New Angell: ASL3!

Because not everyone follows the Angell mega thread.

Here is the NEW Angell ASL3

Some say it looks girly, but white and blue doesn't look girly to me. Sounds like a more comfortable Pure Drive from what I get from the info on their website and color choice.

Does appear to be "a more comfortable Pure Drive".

Should be quicker through the air with the thinner beam.

Not the best looking Angell IMHO, but not bad either.
I'd probably go with a black over grip to put a bit of hair on it :)

Wonder how it's positioned against the TC100 series?
I known the TC100 is customisable, but I can see it targeting a similar player group (of which I'm one).

Dig white rackets, the blue is just meh though. Certainly an interesting offering from Angell and definitely a smart move to take on the 100sqin big power crowd.

I’ll let you know once i hit with it and everyone follows the mega thread :D
I don’t, not anymore. It is just too big. Useful info is lost amongst all the noise.

I also think that non-customizable Angell frames should have their dedicated thread where people interested in the frame can easily access specific information to the model.

Nothing against the mega thread, it is just too big and a couple days away from the forum results in many pages to read to get back up to date.

That being said, I can’t wait to read your impressions on that frame. Looks like a frame I will be able to recommend to many of my students. Who doesn’t like big power and touch/comfort? Looks like another fine Angell frame. (y)

How does it compare to the TC100 Pro? Different mold?

I wonder if Angell is biting off more than they can chew and moving away from their initial business model...

Still, this is intriguing.

Edit: Hm, it looks lighter and less SW than most "tweener" frames. And the paint job tells me it's marketed towards women. I wonder what the strung SW will be.

I wonder what the strung SW will be.
It comes with advertised unstrung swing weight of 285. Given that it is 100 sq inch and 16x19, will be close to 30 points for full bed 16 gauge poly strings (from my personal experience with TC 100 and other similar frames). That comes to final strung swing weight of around 315 or so. Fairly light, relatively off course.

I couldn’t agree more.

It’s like an encyclopaedia without an index.

If I want to read about this new frame then it makes no sense to bury it amongst hundreds of pages of unrelated information.

I mean I love the Mega thread and the dedication to Angell rackets that it represents...just can’t find what I need in there.

remove the handle weights from a TC100 and that is about what you get, I am preferring my TC100's at about 315-317 grams and 4-5 pts HL, would be a bit more HL buy I use 15g gut/poly

I think instead of this frame specs, Paul should consider to create a TC100 with a 18x20 frame in order to balance the control of well known 16x19 beast.
It could be the PERFECT frame for my specs of choice...

Yes for sure the TC100 in a more closed pattern would be a good edition to the range for those who can handle the heft especially in the 63RA. I guess this new frame will appeal to a wider audience & keep the bank manager happy.

Specs for the ASL3 don't suit me but i like the cosmetic.

Not 285g, but 295g unstrung. So, strung weight will be around 11 oz.

Beam width is not listed, but somewhere I read it as 21mm in the hoop, tapering to 23mm at the handle.

It will be good if they release a tour version with 310g unstrung weight.

He was talking about the SW (285) not the static weight

The SW will be c315 strung which is not far off the "norm" for most tweeners. The idea is that you gain the power and spin by swinging faster and combining that with the stiffer frame.

Having enquired i've ascertained that the ASL has more in common with the TC100 line than the K7 line. That, combined with the 66RA (with handle), and the 21mm-23mm tapered beam, tells me that this is based on the TC100 70RA. The siloxane addition has enabled a lower RA rating and a little lower SW. For those of us like me who thought the TC100 (V1) was, in 70RA format, a little stiffer feeling than we'd like, and a little less maneoverable than we'd like, the ASL may just be about right. But reports from those who have had the benefit of a hit would be appreciated!

PS: I don't think Angell has made too many ooutright bad decisions in terms of frames - i currently play the Slazenger Pro Braided release - i think this might be a very interesting racquet. The paint job could be better though. :)

I would be interesting comparing the new Wilson Clash (regular version) and the ASL3. The tennisnerd guy seems to like the clash and is soon reviewing the ASL3.

I want to try out a more light and powerfull racquet (kind of an arm friendly Pure Drive). If I can't connect with it my wife will get it, problem is that she likes the clash color better so I guess the ASL3 is not too girly looking :)

Cheers, Toby

You should try the Clash if that's what you're looking for. I think it fits the bill IME.

I decided for the TC100 v3, and this is the most powerfull racquet I ever played, rock steady, love it. I still have a bit of adjustment time on my forehand (too powerfull) but everything else is fine. I think I will try out the Clash Tour once it is available for demo in my region.

It’s funny that “more comfortable Pure Drive” seems to be a goal of every manufacturer.
While I’d appreciate a more comfy Pure Drive I’d also like a better controlled one.

Which one is more powerfull; ASL3 or v3 TC100? I would appreciate a comparison also on other aspects between these two if possible, thanks...

I think manufacturers are on to something. I used PD for the longest time, never had issues with control. Could I use more control? Sure. But what stick can't use a little bit more of everything? I did however most definitely feel it afterwards so comfort was the most I wanted out of it. For me, the lure of a comfortable Pure Drive is more than that of a control-oriented Pure Drive.

Any other thoughts on this frame? I have a Prince Textreme Beast 100 which is a great value tweener racquet, but have found that it lacks control.

In regards to the earlier question on colors, I believe the blue / silver shown above is still the only option.

I am also considering the ASL 3. But not sure I want to spend 150 euros without knowing more about it.......Maybe someone here might be able to let me know if it might be for me or not....?

Currently I play with a "Volkl V-Sense V1 Pro", unstrung 305 grams (although my kitchen scale suggest it weights 302 grams), and beam 23mm/20mm/23mm, swingweight 317. Stiffness is rated at 66. It plays really nicely and is very easy to swing with. The feel is not stiff nor soft. It actually "feels" really good. Only thing is that I really have to swing quite hard to get the ball deep continously. If I relax even a little, the ball ends up short. I like that I can play aggressively but it would help to have a bit more power in those situations where you are really stretched. On volleys it also feels unstable, although that is a weak part of my game. But, I have been looking for something with just a bit more power and stability.....
I did try leadtape but did not work for me.

So in order to get more power, I tried several tweeners (300 grams, unstrung), Pure Aero, Dunlop Revo CV 3.0, Yonex DR 100 etc, and they all seem to have lots of power but I loose control even though I string with Poly strings at around 24 kg. I can't hit "slow" and I really need to be able to swing freely as otherwise it messes up my game too much, especially playing a match.

I have also tried a few 98 inch racquets around 305 grams, unstrung. Every time I try a new 98 inch racquet, it then feels just a bit too heavy and cumbersome for me. I had Pure Strike 98, Yonex DR 98, Yonex Vcore 98......and they are fine hitting form the baseline, but given my level, they are just a bit too heavy and it feels I hit just a little bit late when playing a match.

I also tried Wilson Clash 100 (295 grams) but really did not like it. Rocket launcher for me and above all, it felt unpredictable.

Having now tried so many racquets, I am learning that:

- I don't like thick beams (like in tweeners 23mm/26mm/23mm
- I don't like the feel of too stiff racquets. Stiffness of 68-70 is too stiff for me. I loose the "feel" completely
- I need a racquet with swingweight around 315 - 322
- I prefer 100 in2 to 98 in2 racquets. Not sure why but those tiny "2 in2" make a difference but at the least for me, I seem to hit more clean shots with 100 in2.

So basically, looking for a racquet around 295 - 305 grams (unstrung" with a frame 21mm - 23mm but not thicker.....and stiffness around 64-66......

Looking on all racquets for sale on Tennis Warehouse, I can't seem to find a racquet around 300 grams that is not too stiff or that has a swing weight of max 322. I really hate the feeling of the Pure Aeros etc and every time I touch these tweeners, I have to hold back in order to keep the ball in. I hit with a fair amount of topspin but the stiffness just seem to take away all control and feel.

I have read some really good user comments about the Angell ASL 3. What are your thoughts about this racquet, based on my rather long story above.....? If I would buy the ASL 3, how should I pimp it in order to keep the swingweight around 322 max and perhaps get it up to 300-305 grams (unstrung) ?

Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Why not go for an Angell TC100 ? The TC series are Angells best performing racquets according to Paul.

Thanks for the comment.

The TC 100 is an option, 300 grams, but I am not convinced that either stiffness options are ideal. 63 is a bit soft and 70 is a bit stiff,at the least on paper.

Therefore the ASL 3 with stiffness 66 sounds about right. My Volkl has 66 and it feels pretty nice. I just want something with a tiny bit more power potential.

dont overthink the stiffness, theTC100 RA63 plays SOLID

I want to also state this the stiffness on the TC series is unstrung so drop it by 4 and that is the strung stiffness so 70 RA is really 66 RA.

The TC100 in either RA is fantastic. The 63 RA is not noodly at all and quite solid. The 70RA really is around 66RA once the pallet/grip is on and strung (RA on custom is before the handle is on so hairpin). I have three with ordered spec 310g/7HL and they’re great

Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I did not really understand the part with pallet/grip.....?
So stiffness is 70 but becomes around 66 when pallet/grip is on, and then strung of course.......?

I played with the Pure Strike 98 which has around 70 or 71 stiffness and Tennis Warehouse rates it at 67 stiffness when strung. Still, the Pure Strike 98 felt pretty stiff for me.
That is why I am a bit cautious about another racquet around stiffness 70. But perhaps the TC100 with its thinner beam would not feel as stiff....?

Changing subject a little: Has anyone played with both the ASL 3 and the TC100 (300 grams) ? They seem quite similar although ASL 3 has 1 mm thicker frame.
I would assume they play quite similarly. Any thoughts?

Yes, the custom Angel line RA is quoted based on the stiffness of the hairpin. This is without a handle/pallet/grip. Once those are added, RA drops a 2-3 pts then once strung another 2 pts. The TC100 is an extremely comfortable racquet miles away from the PS (and i have tried the p17 and the newest one and both are harsh)

ASL3 is also comfortable, however plays with a bit more of a springy immediate response that gives more pop. For me personally i much preferred the response of the TC100

Hm.... By the sound of it seems like TC100 has a bit more control and feel.....? I like the sound of that.

I don't know too much about racquets but what I have read about my Volkl Sense V1 pro, is that it has great feel and ball "stays on strings" quite long.

When I hit with it, it sure does feel sweet. I just want a bit more power and I would be really happy.

Guess I need to go for the TC100.

Thanks again for your replies, and of course, merry Christmas as well :)

ASL2 is a more direct comparison to the Blade IMO (I switched from V7 to ASL2). The ASL3 likely has more free power, swings easier, has less control and equivalent comfort but a different feel/response than the Blade.
