Laver Cup needs a format change

So, they already announced a while ago that the Laver cup is going to stick with the Europe vs. World format for this year. Europe has won all 5 editions of the Laver cup. And even more than prior years, this Europe vs. World stuff is NOT going to work well. It was already lopsided enough with Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic on 1 team. Now with the addition of Alcaraz it's going to be actually ludicrous how lopsided the event will be.

What ideas do you guys have to make the Laver cup more interesting? If it weren't for Fed returning this year I doubt anyone would care about it. So, once Fed retires (either this year or next year) there will be little to no redeeming qualities to the event. What would you guys do to do improve it?

When Fed retires, Laver cup would also retire.

They should... EUrope is too dominant specially since JMDP got injured and then retired. He was the only one that could beat the top European players. And there's no new talent of that caliber to replace him. Schwartzman is getting worse by the minute as well.

But Kyrgios is in the world team and he thinks he is better than anyone.

Laver cup; the rubbish that is an ATP sanctioned event. Even counted h2h retroactively. What nonsense.
It should never have been endorsed by the ATP. Just goes to show how influential Federer is behind the scenes. Even the ATP Cup is a bit of an odd one.

That’s because Delpo is of European descent.

Kyrgios problem is that in his team, he’s surrounded by people who don’t take the Laver Cup seriously.
Really? How can anyone be more indifferent than Kyrgios? Is that possible?

Kyrgios's incentive to play in the Laver Cup is simply to play his idol, Rafa Nadal. When Rafa was replaced by Thiem for their upcoming match because Rafa was suffering from his wrist, Kyrgios was gutted, almost in tears. McEnroe was very cross and asked for a rule change. Kyrgios then said he was injured and pulled out of the match with Thiem.

Team World captain John McEnroe fumed after Nick Kyrgios was forced to pull out of his match with Dominic Thiem with injury.

Kyrgios was due to face Rafael Nadal in the second match of the day but the Spaniard pulled out with a hand injury.

But following the first match which saw John Isner and Jack Sock beat Roger Federer and Stefanos Tsitsipas, McEnroe announced Kyrgios will not be able to play.

He said: “Unfortunately Nick is not ready to go. We are going to be going into conference. Stay tuned.”

They should choose teams based on "odds and evens" rankings. For example players ranked 1, 3, 5, etc on one team and 2, 4, 6, etc. on the other. "Odds vs Evens" doesn't sound as cool as Europe vs The World, but it would make the matches much closer and more entertaining

First of all, if Fed returns but does nothing else on the tour, to me it's must more evidence of a fake expo. I have huge respect for Laver, Borg, others, but I think the whole thing is turning into a joke.

Fed already semi retired but still there is laver cup. I think anyone won't say no to 250 k for a weekend.

The problem is the fans may not pay the crazy prices.

For now they paid knowing they'd see the Big 3 alot -- it's a glorified exhibition.

Are people going to pay those crazy prices for Djokovic alone?

Because otherwise, we're going to see Federer retired from tour, but playing 1 match at Laver Cup to drive demand, and it'll more evident than ever just what Laver Cup is

(That said I watch it and like it; but it's just an exhibition & a pay day -- and I'm fine with that -- but I don't think it's sustainable)

Precisely

And I'll watch -- cause Borg, Mac, Federer, Laver all in one place is FUN.

But that's all it is.

It's become a sad situation with this premise. Somehow, either they didn't think it out, or they meant it to be this way. I didn't watch much last year, and won't this year. Either they change the premise or scrap it.

Its kind of like WWE
People know its fake and yet enjoy it

I assume they enjoy it since they spend big bucks to go and attend..

I'd have a pool of players and then just draw lots - the skill of the captains would then be in having to rapidly get some team spirit going. No one cares about the geography - you could just have red and blue teams - and it would add a new level of interest if viewers didn't know who was going to be on which side beforehand.

I'd like to see different captains every year - recreate some old rivalries!

I don't think the competition is necessarily doomed - it's a hugely enjoyable event to attend - but the format does need a refresh.

Yeah making it like the current NBA All Star game where two captains pick players regardless of geography makes sense
