After he retires I think he will be considered the best clay court player ever if he continues getting the results he has in the past.

He's still too young. If he keeps the winning streak, plus a couple of extra FO's, I wouldn't mind labeling as the most dominant claycourter ever.
I don't like the "Greatest" label. There is not a 'GREATEST' in any sport, since sport forms, rules (and tennis wise, technology) change all the time.

Yup, Borg was the best that I've seen. But Nadal is very very good. Lot's of players have been as good as or better than Muster -- Vilas, Kuerten for example.

The greatest player on clay ever is Borg.
But when all is said and done, Nadal could very well be. In fact, he could probably snatch that mantle from Borg in his late 20s because at this point I can't see anybody beating him consistently on clay or if ever. I can see him capture > 6 French Opens before he hits 30.
Of course Borg had 6 when he was what 25?
If Borg played longer he might have had > 14 GS. He surely would have had a couple more FOs.

I think basketball and soccer can have a GOAT, but not tennis. As mentioned earlier, racket technology has advanced.

In basketball, the rules have also changed a lot. For example, today's handcheck benefits wings players. Zone defense give post players a greater disadvantage than previous eras. Then there is the introduction of the three point line. In terms of technology, scouting and fitness technology has improved. Basketball today is not like basketball in the 60s or 70s. In the 80s, an athletic player like MJ was quite unique. Now we have guys like Vince Carter, Kobe, TMac, Lebron, Wade, and etc. Not to mention these guys have the advantage of learning from watching players before them who learnt from watching players before them and etc. It's almost like an evolution advantage.

Best player on clay--Borg. Not even close yet. 2nd best--Vilas. Nadal may be 3rd, but even that is a stretch. Guys like Wilander, Kuerten, Muster, Lendl were all pretty good clay courters that some people who have been around long enough to actually see them play would rate higher than Nadal.

No, seriously, I remember Borg losing the Argentine Open final to Vilas at age 16 ! ! !
Nadal might become a better clay player than Borg or not, but, unlike the great Bjorn, I can't see him winning Wimbledon. Dominating the clay circuit is not enough the become the #1.
I can see how Federer improves his clay skills, but can't se Nadal getting any better in other surfaces.

Gaudio is a mental flake ... has the competition really been that tough? You can only beat who is in front of you so this is not to take anything away from Nadal. I'm sorry but I'll have to disagree..... I find hard to believe that anyone will ever be as good as Michael Jordan in Basketball. he's the Greatest of that sport without a doubt.Andres Guazzelli said:

RiostheGenius -- in Sth America there may be a dispute about whether Maradonna or Pele were the GOAT. In Manchester we know it was Norman Whiteside (with Rooney coming up on the rails)! Just a pity that Norman played international footbal for Northern Ireland and that in football the GOAT may never have the chance to show how good he is internationally because of the team he plays for.

I am very much familiar with Rooney and you may say the same thing about Michael Laudrup, Paul Gascoigne, Ronaldinho or whoever you please. Football and its greatest player is a subjective topic and it never ends.crosscourt said:
