"I have to show why I am at No. 1"

Surprised he's putting such pressure on himself for the US Open. Of course, his results since RG have barely been those of a top 20 player (to be charitable), but still, I would have thought he'd have played the underdog card, like he's always done ("Roger is the favorite as he's now in his peak, no?"). Shows how much this (ie getting back to #1) means ro him, imho. Not sure the added pressure will help him in New York, though. Might be the opposite, in fact.

It's easy to see why he is # 1. The ranking looks back 12 months - I agree that Fed is the form player at the moment but he would have needed to play USO 2016, RG 2017 and the clay masters this year to get the points necessary to be #1 now (actually just one or two good results in any of those would do the job).

Rafa is the rightful # 1 right now but he is also right in saying that it is up to him to show he is # 1 at USO this year. If not and Roger performs better then he will be the rightful # 1.
It's so simple yet some Federer fanatics are in a tailspin !!

He's not as fraudulent a #1 as Murray...

It's about how one got there. Murray won Beijing, Shanghai, Vienna, Paris, and the World Tour Finals to take over the #1 ranking. Nadal made the 4th round of Wimbledon, the 3rd round of Canada, and the QF of Cincinnati to take over the #1 ranking.

In all fairness though, Nadal did also win a Slam, make another final and win 2 Masters in the first half of the season to help put himself in a position to become #1 just as Murray did last year.

I think it is important to be fair when talking to people with agendas. That way OTHER people watching us will figure out who is rational. :D

Gets tiring after a while though. Sometimes you just have to let it rip and give jerks a taste of their own medicine.

He has to perform great or in my opinion it's hard to justify number one ranking otherwise

The ranking doesn't need to be "justified".

What the Nadal is saying is repeating what Tio is repeating to try to get out of him the necessary motivation.

It is amazing and disheartening to see it still work.

Murray set the bar in the dirt so.......yeah no pressure. But if Fed wins USO or WTF and Nadal doesn't do much? Probably gets firgot as #1 like Russell winning NBA MVP over Wilt's 50 PPG.
