Men cheering for women

I was at the semifinals of the So Cal open last week, and noticed how most men were cheering wildly for Ivanovic over Azarenka. There is something wrong about men with a cup of beer and a tummy protruding a foot shouting "Go Ana" just because she looks thin and cute. Do these men have no shame and no ability to be unbiased? Do they think Ana would ever give them a second look? Some of them even had wives and children around them. Are the wives not bothered by this?

Same can be said about post-menopausal women with swiss/spanish flag face-paint gushing over Nadal and Federer in their matches.

My girlfriend will see movies to see hotter male actors and I will do the vice versa. My girlfriend not huge on tennis will normally wind up rooting for the more attractive player in the match I am watching and I do the same with women's tennis a good portion of the time if I don't know whose playing.

I mean I know Ana Ivanovic would never give me the time of day and wouldn't bother. I don't care if my girlfriend looks at the "hot" celeberties and vice versa. I find my girlfriend attractive, and as long as I'm not going around trying to bed other people and vice versa she or I don't care. Pretty sure their wives would do the same if a guy like Fernando Verdasco took his shirt off on court.

Wives are often amused by it. "You're so pathetic" is liable to be heard muttered. It allows the wives to feel superior when their mates behave in such a superficial manner. I tend to root for Bartoli, so my wife has to find some other way --- and she generally does.

We aren't talking about Martina vs. Chrissy (though Martina has looked amazing recently.)

Vika is no uggo. If you like them athletic looking, she'd be your pick over the shrinking Ana.

Let's not forget that all other things being equal, there is a tendency in this country to root for the underdog, particularly when two foreigners (and Eastern Europe seems to be as foreign as it gets for many Americans) are going at it. Ivanovic and nearly everyone else is an underdog against Azarenka.

At least there is a clear claim to supremacy of the two players. Here, Ana was losing. And she has no Slams, unlike Vica.

Yeah these fat guys were cheering for Ana's forehand.

Ana was losing, and these guys were even cheering for Vika's unforced errors. That is why it bothered me. If they had been unbiased, I wouldn't have cared or noticed.

I factored that in, and am pretty sure it was because she is cute. Azarenka is coming back from injuries and not the clear overdog. In the end, Stosur won the tournament.

Let me get this straight......you willingly attended and paid money to watch a WTA event? And it was to watch tennis and not just look at hot, athletic chicks?

This is one complisult you don't want to pay Azarenka: "You don't need looks to earn support, what with your trophies and all."

Please, like girls don't root for Ryan Lochte or Christiano Ronaldo?

It's just more obvious when guys do it because (a) there are so many more male sports fans, and (b) while sports tend make a man's physique more masculine and attractive, they don't always make a woman's physique more feminine, so a girl who is both good at sports with a pretty face and feminine physique is rare and a fan favorite.

If you ask Ana if she'd rather have a quiet crowd or a bunch of guys that find her hot rooting her on, I guarantee you she'd choose the latter.

And who cares if she doesn't find a cheering guy attractive? That's just stupid. Since the dawn of time men have always been 'visual', where women are run by emotions.

And just so you know: I find her hot. I'm 5'10" 173lbs, all hockey muscle. And I don't give a crap what my wife thinks if I cheer for a female player or not.

I remember that in the same tournament years ago (in its better days), there was a drunk guy in a night match who kept cheering loudly, shouting "Go Sharapova" after every point, and was soon joined by a small crowd around him. Problem was that it was Nicole Vaidisova who was playing!

On a similar note, I had read about a disabled man (and his wife) who were the biggest fans of Patty Schneider whenever she played in the US. He asked her to stay with them, attended all her matches, and made all her arrangements. I don't know, the first thought that came to me was "creep." Maybe I am wrong, but don't you find it creepy?

Yes I agree that players would rather have someone cheering for them. At the same time, the other player must be troubled, because clearly the cheering was not because of Davis Cup pride or better technique or something like that. It is like telling Azarenka she is not hot.

Myself, I would prefer to watch Carla Suarez Navarro for her 1 handed BH, as I did at IW this year.

Perhaps they were cheering against Azarenka because of the space-time continuum-shattering noises she makes. In any case, if sex appeal gets them into the seats, so be it. Something's gotta pay the rent.

She wasn't very noisy that day.

Ana is a skinny chick yes...athletic no.
Vika is more athletic just not as thin as Ana.
Thankfully the funner player to watch and better athlete Stosur won. Sam Rocks!!!

Indeed. Instead of being critical about those cheering guys (who aren't doing anything wrong or incorrect) maybe you should look at how you're assuming those things about people you don't even know.

Also even if they are doing it just because Ivanovic is pretty, how is that wrong? Why do you have a problem with it?

EDIT: I noticed you mentioned Ivanovic being thin. Do you really think that's why they're cheering for her? Because her being that thin is not what makes her attractive. In fact she would look better imo with just a little more fat on her. It's not like Azarenka is fat, lol.

Azarenka was wearing like a prison shirt or hospital gown last week. It was not pleasing to the eye.

While Ivanovich looked sharp in blue.

The problem is the while women may objectify hot guys such as the Ryans Lochte and Gosling in 2 areas (sports, celebrity culture), men objectify women EVERY EFFING DAY, in every field of endeavor. It's seemingly impossible in this culture for a woman to simply do whatever she wants to do without some guy commenting on her looks.

It exists in absolutely all cultures. That is the world you have been born onto. Behold Mother Nature; and deal with it.

:lol::lol: That is hilarious, I would've joined in just for the hilarity of it.

So strong women intimidate men. That is what I thought.

So this was a troll thread to confirm your man-hating prejudice, that's what we thought.

Beautiful women are far more intimidating than strong women.

Get your common sense out of this troll thread.

No one's saying objectifying people on their looks is a good thing. But if you're here to discuss gender issues and not objectifying in tennis or sports, then might I suggest you find a more appropriate forum?

Of course, you haven't seen the way middle aged women behave in a theater showing one of the Twilight movies.

Of course to those women I like conveying a message that Grandpa Munster gives in the link below.

I'd cheer for a baboon if it was playing against Azarenka.

It would have nothing to do with how she looks either; rather I cant stand her screeching and refuse to support it.

I think men like attractive young women and women like attractive young guys. Isn't this a revelation?

Unless the guys was cheering in an inappropriate way such as using suggestive comments, I don't have a problem with it. Same with women cheering for a good looking guy. My wife likes Federer and part of it is because of his looks. No big deal - that's life in the big city.

It doesn't bother me even when the women hoot and holler when an ATP player changes his shirt. It is good natured and I don't see an issue with it.

That is a one time thing. If that was the basis for cheering after every point, then it is a problem.

This is a pretty rational and reasonable thing to do. Everybody likes good-looking women.

When I've talked with women about this kind of issue, they say look at men and they're just not as obvious about it as the guys are.

I was at La Costa watching that same match. Traffic on the 5 south was awful but I still made it when Vika was up 3-0 in the first. Where were you sitting?

Ha...I remember several times going to Cincy and all of the women from Louisville cheering for Rafter, Edberg and Mark P. among others quite loudly based on their looks. So if men ogle the female players, it's creepy, but if women do it, it's ok?
