Kerber: the worst year-end No.1 ever?

Also Olympics final.

So out of these five big tournaments, Kerber was in 4 finals this year (Australian Open, Wimbledon, Olympics, US Open).

I don't think that's the worst achievement in the history of women tennis.

Obviously noone took the OP seriously.

How about devaluing Serena's results in 2015 because she barely had to play any top 10 players all year....

You don't want to go down that road! After watching the sport since '73, there have been plenty of instances where each great player had periods with little to no resistance! OTTH we all know eras where players like Martina, Chris, Steffi, Serena, Roger, Bjorn, McEnroe, & Nole owned a season or 3! A lot of it was they were superior, actually toying with their competition, but then the other side of the coin has them coasting with tour fairly weal and lackluster! For Martina, '83 & '84 were as great as any in the history of the game! Besides winning 6 majors in a row, she barely lost sets; serving up bagels and chopsticks! It was embarrassing for a while! Steffi had periods of just being at the top of her game, but then her coin has 3 sides; add the mediocrity of the WTA for a while plus Monica's stabbing changing tennis history! This era has had a little bit of both; great play and apathetic results from the tour! First Roger owned it from '04-07, intermittent greatness of Nadal in '08 & '13, with the rest going to Nole until now! Murray's trying to make an impression, but it would be short-lived and we all know it! The question is, who's the next great player and will Nole add a few more majors and Masters events to his record before totally giving it all up? :p ;)

In fact that's exactly my point. You can't devalue Kerber's achievements any more than Serena's last year. Or indeed Federers French Open after Soderling took out Nadal. You can always find a reason to pick at someone's results and by the way Murray has already made an impression this year whether he finishes number 1 or number 2 . His biggest mistake was to play Cincinnati straight after winning Wimbledon and the Olympics instead of taking a break. I believe fatigue was the main reason he lost the 5 setter to Nishikori at the Open.

I don't know if she is the worst, but her conversion rate in finals is poor. She played three tournaments post US-open (not counting Singapore), and she reached the QF of one, and crashed in the third round of the other two. Not very impressive for the world number one. She was also beaten quite badly by Gavrilova.

She's done well with her achievements in 2016, but I definitely don't see her repeating her success in 2017.

don´t like her behavior at the handshake when he lost yesterday and the olypics...that´s not classy.
serena teaches at ao how to spend respect to the winner.

and also don´t liked that he cried that he can´t move because hes is tired.....that match didn´t last 90 minutes.
thats a really bad attitude for a world number one....an i come from germany.

sure, she played a lot of matches this year but in the last match, der final...you can´t cry that you are tired.

But that means she's like the female version of Wawrinka and would anyone really complain (besides Djokovic fans) if he became #1? Not really. This is not directed specifically at you, but this idea that any loss is a bad loss for a world #1 is really only something that started because people like Serena, Federer, and Djokovic have been so good at rarely giving less than 100% at any tournament and winning most of them. And it also may have something to do with the "homogenization" era we're in which allows players to win with the same style almost anywhere.

But Kerber will never be Serena. She's very unlikely to ever really dominate like the 3 aforementioned players. So all in all, no matters what happens next year she's actually done a great job as #1 by winning the 2 majors she did and making the final of Singapore, the Olympics (which I don't think she got any points for), and Wimbledon. Losses to players like Gavrilova in minor tournaments really do nothing to hurt her claim as #1.

That's it, Kerber overplayed this season even when she was already #1 and didn't need to worry (I guess that's her work ethic). The results in top tournaments are the most important, and she's done well there - not much worse than Serena 2014 and better than Wozniacki 2011, obviously.

Cause tennis is an individual sport. Its the same with golf.
Its harder to rank team sports than individual ones. Especially since there's no ranking for the most popular team sport in the world like football. Tennis also has a lot of politics behind it. Every sport does.
Individual sports like boxing and MMA are all politics. You can be the best fighter in the world and if you can't get a contract with UFC or Don King won't let you fight his, "champion" then it doesn't matter at all. Tennis has none of that. I seriously could go win Wimbledon next year if I was good enough to do so. I could be the best fighter on earth, and to get a title shot or a UFC contract it would be more about lawyers and businessmen deciding if I would be allowed to succeed.

Kerber's 2017 record: 4-3.
Best she made is 1/8 in Brisbane&Sydney.
Worst start of a World No.1?
WTA is a joke.

It has its moments! The WTA's a lot more competitive than it has been since the 70's! I grew up loving them; their struggles, sponsorship hypocrisy (VS), & promotion/public relations! The repetitive Martina/Chris show got old for a while in the 80's, but Graf, Seles, Sanchez, & Sabatini came along to prop up the ratings with their power, beauty, & talent! Up until now we've judged the tour on who led the way as #1; now we're going to tear them down for being more competitive after beating the top player? IMO the tour was more a joke when the rankings were in flux due to injury, apathy, or outside interests kept the Williams from playing! Caroline Wozniaki was #1 for well over a year never winning a major, same for Safina & Jankovic! Henin's retirement & motherhood for Clijster didn't help them either! I think a Golden Age may be starting for them with a lot of talent blossoming here in the States and the world! :p ;)

She had a multi-Slam season in 2016, she shouldn't even be in the discussion, let it go.

If you compare Angie's performance between 2015 and 2016, she actually over achieved. 2 grand slam titles and Olympic silver medal is pretty impressive compared to 2016.
I think here in Australia she's been struggling for form and the pressure of defending her title and no1 ranking is probably something she needs to learn how to do.
