I have a feeling that Roger is safe

Somehow, something tells me that Novak won't be able to secure Weeks at No.1 record and surpass Roger in this race. AO 2021 contest is in question and Novak is shaky if he meets Thiem or Medvedev. Perhaps he loses his No.1 at the AO and will never be able to come back either due to corona or new emerging forces in tennis.

On the other hand, how long can Rafa defend RG? Only one slippage there in 2021 and there goes the chance to move to 21.

2021 will be very interesting...

I thought Novak was so far ahead with points he couldn’t lose number 1 for months? Points are confusing currently! Does Novak drop his 2,000 in January for AO as normal?

Neither Novak getting the weeks record, nor Nadal winning another RG jeopardises Federer in any way. Roger has been safe for years, safeguarded by complete and utter lack of younger ATGs to put the comparisons even roughly in the same ballpark. We are witnessing an unprecedented void in the top talent. In the final summation that hurdle cannot be overcome.

The Weeks record is done and dusted with the yesterday results. The only way that Djokovic don't reach #311 in early March is if they froze the rankings again.

Nadal basically needs to win the AO, the ATP Cup without Singles defeat, and a 1/4 in one more tournament Adelaide or Rotterdam for example.

How about Thiem, what if he wins today and wins AO? Or is it not possible for him no matter what?

If Djokovic loses a bit of his edge (which it looks like he has done), Nadal is now the favorite at EVERY Slam, not just the French Open. Would not be suprised in fact if he won all 4 Slams next year.

Nadal will still be able to win 8, 9 or 10 more titles between now and the end of his career.
And two of these titles will be, quite possibly, GS tournaments.

No. Djoker could lose first round at the 2021 AO and still keep his 2,000 points. Barring injury or Thiem winning Doha, Dubai and the AO (where he could gain 1200 points), Djoker passes Roger in March.

He actually gained 200 points at the YEC this week.

Thank you! Bit ridiculous Novak keeping the 2,000 from last year....

Rankings freeze temporarily hurt Novak, but in return the new COVID ranking rules are basically forcibly pushing him to the weeks at #1 record whether he even plays any tournaments or not. There's no chance (realistically) of him even losing the #1 ranking until Wimbledon, I think.

Yes. Its pretty much done and dusted that Novak gets the record in March as we head into the spring.

I think ATP already gifted the record to Novak by guaranteeing he keeps 2000 regardless of AO result

Roger is basically Uncle Adolf in the bunker right now, the allies are closing in, only question is whether they will take him alive (break his records while he's an active player).
And it turned out to be his Slavic enemy to the East who, despite losing the initial engagements, would grind him down through attrition and eventually crush him
