First hit with Max 200G...

Any chance you might be able to help another fellow looking for one or two of those magic sticks? I have a couple 300i and am contemplating grabbing a couple 400i, but there is only one 200g in my quiver and I would love to get a couple of nice ones at a good price if possible...

I highly doubt that flashfire's friend really uses the Max200G. I think flash has made a mistake. The Max200G has been out of production since 1992 and the Injection Molding equipment was discarded when the factory in England was shut down.

If for some reason she does use Max 200G's, would you like to raid all of Dunlop's warehouses with me?:)

I raid it if there is real IMF Max200G's. There is no way she is using a 81sq in head size racquet that is 12.5-13oz strung playing with it in the ITF juniors. She would be using a racquet that is more demanding than Federer's. Also the Max200G has been out of production since 1992. They are long gone.

And they're not that hard to find. There's always a buttload on the big auction site, in several degrees of quality, for all kinds of wallets.

That's the problem, it seems that most of the time you find them in NOS or excellent condition, they are going for $200+... I guess that I wish you could still get NOS sticks for about 150 and used in great condition for about $100...

Not to mention the Dutch thriftstores...They have been my main "supplier" of fair to excellent condition MAX 200G's.

You just gave me another reason to make me go back there this summer...

Check the one in Almere (4000 m2), Uithoorn (Ceres) and in Zoetermeer (Pelgrimshoeve).
But basically, any thrift store or "Kringloop winkel" as they are called overhere, has the potential to score hidden gems and treasures.....

If only I could get back to Holland this summer... Maybe play the grass at 's-Hertogenbosch... But alas...

BTW - the Yamaha in you sig is stunning, so much that I had to page through your entire collection of racquet photos to get a look at the whole racquet. Great site.

It is a great racket... there's a down the line side spin backhand that I can hit with it that no other racket comes close to doing. It doesnt fit well with my new SW forehand but back when I was eastern it was so lovely. Great for returns, volleys, serve placement and accuracy in general... you can just wail away and it keeps flatter shots in.

Back in the 80's my friend's and I called it The Doom Log

I have very moderate grips and am conservative on the spin. When it comes to serves and volleys, the 200g or 300i are just in a league of their own in my book. It also give me a lot more consistency from the baseline which helps my game a lot.

I love the moniker 'doom log' - best description I've heard; the racquet has such a unique heft... You need some time to wind it up, but once that baby gets moving, there is nothing like it.

Thanks, I hav'nt spent a lot of time lately to update my site.
I've got heaps of pics still waiting to be published but so little time.
I'm in the process of moving al my rackets out of the house in to a shed or storage to properly photograph and catalog them.
Well, at the end of the summer I may be able to realize this goal.

Bringing this thread back after about a month and a few hits on clay and I've come to the conclusion that it's absolutely unforgiving.

Since I usually have very flat shots from the baseline I could not handle it and because of the incoming balls had much spin on them I simply could not add any power compared to when I play indoors on carpet, where it's absolutely fantastic. When trying to add spin, it just felt like the ball went anywhere but inside the court, which it probably did too. It just felt cumbersome to move around compared to my everyday racquet which is a 98 and weighs about an ounce less. How Graf even won French Opens with it is beyond me... I want to try the PS85 too to see if that would help, otherwise I'll move to the midplus IMF's...

If you're going to hang out behind the baseline you need to take a huge swing with the racket. However, I've found that stepping in closer, taking the ball on the rise and using the heft of the racket to keep the pace on the ball until you get an opening to put it away has been very effective for me the little bit that I play on clay. Of course I usually just try to work my way to the net regardless of the surface, so that my help me too...

I certainly wouldn't call the 200g unforgiving, just very demanding (but rather rewarding too).

I'm pretty sure i've hit with the Dunlop MAX 200G for a few minutes before. cant quite say though cause i didn't inquire bout the racquet much when i got the chance. My friend's dad has it. all i remember him say was bout a Dunlop. also his was worn out or pretty old looking. most of the green paint was faded away except for some areas. it was a solid great racquet. (thumbs up)

Hey all!

I got a Max200G as a gift from my lady a few days ago! Man is it a sweet racket! I've had a week straight of rain, so I'm waiting for it to clear up to take it out for a hit!

Other then Natty Gut, what are some solid string/tension choices for it? I was thinking something like X-1 17? It's got a bit more pop especially at 50ish lbs?

Thanks everyone! I love that it has the original Fairway leather on it. SUCH a comfy grip!

McEnroe used gut and also Gamma Gut 2. For me, the frame was not very string-sensitive; just about any synthetic gut strung at the magic 55 pounds would do the trick.

Really contrasted with my experience with the Wilson Pro Staff 6.0/85, which was highly string sensitive: I needed a soft multi in there to mitigate the shock.

Thank you! :) I couldn't seem to find a rec string tension. 55lbs sounds just good to me!

I'd suggest a 17g string for sure. I like Gamma Professional and plan to try Babolat Excel Power 17 some time soon as well...

Im gonna get my new to me 200G strung with gamma synthetic gut at 50 (that's what Id string em at in the 80s with prince syn gut, every week). I used a 200G from 1984-1992

The racket allows me to do really cool things with my backhand returns... incredibly accurate down and on the line punches in the ad court.

such a unique racket

All hail the Max 200G

I would never, NEVER get rid of my old Max 200G. Had it for over 25 years and still love it. The only thing that's come close is the BLX Six One Tour I use now but even then...

But I'd love to get hold of a Donnay Midwood 18. Had one in my early teens and used it the first time I beat my Dad - an historic occasion if ever there was one!!! That was my all time favourite racket until it flew out of my sweaty teenage hand during a serve and smashed on the tarmac. :(

Although, I suppose if that hadn't happened, I wouldn't have bought the Max 200G. All things for a reason...:)

17 gauge is nice in a Max 200 G. It gives more grip on the ball, perhaps a bit more spin----something very difficult to put on a ball with that size head and that dense a string bed. I think the mass of the frame is what's putting power on the ball.

I'd agree about the mass providing the power. an 84 sq.in. head with an 18x20 string pattern makes for a very dense pattern by today's standards - certainly not quite as bad as a 72" wooden racquet with the same pattern, but it's definitely a tight one. I like a nice, thin, elastic string in it - that really makes it a wonderful tool for the surgical dismemberment of an opponent...

It has a well documented trampoline effect and since the moulded holes are a little larger it makes the 84 inch frame very lively yet predictably so. The mass is key.

My frequent hitting partner and I are getting ours strung up and will play a set in august. I think my youngest brother sold my old 200g when I was off living like an adult and he was a 30 year old living with my parents. Im just glad I replaced it, though its a type 2 and my original was a type 1 with just the UK patent. Idiot brother back then but he's got his act together now.

Interesting comment: never heard anyone before talk about a trampoline effect. I played with the frame about 10 years and never noticed it. . . but then I come from an earlier era, when the Max 200 G might have been considered a stiffer frame.

Yeah I have a 300i. Its a good frame. Same mold. A ted bit stiffer but not much. I still prefer the flexier 200 though. Never tried a 150 or 400.

I play the 150g for fun somtimes and can only say what i BEAST !!! With this little headsize you can blast away pinpoint balls down the lines without a dout. I like this racquet very much but you have to be exact when hitting the ball. If the timing is off it feels uncomfortable. It s really worth to give it a try.

1 string my Max with 23kg and experienced this trampoline effect with every stroke , and my balls kept flying out. Now I have a damperer and the effect is gone.
Before i played with more modern frames that are more stiff than the MAX, so I was caught by surprise when I experiensed this trampoline effekt on the MAX.
