With Alcaraz, Sinner, Rune all withdrawn, the field at the Next Gen finals seems a bit less exciting than in previous years:

L. Musetti
J. Draper
B. Nakashima
J. Lehecka
C. Tseng
F. Passaro
D. Stricker
M. Arnaldi

Indeed, there doesn't seem to be a thread yet for the tournament even though it's about to start - or did I miss it?

Musetti & Draper are good, but do we think they'll rise to the heights of Alcaraz, Sinner, Tsitsipas & co? Are there any of the others we should get excited about?

I think Draper takes it. Very intrigued that Stricker made it, would like to see what he can do against the best in his peer group.

Don’t know why Stricker is anonymous to many here in this thread. Here’s a list of pros who know him all too well, shaking the winner’s hand at the net:

Cressy (2x)
Dutch boys TvR (2x) and BvdZ
Huesler
Karatsev
Nishioka
Seppi
Sock
Hurkacz
Albot
Cilic
Fucsovics

He really loves the indoor tournaments, winning two Challengers.

Draper is up first, another lefty who has won multiple Challenger titles indoors. This is a popcorn level match.

I think Draper can become a top player. Not sure about the rest, haven't watched most of them. Don't rate Musetti that highly, at least not as an all court player.

Stricker really stirs things up by beating Draper in the opening match.

Too bad that they didn't rejig the groups properly after Rune withdrew. As it is, both the highest-ranked players are in one group (Musetti and Draper) and with Stricker in that group, too, it's a group of death. The other group, on the other hand, is very much a group of life with both Passaro and Arnaldi in it, even though Arnaldi did push Nakashima to five sets today.

Another notch on the Stricker belt, taking down Draper in three successive tiebreaks. He plays a lot of those Russian roulette stanzas (18-12 across all levels) and handles them efficiently.

Five straight TBs won by Stricker. Should we change the nationality of tennis’ version of Russian roulette? The guy is nails in the extra frame.

@Meles said in 2017 the TB at 3-all would change the game. (n)

NextGen Finals was the first to play HawkEye exclusively.(y)

NextGen Finals was first to allow coaching on changeovers via microphone/headsets.(y)

NextGen Finals play on a court with singles lines only.(y)

NextGen Finals start with first 3 games of each set played with no changeover.(y)

NextGen Finals have only one sitting break per break after those first three games.(y)

Serve clock is reduced to 15 seconds after aces, DFs and unreturned serves(y)

What’s not to like with these innovations?

First group concludes with Nakashima and Lehecka through as expected.

So, Stricker winning the second group and so knocking out one of Draper and Musetti is the only surprise from the group stage.

Somewhat depleted field with the top three qualifiers not here, and it shows.

Stricker and Musetti are the only ones in the field eligible for next year's event (Draper was born 10 days before the cutoff), so Musetti might get another chance to make it out of the group stage, having failed to do so both this year and last.

feel like Alcaraz did his part by playing here last year even as he was emerging as a top player, would have been fun if Rune could have been the guy this year.
Assume he’s an alternate in Turin tho

Guessing Moose was just tired. He's played a good deal of tennis as of late. I'm just glad he didn't have any injury withdrawals. Maybe he is toughening up.

Lehecka revenged the loss to Stricker at the Halle qualies with a 4-set SF win. His opponent in the final is TBD next when unbeaten Nakashima takes on one-loss Draper.

Nakashima edges Draper in 4.

The RR match between Nakashima and Lehecka was a straight set win (1,3&2) for the San Diego native. Let’s hope Lehecka adjusts and we get a decent final.

Lehecka made the final without beating a top 100 opponent! Depleted field but also a lucky draw. If all eligible players entered, he’d have been the lowest ranked in the field.

This is the first time since 2017 that the final is a RR rematch. That was the first edition of NextGen Finals and Everybody Hyeon Chung Tonight was the theme, following up his RR2 beatdown (0,1&3) of Rublev with a 4-set final winning outcome.

Nakashima becomes the 1st American and 2nd non-European to win the event and did it without losing a match.

All previous winners except Chung ended up as top #10 on the main tour. Will Nakashima now follow the most recent examples?

Even Chung was probably headed to top 10 if he'd stayed healthy. I'm enjoying watching this crop of young Americans, they're fun to watch and all play well rounded games.
