FSU will hire Memphis HC Mike Norvell to lead the Seminoles in 2020. He went 38-15 in four years in his first job as a HC and got them in as the non-Power 5 representatives in the New Years bowls this year. His experience as an assistant included one year at Pittsburgh followed by four years under Todd Graham at Arizona State.

This is a great hire

As a Clemson fan, I think we match up better with OSU but both they and LSU are outstanding teams. It’s hard to go undefeated.

The Committee became Vulcan overnight, rewarding LSU for that emphatic beatdown of Georgia. Logical.

Crazy schedule change this year with the SFs on a Saturday night (12/28), two and a half weeks before the national championship.

Peach Bowl: LSU vs Oklahoma

Fiesta Bowl: Ohio State vs Clemson

Unless Oklahoma pulls off two upsets, this will be only the second (and consecutive) undefeated national champion in the playoff era.

I hate Bama but number 12?

As a side note, I think Nate Stanley might end up being the best pro quarterback out of this draft. True, he can’t hit the broadside of a barn for Iowa, but he has a great arm and is built like Rothlesberger. I’m betting a team takes a chance on him and teaches him the position.

Is it possible to have a program like OSU, LSU, or Alabama without under-the-table payments to the players? I've heard so many stories from former college players, and about USC under Pete Carroll. Ninety percent of OSU's second-string players could start for Cal.

Happens everywhere. Some are just better and care more about it. You mention Cal. I’ve become a familiar fan by marriage, as my wife and her entire family are alumns. They’re great in the ancillary sports but stink in the revenue sports (football and basketball). Do they recruit smarter but less athletic athletes? Nope. They’re graduation rates are near the worst in the nation, going back to 2003.

Can’t blame it on academics, as Stanford excels in the class and on the field. Same goes for comparable schools like Duke, UVA, Notre Dame, UCLA, Michigan, etc.. Other programs just care more and put money and resources into it. I played at Va Tech in the early to mid 90s and our facilities were much nicer than Cal’s today. Oregon and USC blow them away.

Cal is like the LA Chargers of college football. I’ve been to home games against USC, Oregon and Washington and every game was minimum 50% opposing fans. When they played Tennessee in 2007, a co-worker and UT alumn said Memorial Stadium was 60-65% Vols fans. Cal won that game, if memory serves.

That’s right here in Orlando’s Citrus Bowl at Camping World Stadium on New Year’s Day. We also get Notre Dame vs Iowa State as a warmup on Playoff Saturday.

My Gophers get Auburn. Just hope they don't get butt whooped like Purdue did against them last year. That was embarrassing.

Cal has greatly upgraded its athletic facilities and is working on helping athletes compete academically. Professors don't give athletes a pass as they do at other universities. Your perception regarding Cal fans being outnumbered seems to be distorted by beer and bias clouding your mind. Attendance can be low in lean years, but Cal fans always greatly outnumber opponent fans.

I was at the Tennessee game and Cal fans dominated the Tennessee fans in every respect. Your co-worker may have been confused because he was sitting in the section reserved for Tennessee fans.

No.12 Cal tops Tennessee 45-31

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — California scored one for the West Coast with a redemptive win over Tennessee.

Though both teams struggled on defense, Cal’s offensive creativity and athleticism were too much for its SEC foes. The win also should quiet some of those Pac-10 detractors who cited Cal’s 35-18 blowout loss in Knoxville last year as a prime example of the conference’s shortcomings outside top-ranked Southern California.

As the clock wound down in the final minutes, the sellout crowd at Memorial Stadium jubilantly chanted “Pac-10 football!” at the departing Tennessee fans.

The 72,516 fans at Memorial Stadium did their best to provide a homefield advantage resembling Neyland Stadium’s edge, packing Strawberry Canyon well before kickoff and easily outshouting the 10,000-plus Tennessee fans on the south end.

Probably beer but not bias, as I pull for Cal with my wife and family at these games. :)

I was at the Cal vs USC game a couple of years ago and that game was easily >50% USC fans. The crowd, including my wife's family even commented on it, my sister-in-law being married to a USC grad. Same for the Cal/Oregon game I attended-if not 50/50 if was 55/45. It's not a knock on Cal. Like I said, some fans and programs care more and put more resources into certain sports. I teach at a UC and have visited many of the campuses. I'm not joking when I say the high level high school programs in Texas, Florida, Georgia have comparable facilities to some of the schools. Heck, I know it's an FCS school but my high school football stadium in VA was larger and nicer than that of UC Davis. Even former Cal coaches have bemoaned the facilities. I can't say it as fact but I'm also pretty sure Cal isn't the shining city on a hill regarding academics for athletes while Stanford, Notre Dame, Duke and UVA students are railroaded though. You can always major in sociology. :)

The Bay Area is just not big on college sports. There's a lot to do besides attending sporting events, and the Giants, 49ers, and Warriors get most of the attention, followed by the Raiders, A's and Sharks. Even when Stanford has top teams, they have trouble with attendance.

Stanford coddles its athletes and you basically need to self-destruct not to graduate. As you know, the entire U.C. system is having budget problems. I am very familiar with the Cal and UCLA campuses, and there isn't much room for or interest in new athletic facilities. Cal has upgraded the basketball and football venues. I don't see UCLA tearing down the aging Pauley Pavilion anytime soon.

It's hard to compete with the likes of Oregon with its sugar daddy Phil Knight. Sports programs like Alabama, Notre Dame, Duke, and UVA are the only show in their towns. Alabama and Notre Dame are almost professional programs.

I agree completely and honestly, outside of USC football and UCLA basketball, the entire state isn't big on the money sports like many parts of the country. I LOVE college football and basketball, far more than pro sports and that's one of the biggest things I miss living in California.

The UC's have never been big on paying the big $$ to attract coaches or build cathedral-like stadiums and that's probably a good thing. Oregon is probably the closest to a big SEC/Big 10/ACC atmosphere on the west coast. It's going to be interesting to see how paying college athletes impacts the old ways.

Gotta get this thread cranking...kickoff for the first SF is less than an hour from now.

LSU vs Oklahoma may be closer than originally projected...Jalen Hurts’ experience in that building will help OU and CEH’s sore hamstring may take away from the LSU attack.

The Clemson vs Ohio State follows and that’s a hard one to call. Big Game Lawrence hasn’t seen a defense like OSU this year but the Buckeye defense hasn’t played as strong a QB/RB tandem as Lawrence/Etienne except in practice.

OU answers on their third possession, punching into the EZ on a short run after a perfect bomb from Hurts to Lamb to the two.

7-7

So much for a close game. Burrow has 4 TD passes (three to Jefferson), 28-7. Hurts just threw a pick and LSU starts on OU’s side of the field.

Another Burrow TD pass and it’s 49-a minute before halftime.

I’m thinking Coach O holds Burrow out of the second half or a large chunk of it.

Why is OU allowed to be in the playoffs? Just skip them and put the next best team in.
LSU beat all the teams that could play them tougher...Georgia, Bama, Auburn and Florida. One of them could keep it closer but they all lost another game besides to LSU.

No, they lost twice too.
It really should be Oregon. Serves em right for scheduling Auburn instead of Southern Utah. And for not coming all the way back against Arizona State, like Oklahoma did against Baylor. Iowa State was a 2 point conversion away from keeping Oklahoma out.

Clemson getting whalloped in the first quarter. This could get LSU ugly here if they can't turn it around. Losing our best receiver on a freak play doesn't help.

The game swung on two plays:

1. Shoestring tackle to save another TD gallop by Dobbins.

2 Horrible incomplete pass rule that negated the OSU scoop and score.

Horrible news that LSU’s OC Steve Ensminger lost his 30-year-old daughter-in-law in a small plane crash on the way to Atlanta for the game.

I thought those were two key plays as well. The irony of the first one is that my brother-in-law and I always joke that you never see Tanner Muse from the front because he is always chasing someone from behind.

The 2nd play, the NCAA rules are ambiguous:

"Secures control of a live ball in flight before the ball touches the ground, and touches the ground in bounds with any part of his body, and then maintains control of the ball long enough to enable him to perform an act common to the game, i.e., long enough to pitch or hand the ball, advance it, avoid or ward off an opponent, etc."

The only interpretation I'm guessing was made was that he did not ward off the opponent? Live I thought it was incomplete. In slow motion it looked like a catch. They use slow motion to determine if a foot was in bounds so I'm not sure why they wouldn't use that in this case as well. I thought all the other calls that went against OSU were correct including the dropped pass in the end zone, targeting of Trevor and the roughing the kicker call.

Agree with u on the calls. The pass fumble call was tight but I also think he didn’t maintain control. The targeting call was obvious for me. All credit to Clemson because a lot of teams get spooked and pack it in after a start like that. Trevor Law is cool as a cucumber.

Having said that, the beating I watched LSU dish out has me worried for anyone playing them...
