Maria Sharapova deserves her 5th GRAND SLAM title! - SHE IS THAT GOOD!

I noticed some people are upset that with the loss of Serena Williams today, Maria Sharapova is a lock to win RG 2014. "Maria with 5 slams? OH NO!" They say.

But how is Maria not deserving of 5 slams? HINGIS has 5 slams. Hingis. Who won 3 of her 5 in one of the weakest years in WTA history (1997) at 16. Then Hingis promptly crashed out and retired early as a result of not being able to win any majors in the strong power era. And you're telling me this quitter deserves 5 but not Maria?

Maria has been at the top of this goddamned sport since 2004. That's 10 years of amazing consistency. She's won a WTA title for 12 years in a row, not even Serena has pulled that off. Not to mention her courageous comeback after being injured, people thought she'd never play top level tennis again.

Sharapova is simply one of the most dedicated, best tennis players this sport has ever seen. She is deserving of her status as the 4th best/greatest player since the 00s. She is better than Hingis. She is better than Clijsters.

No, she is not.

Here's hoping Pironkova takes out the Shrieker.

Sharapova is not a lock to win the FO....probably the clear favorite now. I still think Halep, Stosur and some others can take her down.

Isn't Maria a lock for every tournament Serena loses early in or does not compete in?

She should have at least 5 Slams by now, right?

I love Masha and I don't think it's a question whether she "deserves" it or not, she simply has to DO it. Unfortunately, I sense she will lose early too and a real mug walks away with the title.

Wait, does the WTA stink so bad now ? I have been a little out of touch. Serena is out and Shriekapova becomes the favorite ? Where are the other players ?
Ok, I know Li Na lost, Azarenka is not playing , Schiavone ? too old ?

Schiavone?! She's 33 and has lost in the first round 5 of the last 6 slams.

Maria got some lucky breaks today, esp. the last few balls in the last game of the first set. Pironkova played great at times, but wasn't mentally strong and patient enough to follow through with her great strategy of short+long balls which annoyed Sharapova immensely.

OK, you convinced me. I think she deserves 5 slams.

Actually, I have always been a Sharapova fan. She is very professional about the game and works hard. I don't like the screeching but I can over look it. She can be a bit of drama queen at times but all in all she keeps her focus on the tennis and has gotten a lot out of a 1 dimensional game. Great 2 HBH.

The great Masha S showing once again what a champion she is. Can't wait for her to knock that obnoxious disrespectful quitter Dingis down the list. :p

I wish you'd waited till the final had been played because you know that upsets can happen and this would all look a bit silly if she loses, but yeah - hopefully she can get to 5 and beyond...

Even if Sharapova wins this year's RG she still won't be ranked higher than Hingis so it won't really make much difference.

Not really anything against Sharapova but Halep deserves this title fair and square. It's about time someone finally mentions her.

Good one. :)

Why wouldn't she be ranked ahead of the quitter, might I ask? Is it because the quitter racked up a bunch of weeks at Number 1 that she didn't deserve, in years that she didn't win slams? Sorry but Maria's longevity and consistency, her constant fight and never-give-up attitude, coming back from shoulder injury, winning the career slam, it makes her greater than Dingdongis when she reaches her 5th slam title. :) She's just a better player too.

How does Halep "deserve" the title? She has to win it first. She might lose to Sloane tomorrow. A good solid top player but can she compete with the big girls for the big titles? I don't know, but she might not have to the way draws are opening up to be fair!

I made this thread about Sharapova deserving her 5th slam title because once Serena lost it was a foregone conclusion that she would. Every point played from the second Serena hit that UE on MP against Muguruza was a mere formality. :)

If Sharapova reaches 6 slams, wins another 10+ titles, spends another 2 years at #1 and has at least 2 YE#1 then I will place her above Hingis. Until that happens, nothing doing I'm afraid.

Shouldn't you wait for her to actually beat Muguruza? :)

Maria does not deserve it and she is not "that good". She never won GS titles in two consecutive years, and not just because of Serena.

Sharapova's slam count should have been way more than 4 by now. There are a few slam finals that I thought she just threw away and didn't play her best at all. Wimbledon against Kvitova and AO against Vika comes to mind.

"Deserves"??? Deserves ain't got nothin' to do with it. Here at the FO...you have to WIN it. To hell with "Deserves".

True-- but the very moment Serena lost her match, i've said Sharapova could see the finish line and would be relentless---as in her recent match. I cannot see anyone stopping her.

I'm shocked that YOU would be giving any credit at all to Sugarpova. Unstoppable? How flattering. You usually just state how lucky she is just to win a slam.

He's been saying a similar thing in a couple of other threads as well. I suspect he's just trying to jinx her.

given her performance on clay the last few years she fully deserves to win another french...wierdly clay has somehow become her best surface. Would anyone have said 5 years ago that the french would become Maria's best slam? Credit to her though...she has improved on clay over the last decade.

How upsetting that someone with as much grace and finesse as a wildebeest on roller skates is the favorite.

sugarp, in a greatly diminished field that lacks her nemesis serena, li na, and azarenka, is the overwhelming favorite to take home her 2nd FO prize.
