Barty is currently having a great run at the Miami Open!

I like how she really mixes up her game with net play, drop shots/lobs, slices, chip returns, and a nice FH. She reminds me of a female version of Hewitt.

All that in a 5'5" package!

Agreed, she's a treat! Happy that she has entered the top 10 with this week's run.

Not an upset alert but Muchova's all-court game will give Serena fits in NYC.
McNally's serve-and-volley will put a lot of hardware in her trophy room. She was not quite enough (yet) for an in-form Serena.

Nice to see Townsend get some good results finally. I remember seeing her at Roland Garros in 2014 I think, and I honestly thought she was going to be the next big star on the WTA. Great hands, solid serve, easy power from the back, hopefully this is her breakout moment.

Taylor Townsend!

Ughhhh...I have seen her muddling in te pro circuit for the last several years, so nice to see her get the big win. What is interesting is, I have always thought she was too dogmatic in how she applied her game and didn't think outside the box. So in the past she wasn't unorthodox, but more awkward. She definitely changed it up against Halep.

Another good exmaple of unorthodox players is Caty McNally. What's interesting there for me is, I think unorthodox almost equates to an all-court player anymore, where the mainstream is the 90/10 baseline to other tatic player. I dunno. Maybe that's just me. Caty's S&V play was amazing to watch.

Its nice to see the different styles. Like I said on another post these girls can make a good living playing this way. But I highly doubt they can turn it into big tournament wins. Its just to hard to be consistent playing like this and winning day in day out. Unless you are really special.

Do you think we will see a renaissance S&V era?

I think a 2020's version of someone like Navratilova, with excellent net skills/touch in addition to a good serve, could do some serious damage on the current WTA tour. Martina was 9-9 lifetime against Graf, so I think she could hang with these current baseliners.

Just look at the success of Hsieh, who has the serve quality of a 4.0 rec male but manages to go deep in many WTA tournaments with her racket skills and court smarts. Give her a big serve and she's probably winning some majors...

Who is this idiot woman commentating the Townsend match?

J

WTF is Dick Vitale doing on my TV during a tennis match???

Clearly he'd call Coco Gauff a diaper dandy.

EDIT: Vitale mentioned he holds a college tennis tournament every year. I didn't know Vitale did that, or was a big tennis fan (though as a native New Yorker I'm not surprised he has interest in the U.S. Open).

I loved how Taylor Townsend played serve and volley against Simona Halep. Because she carries a little extra weight and can hit reasonably big, I think serve and volley is a good tactic for Townsend; playing long rallies from the baseline doesn't make sense for her. It probably won't work against the really big hitters, but it can work against most of the top WTA pros IMO.

I don’t know about her tennis, but you just know that Townsend really enjoys a good steak cut against the grain.

Tatjana Maria and Naomi Broady have nice one handed backhands.
Naomi has a God awful backhand that makes a right hand turn as contact is made with the ball. It's impossible to describe but difficult to forget.
She side swipes every backhand.
She's tall, rangy, good serve and can volley. She should have a decent doubles ranking but can't seem to rise above the Challenger level.

Did anyone get to see the match between Townsend and Andreescu? Seemed like it was competitive, and probably had some variety.

Great match between two girls that do things a bit differently. More volleys than you'll ever see in a ladies singles match for sure. Townsend gave it her all but she just couldn't match Andreescu's variety and power.

Could say the reverse for Bianca. Some awesome FH winners but she was missing a lot of BH's especially in that second set.
Both were making a lot of errors last night. Taylor was just making mistakes on crucial moments. I thought she was going to take the 3rd set but there was a moment in I think the 2nd game where it all just went downhill.
