Hitting Speed of Average College Player

I was watching a bunch of college tennis matches on YouTube, and I saw some pretty heavy looking serves. It made me wonder how fast most college level tennis players hit in their forehands, serves, and backhands.

By the way, I'm referring primarily to the mens tennis teams.

100+ for serves of the top D1 teams. i think i remember at the ncaa team championships the forehands were 70-80 mph iirc

don't be too concerned with power. its important but the game isn't all about power.

I agree, and probably all of us have known of, or worked with a player that fell in love with a speed gun. They could win with their second serve because it was consistent, but would crank and crank, destroying their technique, but just waiting for the gasp from the crowd. When I coached, I used to instruct my players that if the big flamer got one in, really lay on the compliments "wow, I doubt Roddick hits that hard." Generally that insured about a 20% accuracy, and a win. But he got that one big serve in.

u mean D1 players in SEC, or D1 players in the southland conferance? there are big differences...Just because someone plays D1 tennis does not mean they are as good as LaCroix or Slilam

It’s more about hitting a consistent heavy shot than massive pace. Unless you’re going for a winner, the average rally shot isn’t really hard, it’s consistent, heavy, hard to attack and meant to set-up the point.

when I was in college one of my neighbors in the dorm asked me to hit with him once because he was thinking about trying out as a walk on. the first time we stopped to get some water I remember him asking me "do you hit everything as hard as you can?"

the part of that comment I like to focus on is not the part about hitting as hard as you can (the funny thing is I was holding back), but that to him it seemed that every ball was like that. merely hitting hard can only take you so far. one difference between being a good high school or junior tennis player and being a good college player is the ability to hit that shot consistently, with accuracy, from anywhere on the court, on the run, etc.

That is exactly what I love seeing in a tennis match the most. The ability to place the ball anywhere on the court with consistency and power. Consistency comes first, I think.

This is somewhat off topic, but perhaps some relevance may be found.

I don't actually play tennis. I mean, I've played some mock matches with my brother and sister but neither of them actually play tennis. That was back when I was first getting interested in it and they were humoring me :p All I've done is watch tons and tons of tennis matches on YouTube, lots of videos at FYB, read books about it, listen to CD's about it, and practice on a wall by myself, as well as aiming for various odd objects. I suppose I'm an aspiring player. :?

Back to semi-on-topic, even though I've never played a real tennis match against a real tennis player, I understand the feeling of being pressed to counter a shot that, although not blazingly fast, but placed perfectly in a difficult area to return and heavy and fast enough to make it hard to set up the counter.

When I watch college level tennis players play, most of the time I'm surprised (less now) to see a huge amount of shots either going into the net or just plain out. I see less creative use of net play and shot speed variety. I just see power, power, power! And it's boring! :|

awesome comment...there is a huge difference from Ole Miss' #1 and Mississippi Valley State's...

A lot of guys can pump the serve. But you see very few aces compared to the pros and you know those guys are better returners. It's because pro servers are just much better at placement, variety and disguise.

+1 THIS!!! People don't realize that its more important to hit a heavy well placed ball about a foot from the baseline every time as opposed to hitting as fast as the can like twice in a row as it hits the service line

I found that It's hard concept to grasp for people who never faced someone point higher than them. They often associate hard hitting with one put away shot they slam per game and not consistently faster shot with average rally speed of xx.x mph, there when strokes start to fall appart for whoever is not out there hitting with equal or better partner every day for 6hrs per day, and pretty stroke turn to some pushed ball.

Goran ace story illustrate this the best. It looks easy looking from the sidelines...
