Federer unsure about Olympics; will reassess after Wimbledon.

Roger Federer is still not sure whether he will compete at the Tokyo Olympics, saying Saturday that he and his team plan to “reassess the situation after Wimbledon.”
Speaking to reporters in a video conference from the All England Club before the grass-court Grand Slam tournament begins Monday, Federer said that how things go over the coming fortnight will affect his plans for the next couple of months.

“Obviously, if I play really good here or really bad, I think it has an impact on how everything might look for the summer,” he said. “Still, my feeling is I would like to go to the Olympics. I would like to play as many tournaments as possible. But I think we decided now let’s just get through Wimbledon, sit down as a team, and then decide where we go from there.”

“In previous years, it was definitely easier,” Federer said. “At the moment, things are not as simple as in the past. With age, you have to be more selective. You can’t play it all.”

if he wins wimbledon, he will pass, i am sure. because he has to win the US open and he has to rest his body to do that. and after he wins US open, he will put all other guys out of reach of catching him

He should enter if his bod can handle it. The Os used to produce odd winners/finalists and given the current pandemonium (the not-so-distant) history is likely to repeat itself.

Maybe he doesn't feel strongly about winning a singles Olympic gold (I still insist that tennis along with other big moneymakers shouldn't be part of the Olympics at all), but it's all but certain this will be his last chance and he shouldn't waste it.

Uniqlo. He will be at the Olympics. Even if it is just to go there, play a match and then withdraw.

Will he pull out of Wimbledon after a few rounds to save himself for the Olympics?
Likely he will do that, especially when he sees the great EastBourne finalist Sonego, or the great champion of the grass court in Mallorca Medvedev or the great Queen's champion Berrettini waiting ahead.

What are they playing on in the Olympics, some sort of hard court?

The surface is DecoTurf - which is actually the old USO surface and I believe used in Cincinnati/Shanghai. Tbh I don’t get the fuss about skipping the Olympics, it’s basically the same tournament as Cincy (except for the travel/quarantine)

How interesting! Same surface speed as when Fed was winning 5 in a row or the slower one they use now?

Olympics are garbage, let some other scrub win it to underscore how unimportant it is in the sport of tennis. Tennis has its pinnacles--Slams.

I wonder if Fed was thinking of pulling the cord on Wimby after his fall in Halle, but then his team talked him down.
I think this Wimbledon will be very telling for his future. If he makes a deep run, then I think he'll devise a training block to get ready for the US Open and then really target Wimby 2022 for his last chance at a slam and most likely retirement.
If he struggles at Wimby and they can't figure out a clear reason why (injury), it might turn next year into a good bye tour instead of a try to get another slam.

Exactly. His Halle presser conveyed the obvious: they were discussing for 2 hours after losing to FAA, basically convincing him not to call it a day.

His body language in the Wimbledon presser does not convey positivity. In his heart, I don't think Fed is convinced about his form/mental strength. At this level, this is all that matters. About time to pull the curtain.

Hindsight is 20-20, I suppose, but Fed should NOT have quit RG midway. It was bone headed and placed a boatload of expectations on himself.

We still get great tennis out of Fed. The reality is father time. For a while it has been hard to see great tennis out of him for a whole tournament. Tough to continue to play great day in and day out (amazing he and the other big 2 seem to do it so easliy.). Clearly the last few years, we've seen more off days, but even his off days were good enough to sneak deep into tourneys.

Unfortunately, his attempts this year have gone from having good and bad days, to good and bad sets. You seem him play a great set, hitting aggressively, serving well only to have a clunker second 2nd.

Like many Fed fans, I hope he proves me wrong.

Uniqlo is probably pressuring him to play in Japan. He will have to come up with an injury or fatigue excuse once Wimbledon is over. I doubt he wants to go play in Japan with the quarantines and other rules. I’m not even sure if he is going to play much once the grass season is over. I think there is a good chance he will skip the entire US and Asia hard court season and just play the indoor tournaments in Europe in the Fall.

Euro fall season is canceled. Or at least Basel is.

When Fed says "I don't know" at this point in his career, it means "no." He said after his third round match at RG, "I don't know if I'll even play the next round against Berrettini" and then he withdrew the next morning. I think the next time we see him is the USO or Laver Cup. Maybe not even the USO.
