Yep, barely squeaked by. That match was a lot closer than the score line indicates. Nadal mugged it up and Nico mugged it slightly more. Nadal is not going to beat a player as good as Ferrer right now. Nadal even taking a set from him would be an accomplishment.

mission accomplishment

Actually I do. I don't see anyway for Nadal to beat Ferrer right now. He is better than Nadal is at the moment. Nadal will be fortunate to win a set, or make it competitive at all.

nadal competed fairly well in my opinion...now if he could just work on his game

Players who already got 2 titles this season: Gasquet, Ferrer, Djoko and Nadal. Yeahhh this is gonna be another "Djoko/Nadal sweep everything" season! ( my favorite kind:))

when has there ever been a season like that?

On another note, how long before clarky shows up saying that Nadal played like a mug and would have been destroyed if Ferrer had turned up?

If Ferrer plays well then Nadal has no chance anyway. Well, maybe Nadal would have a slight chance if Ferrer were to disappear from planet earth. That is the only way Nadal would win this match tonight.

ferrer has just entered the solar system on his way to mars...he's still much more grounded than you

?

2011. At least until USO. Rafa/Novak made every final until USO (pretty much) and won every title as well (with the exception of Cincy that went to Murray). Also 2012 before grass with AO and all the events on red clay. Rafa/Novak is my favorite rivalry.

Man! Nadal is feeling it!

Up 5-0 now again I ask:

Oh Clarky, where art thou???

I'm here. I just don't follow the match threads here when Nadal plays, and rarely ever post in them during the matches, either.

Good win for Nadal, but Ferrer was really, really abysmal out there tonight. He was an error machine.

The most positive signs for me were that Rafa is back. He's playing aggressive tennis and he's hitting that backhand VERY well. To me that's very important because if his backhand isn't working then when he comes up against Djokovic he is going to get beat.

Movement was great, not really much to criticise at all really, looking forward to IW now, to see how he goes on a HC.

If he can make it to the semi's at IW he'll rack up his 600th career win, becoming one of only 20 players in history to do so.

Clarky must be pissed off at this.

Of course it'll be

"ferrer played like a mug, otherwise he'd have won 6-0 6-0"

Why on earth would I be mad that my favorite player just won a title? You are right that Ferrer played like crap, but it was still a decent win for Nadal anyway.

Thank goodness we haven't lost you, now can you please tell me, how do you think Nadal played? Was he crap, average or bad?

That's the happiest I've seen Rafa look in ages. I really hope he can have a good year.

I really hope so too. His performance today showed that he's still got it. It must be a huge confidence boost after being out of competition for so long.

I wonder how many winners he hit today...it seemed like he was pulling them out one after another.

I guess so yeah, though it wasn't a very even split of titles.

When have you ever been happy when Nadal won? He won RG last year and all you did was talk how he played like a mug. You saying this was a decent win is earth shattering though

Are stats anywhere available?
Winners and unforced errors are not covered in the Atp sites' stats.

It is time for you to give up this stale act Clarky.:) You were wrong, just admit it and move forward.

I'm not acting. I did admit that this was a decent win for Nadal tonight. That doesn't mean Ferrer played well, though because he didn't.

my counts:
Nadal - 17 winners(9 fh, 8 bh)
Ferrer - 9 winners(4 fh, 3 bh, 1 overhead, 1 ace)

didn't count errors.
Nadal usually has a lot more fh winners than bh, he was hitting his bh pretty great in this match.

Very disappointed by Daveed's performance. He has looked pretty average this year. He was lucky to reach semis at AO, lost sets vs Fog and Nalbandian on clay. Although he is a fighter but we don't see the same fighting spirit from him against the 3 big boys. But take nothing away from Rafa. Great performance by him, was really surprised how well he played. Haven't seen him hitting his backhand this well since AO 2009, great pace and depth, was a treat to watch. He was really aggressive which is a good thing since he is no longer that fast. Hope he keeps it up during the European clay court season.

His shots are pretty much back but his movement still needs to improve. Although he moved lot better compared to last 2 tournaments but still not at 2012 level, has lot of problems when stretched to his forehand side but I guess he will improve it by MC. This win should give a lot of confidence to him. Should be an interesting clay season ahead. Also I hope he plays Indian Wells. VAMOS!

Ferrer should retire after that mug of a performance. At least Almugro made it close. What a disgrace to the game this match was.

Nadal was playing great. It all looks like a Nadal - Djokovic shown again on clay this time. It could go either way.

Great win. Even though Ferrer didn't play great can't take anything away from Nadal.

Still plenty of time until RG to improve. As we seen though at AO the gap between Ferrer and Djokovic is massive so can't get carried away as more than likely will have to beat him to win RG.

I am far more positive about his chances now than a few weeks ago, I never imagined these types of performances watching him lose to Zeballos.

"Indian Wells is one of my favorite tournaments and I want to keep competing because the knee is holding up and my heart says that I can do it, and compete is what I want to do now," Nadal said

so i guess he is coming back for indian wells

I didn't see the match. I'm not surprised so much that Nadal won but more the scoreline.

2 games? That's just pathetic. Ferrer should be embarrassed.

Have to agree, for the BO3 match it's like this:

-Conceding more than 2 games - terrible performance (just unacceptable).

-Conceding 2 games - decent performance

-Conceding one game - good performance.

-Double bagel - very good performance.

-Two golden sets - excellent performance.

Nadal goes 12-1 in 2013, winning his 38th career title on clay (and 52nd overall), and like a champion, makes up for his Zeballos loss (not that it was bad, two tiebreak sets and a 6-4 set in only his FOURTH match back). And Nadal does it in style, dropping only 2 games against Ferrer. It's similar to Nadal's victory in the final of Monte Carlo 2010 (where he dropped just a single game against Verdasco).

And Nadal has reached 3 consecutive finals in his first three tournaments back after a 7-month lay-off.
And Nadal has won 2 of those titles, and if Nadal continues with this form on clay, Nadal might build up a LONG winning streak record on clay again (his record is 81- he is currently on 9, but if he wins Barcelona, Monte Carlo, Rome, Madrid and Roland Garros, that puts him on 39, and if he plays a similar schedule in 2014, Nadal can get his 82nd consecutive win on clay in the final of Roland Garros 2014).
And Nadal is still only 26, ready to take Roland Garros and Wimbledon back-to-back to match Borg's 3 channel slams and win his 13th slam, just one away from tying Sampras.

It's all over folks. Nadal is back. No more freebies for Djokovic/Murray/federer. :p

Ferrer AFRAID of Nadal ?

Did Ferrer's Fear of Nadal play a big role in this match ? Like Mike Tyson Vs Leon Sphinx ?

I just saw the match, and just like I thought, Ferrer just like Almagro stood zero chance of winning a match against Nadal. Anyone who actually thought differently was kidding themselves, Nadal chews these guys up and spit them out all the time. I was actually quite generous in that I said collectively between them, they could take a set.

Ferrer could barely wins games. And I was just laughing when they said that Nadal just beat a top 4 player and spanish number one, because that in the real world is simply not the truth. Nadal is the real top four player and his just in third tournament destroyed Ferrer.

He was moving great, great depth on his shots. I though the backhand was solid and very penetrating, and he shows some great imagination during some points. Things are certainly clicking. Once a champion, always a champion.

I can't wait for IW. The gang is all back together again!!!!!

Novak will embarrass your hero at IW and from that moment on, will continue to dominate him and the tour for years.

LONG LIVE THE NOVAK DJOKOVIC ERA!
