Federer gives up the Olympics because of his family?
Roger Federer could miss the Olympic Games, reports the Swiss newspaper Blick

The International Olympic Committee announced that there will be no foreign audiences in Tokyo, and that is an official decision, and because of that, Federer could miss the Olympic Games. Federer does not want to be separated from his wife Mirka and four children, who cannot be with him in Japan, so the Swiss newspaper Blick is convinced that Roger will not play at the Olympic Games.

The family is always with the Swiss at every tournament and he simply cannot do without them, writes Blick.

Roger could not take his wife and children with him to Melbourne, so he missed the Australian Open and that speaks volumes about how close the Federer family is. If they could not be in Melbourne for a week or two, they will hardly be able to be separated for the five weeks that Federer would have to spend in Tokyo.

It is impossible for Federer to take the family with him to Japan, since the official decision has already been made and there will be no exceptions. He will make a final decision soon. The Olympic Games start on July 23 and last until August 8.

The athletes will come to Tokyo two weeks before the start of the Olympics.

The original article in Blick has a bit more info, including the fact Roger has told friends he won't travel to Japan without Mirka and the kids, "it's not a hard decision for me."

Looks as if an Olympic singles title will forever elude him. He will be 44 by the time Paris comes around.

He'll just have to console himself with the doubles gold medal he and Stan won for Switzerland back in 2008.

44 will be at Roland Garros, no?

It seems like the #1 candidate for Nadals final stand.

It's five weeks, not a "couple" of weeks. Of course it's no big deal for Nadal or Djokovic, who routinely spend weeks and months away from their wives (and in Djoker's case, his kids). In 2019, Jelena wasn't at any of the slams. So no biggie for them. Fed's a different type of course.

How is it 5 weeks?

This is not how it was meant to be. I wonder how many British fans that were rooting for Murray in their Olympics final are now wishing Fed would have won. That’s why you always root for your favorite player over your country. If Messi had a World Cup final in the USA and against the USA. You already know I’m rocking the Messi Jersey. Also I don’t know why Del Potro made Fed play like 30 games in the final set of their match in the olympics.

That shows how low certain Fed fans can sink to. Yucks.

so the main thrust of this seems to be that this Swiss newspaper "is convinced that Roger will not play at the Olympic Games" merely on the basis that they have noticed that "the family is always with the Swiss at every tournament" so they assume that this must be the case with the Olympics as well. Not based on any official statement from Federer himself, but sprinkled with some hearsay from an unnamed 'friend'.

doesn't really seem like news to me until he himself actually suggests anything one way or the other.
