Has Davis Cup fallen off the radar ?

Yes, I am sorry to disappoint you, I am actually discussing tennis on tennis threads and QDC on QDC threads. I am strange that way.

Quasi DC and DC. Not the same. Learn the difference.

There is nothing "tennis" about what you are doing and I am pretty sure that I "knew the difference" between the two formats before you even knew that there is a new format (I have a lot of friends in ST and DTB)

DC was a casualty of the ITF/ATP divide. Pity that those organizations could be so greedy and shortsighted.

Spot on. The ATP could have worked with the ITF to preserve the Davis Cup, but have gone out of their way to sabotage it .. or at best not support it, through scheduling and promotion.

The new format, a far cry from what made Davis Cup great, is the ITF's last ditch effort to try and keep the competition going.

Through the ATP Cup, the ATP will thoroughly outspend the ITF and Davis Cup will die. Which is exactly what the ATP wants.

Players need input into how tennis is run, but the ATP by design is an organisation of self interest .. not that of the sport.

ATP started as what it says on the label. Unfortunately, the sport has become an attraction to business interests that have nothing to do with the sport, and so it started to go down the drain. The ATP board and executives are growing more and more detached from the sport too, and the recent altercations concerning Gimelstob showed it very well.

It started to go down the drain in 1988. Lendl could see it and tried to resist, but lobbyists being what they are, gathered too much support to be stopped.

It's now like a runaway gold train with everyone down the back filling their pockets and no-one up front looking at where to go.

Another point that has not been talked much about, is how ATP will not be giving ranking points for ITF futures events starting on 2020.

ATP really wants to eat the whole pie and they've been chipping away at the ITF's slice for years.

Shakira will perform at the closing ceremony of the 2019 Davis Cup Final in Madrid.
She is Gerard Piqué's partner and mother of his children.

Sorry to say, but he has such a punchable face.
And that's never a good thing to have if you're a millionaire football player married to a singer who thinks he can do whatever he likes to my favourite sport and its traditions.

Yes, the new Davis Cup is a joke.
I am so happy my country could win it with Del Po in 2016, after so much suffering and failed attempts.
If that had not happened, winning it by the new format would not have the same value, in my opinion.
They have destroyed the Davis Cup.

Unfortunately, and because it's being super-promoted, they'll double down on it even if it objectively fails.
And fans will have no choice but to watch it (since there's nothing else on).
Time will make it succeed, because it's in the nature of fandom to make the rivalries (either national or between player fanbases) more important than the integrity of the sport.
In the end, this will start "counting" for GOAT debates and to compare one player's performance to another's, and will ultimately be accepted just because it's already there.
Fans will get used to anything.

I was writing an article about DC for work on Monday. Looking up some info, I realized this year’s edition had just started. Still haven’t checked results.

I wonder why you're so selective when it comes to sharing content? Yes, Zverev said he didn't wanted to play a tournament at the end of a season (which btw is different to an exho). But he also said very clearly he didn't want to play in this new Davis Cup 'cause he didn't see it as the Davis Cup at all. It was a matter of principles. He said that way before he was even scheduled to play the exho tour, and has remained consistent with his recent comments.

ya I’m no zev fan but most players are done after USO, who wants to play an EXTRA week? and in this new/weird “DC” event? also, what is wrong with making money? He’s a professional tennis player

Interesting one for me as I've never watched Davis Cup since I started watching tennis in early 90's (mainly due to the fact that I am from Ireland and we don't produce good tennis players/never really competing)......However this week has me engaged - I wonder are there many more like me?...........Definitely could do with a few changes such as scheduling.....

I went to the official Davis Cup site, as linked on the first page of this thread, and looked around. It's not very user friendly IMO. It lists country vs country matches, not who the players in the match are. And they only take credit card numbers, not a proxy service like PayPal.

Perhaps if I were more interested in the Davis Cup (I'm not) I would have looked around more and maybe found something I'd be willing to pay to watch.... But they don't make it easy, so I guess I'll have to wait till the lead-up the the AO for my next tennis fix.

they already don't give ATP points for future events since 2019.
Instead, there are ITF points, and top ranked players can access qualies for Challengers.

It was a weird transformation, but weren't they looking to cancel it? I thought it was deemed as a failed project.

Tom Cruise has lots of friends in "high places" too, yet he has the brain of a walnut.

It's not who you know, it's the IQ.

Murray not playing today? Is he physically OK?

No to the first and and I don't think he is to the second. He barely scraped through his match yesterday and, frankly, was lucky to win it (as he himself admitted). Given he hasn't played since Antwerp I'm a bit concerned about him.

Most countries seem to televise only their own teams... Which is pretty lame.

But hey, it's only QDC. It's a failure already. They killed DC and now they are dancing on its grave like loons.

Have to agree. I hate this new format and it doesn't seem to bear any comparison to the former (great) one. Very sad! :(

Any word on the kind of injury?

You've copy-pasted this nonsense on several QDC threads.

QDC = Quasi Davis Cup.

Trying to use SPAIN - the HOST TEAM - to prove the stands are full is the silliest argument you could have pulled out...

Spain doesn't play in all the matches, right?

Just in a fraction...

OMG! You don't recognize the man (in a red shirt) who is playing! o_O

You have obviously never seen him playing (on TV & online). o_O

This has long term repercussions for the sport.

Most player development is managed by the national tennis organizations, all of the current crop of Canadians were trained through Tennis Canada, and the national organizations justify their existence for public funding by pointing to the Davis Cup.

If you cut off the national organizations from their raison d'etre, this will damage the player development system for future decades.

The sport will be damaged long term by the demise of Davis Cup.

Wisshful thinking. The Davis Cup won't die. players need to participate in the Davis CUp in order to qualify for the Olympics.

They only can make one exception if I recall correctly. The will allow Federer to participate, he will recieive a special dispensation for his career.

That would require a rule change which as the Davis Cup becomes less important, would be easy to make. Look how much the Olympics have changed over the years - from allowing sports such as tennis, baseball and golf to be competitive events, as well as even allowing professional athletes to compete. Changing the basics of who can play for a country would be a simple matter.

Trying to watch in the US here--but play is in such a narrow window and sometimes when I checked it out it wasn't on.
Sad, some classic matches in the Davis Cup and a great place for new stars to bud.
