Is luxilon ng really that good? I always use wilson, just seems all around good. I heard luxilon is very firm for gut, heard vs is amazing but durability isn't great compared to wilson, whats your thought?

I personally like the stiffer feeling of Lux over the others due to a bit more control. But the stiffness wasn’t any bit overbearing, the string was still Uber comfortable on the arm. I would definitely try it out if/when there is a sale!

Klip natural gut isn't bad at all...like most things, it's a matter of perspective. I've been fortunate to have used almost every set of natural gut out there (even the super-cheap sets from India!). While I hold Babolat VS and the old Wilson Nat Gut (which was made by Babolat before Wilson acquired Luxilon) in the highest regard, it only makes sense to use those top-end sets as full string beds...not only because of cost, but because that's where natural gut's real performance and benefits are realised. IMHO, using a VS set in a hybrid is a neutered experience. It's like ordering top-shelf liquor to make a Long Island Ice Tea...you could do it, but why would you?

However, if you're looking to add some of natural gut's qualities to a hybrid, sets from Klip, Pacific and Babolat's Tonic line are a great way to go. In my experience, using natural gut with any other type of string brings out more of companion string's benefits. Want more spin, more power, more comfort...add natural gut. When I was stringing for H***b**d way back in the 90's, the saying was "You can't go wrong with natural gut", and for the most part, it's still true today.

I assume you're referring to Zyex. Zyex is a very peculiar string: in the hand, it feels very much like a stiff poly, but when you string it, it has a huge amount of elongation...it just stretches and stretches. It's these qualities that make it so unique...it can pocket/cup the ball and slide like a poly string, but it also feels soft and has a ton of built-in power like natural gut. When working with it, you have to treat it like natural gut: if you crease it, nick it or pull too quickly, it will snap on you. A lot of failures also happen when trying it off...if you pull too hard, the knot will saw right through the string. Another downside when stringing Zyex is that it's hard to reproduce the same results from job to job...even when taking care to pre-stretch and prepare the string properly.

But, when you get it done right, nothing I've tried comes as close to natural gut as this does...this coming from a natural gut fanatic.

Sorry, I was referring to the Klip gut. For example, looking at customer reviews for the 16g coated and uncoated, you see some posts about the gut breaking while stringing. It does look like really old posts, so not sure if that still is true.

Ah, ok...same thing applies with taking the care to prep and string the Klip gut properly. One of the reasons Babolat, BDE & Wilson/Luxilon gut is so expensive is that these sets go through more intensive manufacturing processes and have special coatings applied to the string to make them more durable and uniform. Klip and Pacific have nice gut sets, but are nowhere manufactured like the ones I mentioned above, which makes them cheaper. If you go with a "natural" or un-coated set...these are even more fragile during the stringing process.

I broke a couple of sets of Klip on the stringer years ago. Been playing primarily Klip for the last several years without a problem. You can hit a bad batch of gut with any company. Anyone see Dimitrov break the strings in 4-5 racquets in a row? He then crushed a few frames.

I've used babolat and klip legend.
Babolat is slightly better, but its subtle, and not nearly worth the double or triple price tag of klip. Klip legend 17g is awesome. The 18g was even better. I only stopped using it as they became greedy and put their prices up 40% recently

You can string up a gut poly hybrid with Legend for the same price as a full bed of excel and get vastly superior playability and durability. Sure it may not feel as nice as premium gut but it does provide most of the performance. Best bang for your buck stringbed IMO.

Are people buying the uncoated? I'm tempted as all I have is Lux and VS (BT7).
I like the uncoated klip. Imho, it's plush but not mushy the way VS is.

Also don't like how grainy and oily the vs bt7 is. Never used Lux.

So I ordered more sets of Legend.
I've been trying to get my son to try something other than full bed poly. He's been playing with HyperG18 in a Pure Strike 16x19.

I wanted him to get away from the spin monster setup as well as find a setup that would be more arm friendly (for his future).

Legend/Proline2 @ 57/52 (with a good pre-stretch on the gut)

On his first outting, he hated it. Said everything went long.
I told him to aim lower. Flatten out his strokes and focus on finishing the stroke.
He tried it a few more times and seems to be grooving with it.

He entered a local tournament and I really like what I saw. He flattened out his FH but was still getting a ton of topspin. He seemed to be very comfortable going for the corners of the court and varying his pace and spin. His serves seems to have changed. I'm not sure how. It seems like the ball is a little slower and not as much spin, but I was finding it just as difficult to return. His opponents were having just as difficult a time as well. His touch shots and defensive shots seemed to have improved.

One thing though. When I was warming him up for his match, he pulled out his racquet and found the gut had snapped in the bag. Not sure how many hours he had. Maybe 6? Looking at the mains, they were notched pretty good. No fraying (except after it snapped). Good thing he was able to play his matches that day without any other issues. I had one other racquet strung up with this setup.

So now, he has 3 racquets strung up with the same setup in his bag. Gonna need a lot of sets if all he gets is 6hrs of play.

That was my issue too with Klip is that it more often than the Babs/Lux's snapped when I wasn't even using the racket. But since then I have switched to a full poly hybrid. Glad to see your son is enjoying the more arm friendlier setup though!

Natural gut of any make can snap. If you mis hit a shot, it weakens the string at grommet area , does not necessarily snap at that time, later you take out if bag, find string broken and wonder why as you forgot about the mis hit.
To help this issue, I found it very beneficial to apply a little lube ,I use tri flow in main string grommet openings. Does not take much, one little drop on a small micro brush and it takes care of a number of grommets. Try it as it will greatly reduce those unexpected snaps of string. Mis hits are tough on Nat gut and this does help. Only downside is you need to clean clamps really well once finished.I string a good amount of gut for me and others, this does work.

To analyse this thread a little deeper, i will provide 2 case studies here.

Case study 1
I would say it is a good deal to buy if you want 24 metres( 2 sets) of high performance non poly string ( 19.99 per set on promo now) .
But if you are looking to get 4,or more sets..... Then it is not worth paying 16 dollars more to get klip gut instead TF X1 biphase.
You can use the 16 dollars to buy another set of biphase (Buy 4 or more for $15.96 per set.)
Yup.

The best multi( fake natural gut) is still not as comfy as a grade b natural gut.

Case study 2

If you are a frequent user of TF HDX tour ( $19.95)... Please burn your wallet for klip gut. If would be nice if TW stocks the carton of HDX (i think it is 20 sets) then i would have a new price point to analyse further.

Again...

The best multi( fake natural gut) is still not as comfy as a grade b natural gut.

If you looked at the string, it was easy to see that it was ready to snap any second. I'm sure the fibers started to break like spiderman's web holding the ferry together. The gut mains were notched pretty badly. One hit during mini tennis would have snapped it.

I'm not understanding your point of switching to full poly hybrid? Do you mean a poly/poly (two different poly strings?)

main 2 or 3 snapped right in the middle of the racquet. It was due to wear and not a miss-hit.

I been using the Klip gut legend blk both 17g and 16g for years now. For the
money i been really pleased with it. I use it in a hybrid mains klip with yonex pro tour poly
Generally 56 to 58 for the mains and 50 to 52 for the crosses.

I too hoped on the deal they had!! Picked up 3 sets which will last me a long time. As i am
no longer a string breaker hehe. Getting old ... SUCKS !!

Yessir, using a shaped poly with a smooth round poly.

I've been using Klip Legend 16 for about 3 months now, hybrid with Solinco Outlast. I got some Lux Nat Gut and I broke in it half the time I've broken the Klip. I guess I get about 20 hours out of the Klip, got about 10 hours out of the Lux.

Traffic--we've compared notes about our sons in the past. My son use the Pure Strike as well with Hyper G 17G. I had my son hit with my racquet, which is heavier than his, mine has the gut hybrid, he absolutely destroys the ball, huge spin, huge power. Can't get him to bite and try it on his racquet, or he really should use my racquet,

I've been working on him for a while now. Not sure what got him to try it. Maybe talking with some of his tennis buddies got him thinking about trying different strings. His first time out with the gut/poly and he was like, "this sucks". No spin and the ball goes long. But now I see him with really nice strokes, the ball trajectory looks much better. He gets more pace on the ball and can really put spin when he wants to.

Maybe after a few months, I may try him on Legend 16. I like 17 and that's what I had in inventory. But since he likes the setup right now, I don't want to rock the boat too much.

But yeah, 6hrs of hard play. I'll be stringing more frequently and the supplies cost will go up. But I think it's a relatively small price to pay for a little more insurance on the health of his arm. When he is in college, maybe he will be good enough to cheap out and use S-gut/poly hybrid and still play well.

My playtest comparing Klip 16 NatGut vs. Monogut ZX 16 at 58
I string both at 58.

Klip NatGut seems to really fly long.
I really do not like the NatGut.
Less spin than ZX.
Ball just seems flatter.

And it goes long a lot.
Some balls hit the fence on the fly.
My flat serves are consistently going long with Gut
Does not happen with ZX.

My stroke has not changed in one day.

I'm not sure if I should string my NatGut at 63?
Seems ridiculous.

I think I am going to cut out the NatGut

ZX is so god damned fragile though.
One off-center hit, and it pops.

This sucks.

Klips powerful for sure. I strung mine at 55lbs but probably could have gone higher. TWU says that gut/poly makes the most spin, though i struggle to believe that. Hyper-G gives 10x easier spin.

There's a new string that you may find interesting called volkl v-square. Apparently its a spin monster that is quite soft

So this is full bed comparison?

Would think Klip mains and ZX cross could be super good.

You can't hit a ZX FH past the service line, LOL!

Guess who also hit most of their FHs into the service box? Every ATP player out there.
Try hitting against a former D2 player, and you also will see why the timing is so off that you hit balls short.

Against a 4.0, I am crushing everything long

Try a nat gut/poly hybrid. My son is getting just as much spin as with his poly. But he did need to make some adjustments to his strokes. Now he is really focused on a strong finish to his swing. Many of his rally balls land on the service line and kick past the baseline. But he is also able to control the depth and get really close to the corners. His touch shots have improved a lot too.

Avoiding Poly for arm health.
While TE is an overuse issue, I am playing it safe.
No poly
I play with Legend/Cream. The Cream is definitely softer than the Proline2 that is in my son's racquet.
I also string Velocity/Cream hybrid for a number of players at my club.

Some folks with history of TE can't tolerate any poly. But some are able to hit with a little bit of poly. But I've found certain racquets hurt my arm even with the same string setup.

I figure, there is enough string deflection with the Gut (or multi) to keep me in the safe zone.
