Kyrgios once again with a dig at Carreno Busta

I can't stand when people do that. And I'm talking about Harrison, not Kyrgios.

PCB only got to the top 10 and made the WTF because of that 17 USO SF run. You can't use those accolades as reasons why we shouldn't be surprised those accolades exist. That's not how logic works.

It's sometimes less than the difference between te top 10 and top 15, and always less than the gap between 10 and 20.

In fact he was the #12 seed that tournament.

LOL. Crygios is home watching from his couch and running his mouth like always while Busta is into the 4th round, again, at the the USO, something he has never done. Oh and Busta was in the top 10 which is also something he has never done. Then he has the nerve to call Busta a dirtballer when hardcourt is his best surface.

This was my reading, so you've made that point well. Rothenberg's remarks just register surpise at his previous run, not sarcasm.

Krygios made his habitual grammar mistake. According to PCB's ATP biography he grew up playing on hardcourt until his teenage years, but his favourite surface is indeed clay.

If you cant stand Harrison here but are okay with Kyrgios's line of reasoning in his now deleted tweet, I think we should just leave logic aside altogether. Logic doesn't work that way either. And I don't even like red hat Ryan.

PCB was a top 40 player by Aug 2016, top 30 player by Nov 2016, top 20 player by March 2017, top 15 player by July 2017. Do you see a trend here? All that before USO 2017.

Nick's obviously an ***. There's no defending a stupid comment like that, everyone jumping on him for that is completely right.

Just wanted to point out that what Harrison said was stupid too. Rothenberg is a moron, but he didn't say anything wrong. Anyone who follows tennis knows the 17 USO was a ****show and there's a reason that was the only semi he's ever made.

Why was it stupid what harrison said?
Didn't you read the post which told you that carreno busta was top 15 in march 2017 before the us open semifinals? Saying busta was in the top 10 only because of the us open semifinals is false and the fact is, he did reach that semifinal of a slam, no matter the draw.

It is something kyrgios, for example, never managed to achieve at any slam.

Besides the Us open, Busta's best results are also the semifinals of indian wells and miami so saying he wouldn't be top 50 without clay is not just disrespectful but incredibly stupid from kyrgios' part.

You are welcome to your opinion of course, and no disrespect intended, but I don't see it that way (and yes, I do follow tennis avidly). You emphasized on reasoning and logic in your post I responded to, and right now your comment doesn't really echo any of that to me. Keeping in mind the ranking trend I mentioned, PCB was already a top 15 player by July 2017 before USO getting most of his points by playing on hard courts from Aug till March stretch. How is Harrison stupid? And how is Rothenberg right? If anything it should be less of a surprise given the trajectory PCB was on and his results on hard courts. Reaching semis, sure, he wasn't top 4 but is it really that big of a stretch like being claimed?

On top of that, a player doesn't determine who his opponent is going to be, fairly illogical bit that one but remains a fan favorite among TTWers. Like I said, willing to discuss further but then lets leave logic aside and stick with subjective takes and 'cupcake draws' rhetoric etc.

Someone needs to tell Nick the online troll look is not a good look. Mythbusters confirmed not all Spanish players are clay specialists (tho many are).

Yet another storm in a teacup. Rothenberg is paid to write about tennis and Krygios to play tennis. We alas are not paid.

I don’t understand Kyrgios’ comment. What does it mean? He has very few points on clay at the moment.

Or is he saying the year he made Top 10, he didn’t have enough points outside of clay to “even be close” to Top 50? That seems pretty unlikely.

PCB could rightly respond that, if the serve wasn’t part of the game, Kyrgios wouldn’t even be able to compete at Challengers, let alone be ranked “even close” to Top 50.

PCB made the semis because that was the most depleted field we'd ever seen. It's ridiculous to ignore that and pretend he just had this incredible week where all the work he'd done came together or whatever feel good story you want to spin.

He played 4 qualifier in a row to reach the quarters and then beat #29 seed Schwartzman to reach the semis before losing to #28 seed Anderson. It was not a quality tournament for him and we all know it. There's a reason he hasn't come close to sniffing another semi-final since. We don't need to pretend otherwise just for the sake of being nice.

Yeah, and lets all completely ignore his trajectory up until July of that year which is a big factor in this discussion, claim that subjective takes such as opponent across the net are somehow logical, and instead suggest I'm "spinning" it to make it a feel good story when all I have presented are facts. I think we are done here. Still no answer to how Harrison was wrong btw. Nice talk.

MeatTornado definitely has changed to focus of his argument from:

Now the focus is only on the low quality of his semi-final at the US Open. But, he of course doesn't respond to the fact that PCB was Top 15 just a few weeks before the US Open.

Unless his point is simply that PCB would have finished JUST OUTSIDE of qualifying for the WTF. If that is all he's trying to say, then he's right. In all likelihood, without the US Open semis (just a Round of 16), PCB probably would have only reached around Top10 that year.

Completely unwarranted from Nick. If he had taken a swipe at the 4 qualifiers Busta faced to make the SF, he would have had a point.

Perhaps Nick mistook Ruud for Busta ?

And why ignore the downward trajectory since? That has more to do with the "yes, that happened" quote than anything else. If had kept up even a semblance of his pace at the time it wouldn't be a funny thing to look back on now, which it clearly is.

Jack Sock made his first career Masters SF that year, but we still consider his Paris win a "that happened" moment too, because he became an incredibly forgettable player afterwards.
