Gut suggestions to cross with Silverstring

I really like Silverstring 1.20 for a full bed... it does everything pretty well (while being the master of none) and doesnt kill the arm even in a full bed.

But Ive been thinking about trying gut in the crosses to stretch the time between stringing (I get 10 hours of play with a full bed) and to add a touch more power, feel and comfort . I do like a pretty firm bed with very consistent response (hence the Prestige 18x20) so Im thinking of keeping the Silverstring mains with a gut as a cross... perhaps Pacific since it is a bit stiffer in feel (and I like that).

Im an all courter 4.5 with a very big serve and return game... I do play a tad guga-esque (not as well of course but similar strokes like the backhand and tactics... though I prefer faster courts for the free points on serve and return winners). I attack the net whenever possible but with the rackets and strings today Im forced to only come in on the best approach shots. I hit a lot of winners of the backhand side so I can and do hang back when the net just becomes an invitation for lobbing.

In the 80's I couldn't stand gut (so elastic) but I think it might rock as a hybrid. I prefer a firm stringbed that emphasizes consistency because I really hit out.

Well, as much as you might think you won't like it, I tried out gut mains and silverstring crosses and it played really well. If you like playing from the ground though, I would HIGHLY suggest trying out Black5Edge mains and gut crosses. Currently my favorite setup of all time.

Which gut did you settle on and tensions? Pacific, a particular VS?

Im definitely always looking to attack the net. B5E was ok but I prefer silverstring on my 18x20 stick... especially for approaches and net work.

I prefer BHSR to B5E but B5E is a good string, I can play with it.

You rock, very helpful. Your description of volleys with the SS/ Gut combo sound similar to what Im looking for.

Im considering Pacific tough Gut 16L as either a main or cross: http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/Pac..._Gut_16L_String/descpageACPACIFIC-PTG16L.html .

Im a bit hesitant to go gut mains as I really dont like elastic strings so for now Ill try gut crosses... For example I loved volkl cyclone 18 but it was too elastic for me, I need a very linear/consistent response for my backhand... that grip generates tons of head speed. Reminds me that Guga was one of the first to play with a full bed of luxilon (on a PT57A) and I suspect that stiffness on the backhand is part of the reason... I can confirm that stringbed stiffness and high spin potential is confidence inspiring on that stroke.

How about kevlar mains with gut crosses, or silverstring crosses? After a few hits, kevlar softens up a lot and gives great control, spin, and a confident stiff feel at net. The only thing lacking is some power on return of serve, but the stable feel more than makes up for it. In a prestige mp 18x20, Ashaway 18g kevlar mains at 52 lbs, with silverstring 1.20 crosses at 48 lbs might be pretty nice once broken in.

You might want to just order a pack of tough gut and try it out both ways.
