As Kevin says, sign of the times, unfortunately.

Kevin Anderson has revealed he received "death threats" after his first-round loss at Wimbledon on Monday.

The South African world number 25 told BBC World Service Sport that he had received threats from people who had bet on his match against Denis Istomin.

"It pretty much happens after every match regardless of the circumstances," the 30-year-old said.

"People who have bet on the match tend to take to social media and say very inappropriate things."

Anderson, who reached the fourth round of Wimbledon last year before losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic, said abuse on social media was commonplace.

"It's just something you have to deal with as a professional athlete who is in the limelight," added Anderson, who lost in five sets to Uzbekistan's Istomin.

"You can't obviously read too much into it, you let it run off your back. It would be nicer if you didn't [have to], but that's the reality of the world we live in."

Don't these people understand there is a 50/50 % chance of winning. Maybe Anderson should make some threats of his own.

Internet anonimity allows people to throw their frustrations at others without taking any responsibility, unfortunately . Most of them are just cowards (as we could see here, the worst bullies are cowards incapable to deal with reality).

In any case I hope that Kevin has a good security around him.

Bummed to have lost yesterday, but at least I had a ton of death threats on facebook and twitter to make me feel better about things...

Big Kev is a legend. I like how in his stride he takes this kind of crap.

This is the sad and pathetic downside of being a sportsperson in the public eye. Welcome to the age of social media!

I wonder if any of the top players get threats of this kind?

How much nicer is it here on bad days?

Do we really need betting on tennis matches and how is this conducive to the interests of the sport?

Very true.

And Anderson should go to the next players' council meeting and call for the players to not participate at those events sponsored by betting sites. The ATP is hypocritical in taking that money. Better to have some holes in the calendar than tacitly approve of it.

All those tournaments sponsored by @betathome , betfair, bet365 will bite the dust.

These players should just block unwanted social media. Sometimes it is plain crazy watching them respond to trolls on the Internet.

lol when I worked at a club that had a challenger event a few years ago, random European and South Asian men would call our shop phone during the day and ask what the scores were.

My 60 year old shop attendant, just one of the sweetest women you could meet, asked me if this tournament was a big deal because "so many men are calling asking to find out the scores", and I had to explain to her that they were finding out scores for betting.

May be from unhappy fed fans who are still haunted by the fact that Anderson let Novak off the hook at R4 in Wimbledon 2015.

They may be still upset that Anderson indirectly denied 18th slam for four fatherer :p

It happens a lot at challenger events (that is a 'paradise' for match fixing, by the way). Some of those matches are so fixed that I'm impressed how ATP hasn't made any move on it.

So right you are, shows what a fluke that WO win was for Nole. He was lucky that Kevin choked.
Just like we are unhappy with Nadal for letting Nole win this FO.:p:p:p:p:p

Wonder how many sportspeople get these but don't say anything? Anybody who gambles & cannot afford to lose what they are betting is a damn fool & only have themselves to blame. Whole industry is a cesspool-no different or better than drug dealers, getting people hooked & then bleeding them dry, only one is illegal & the other is allowed to advertise & have physical & online shops everywhere.

Angry betters. I saw people posting them and saying if he didn't lose such an easy match then he wouldn't get them.. Stupid logic and just idiots gambling far too much money. I gamble a bit (guess i'm scum Arcspace) but nothing to the point where i'd be sending threats if it lost.

I was five yards away from him and verdasco at Nottingham open last week and stood next to andersons wife for whole match as she sat on a park bench. Due to scheduling problems they were on an outside court that was literally a park court . All are millionaires but were humble friendly approachable and just really nice people.

To hear of death threats to Anderson is disgusting. It is outrageous and the police need to up their game frankly and hunt those scum bags down.
