for Fed.

Unfortunately Federer was still recovering from the ailment he had around the AO, and the consequent impact on training. He still was able to go five sets. IF he had been well ...

otoh, When someone else got knocked out of FO 09, it was immediately put down to injury to take credit away from Fed.

The double standards here !!! :D

The semi finalist Rainer schuttler that Nadal beat actually took nadal to a tie break in one of the sets Federer would have found him routine prey in the final so had nadal lost in that semi final or before it would have been a virtual certainty Federer would have won a sixth straight crown had he played Schuttler who was unseeded that year a joke how he made it to the semi finals. it is such a shame he lost the 2008 one, from 2 sets down to get it back to level he played the game of his life but when the rain came before the tiebreal and then was not able to capitalise against break point chances But it would not have been surprising if Federer had got 7 in a row. He was supremely dominant on grass between 2003 and 2009 ,So 7 in a row for time span was extremely possible.
I think had he won 7 in a row from 2003-2009 plus the 2012 title he'd be considered the greatest Wimbledon champion of all time as would have had one more W. title than Sampras Also, had he won WB in 2008 , he maybe would have lost one the next year. OP don't understand that a change here, would possibly change other things after that. losing that final although it was cruel as he should have won the tie break probably helped Federer because he would have been on after that final on 6 straight titles and might not have won anymore as the pressure of trying to break the all time record of 7 straight the next year, but beating nadal which would have been 3 years in a row would have inspired him to win more he might not have gone from 2009-2012 without winning he could have gone onto to 9 titles

it is academic to think had Federer won 08 Wimbledon then he would have had 7 straight titles as no one really stood in his way from 2003-2009 apart from Roddick and Nadal

That match should have been delayed as they were playing in darkness for most of the 5th set.
Lol it ended at 9:15 which is how long they are playing right now before stopping due to light. So I don't think most of the 5th set was in the dark..... Guess they should have gave fed night vision goggles like rafa had......
