Next NON Federer/Nadal slam???

OK, I'm sure the chances of anyone else besides these 2 winning any major tournaments is less than likely for the next couple years correct?

Who is gonna be the next player to win a major that is not either of these 2 players, and do you realistically see it happening this year or the next?

Nalby is always right there in all the GS. he´s in the need for little luck against fed and, eventually Nadal. But he is able to do it.
At least Nalby is the one with more chances. Maybe Ljubo?

I suppose Nalbandian and Ljubicic have the best chance, but both are notorious chokers in Grand Slams. Blake is there, but he is only realistic chance is at the US Open and someone else would have to beat Federer for him. There are two great players still on tour, Agassi and Safin, but both are question marks. Hewitt could do it if he got back in form and someone else beat Federer.

So basically it's going to look like this:

Australian Open: Federer
French Open: Nadal
Wimbledon: Federer
US Open: Federer
Australian Open: Federer
French Open: Nadal
Wimbledon: Federer

etc...the only question mark there for me is next year's French. Federer can certainly win it, if he's figured out how to play Nadal by then.

i think Nadal can win USOpen or AO next year, and Federer can win FO...

only bandy can win a GS and beat Nadal or Federer at final or semi

Blake . Maybe at the USopen. But Federer will be the obvious big threat with Nadal (but Blake leada Nadal H2H). Aggasi is getting to the end of his tennis days while Roddick can't seem to find his form for his tennis. Nalbandian is also a threat. But win Federer is on top of his game the only one who can take him is Nadal

Ljubo will not win over Fed or Nadal; but Nadal vs Nalbandian is still 0-0 now so we can only speculate what would be the outcome; Nalbandian has his chances, IMO.
I'd love to see Nalby defeat Nadal in a GS final ...
But I guess that would only happen if Fed does not participate :)

I can see Karlovic winning Wimbledon :)

Yeah, sounds more like a wish than a real sight, but if I had to pick anyone to beat Federer on grass, it would be Karlovic, definitely. :D

Interesting question...

I agree that unfortunately Ljubicic is a choker in big matches (unless it's DC) at GS. His 1st serve stops working when he needs it the most, and he's blasting aces and winners all the time in R128 against a #97 player.

Blake...maybe at USO...nothing new there, but as someone said, only if he isn't forced to face Fed. So that's kinda not a big possibility.

My wish would be Safin winning another GS. I'm somehow suspecting Nalbandian has been ruining his chances more and more by losing against Fed lately, but still...he didn't choke at TMC.

Actually, we're all speculating about "old" players. It seems to me that the dynamic duo  Fed&Rafa will be taking home slam trophies for another few years...and who can predict which young player will be on the rise in a few years time!? I wouldn't go there.
C'mon 4 years ago Fed was losing from Ancic on grass...who could've predicted such domination then!?

Nadal will not be at any major finals except the French. Unless they come up with a way to slow down grass and asphalt. But he could win the French for the next ten years.

I see something like this over the next 3 years:

2006

Australian Open: Federer
French Open: Nadal
Wimbledon: Federer
U.S Open: Federer

2007

Australian Open: Nadal
French Open: Nadal
Wimbledon: Federer
U.S Open: Federer

2008

Australian Open: Federer
French Open: Nadal
Wimbledon: Federer
U.S Open: Nadal

The next non Nadal/Federer slam winner might be come in 2009, or maybe not.

I think that the Aussy Open would be the most exciting showdown, especially if the roof was closed due to rain. Both players could really go at it on a relatively neutral surface. I've heard that if the roof is closed, it's the advantage to the power players, which both Nadal and Federer put tremendous effort into their shots.

I think Nalbandian has a chance at the Austalian Open, he got close before choking the finals away to Baghdatis, one of these days he's bound to get lucky and have his opponent choke while he's choking and pull through to a final, and then anything can happen there.

If Hewitt's form is back for real then he has a chance at Wimbledon and the US Open if someone can take down Federer, I also have a feeling he'll take an Aussie Open home before his career his done especially if he makes another inspired run like last year.

Next year I think a darkhorse at the French could be Gasquet if he's healthy, he made the finals of Hamburg last year and of course beat Federer at Mante Carlo which is closer to the French Open court. This is all assuming he's healthy and his form for the months leading in. He could also be a darkhorse at the US Open after seeing him take down Ljubicic and barely lose to a red-hot Ginepri there on his run to the round of 16.

Guys like Ljubicic/Karlovic/etc. could put together a miracle run at Wimbledon or the US Open with some nice serving and get to the final, mostly the US Open since Federer has Wimbledon locked up.

Almagro??? Depending on how he matures in the next year he may be a factor at the Aussie Open and at the French.

Blake can beat almost anyone when he's hot but can also lose if he's off his game fairly easily. If he's hot the only people who really stand a chance on hard courts are Federer and Hewitt so if he keeps his head screwed on he could make a run at the US Open.

Also someone like Baghdatis could rise up out of nowhere and make it to a final, and when the final comes they have as good a chance as anybody to take it.

I often wonder how many people on this board actually play tennis, when I hear about things being a lock or so and so being unbeatable. If you pay attention, it can really be an education to listen to some of the players in their post match interviews. Any pro player, has a chance of beating any other player in the world. Obviously the chance and likelihood increases as one goes higher up the rankings, but there is a real chance there for everyone, because these guys can play tennis, well. All the players know and believe this, which is why you see immense disappointment from players when they lose, even when they are big underdogs. Players, justifiably, think and believe they have a chance of beating anyone. Federer, Nadal and the other top players also know this, which is why you see a sense of relief when they win. They know everyone out there is gunning for them and are probably going to play loose and more relaxed without the pressure of expectation from others. Look at Federer, he struggled with someone ranked in the top 500 in Dubai earlier this year. He almost went down and could have lost that match. If you look at post match interviews you will see that none of the players appear too over confident, because they know that at any time, they can be beaten. Just one slip up or average performance, and they could be out of a tournament, which is why they are so appreciative when they win things, especially majors.

When I listen to commentators and fans sometimes, it leaves me with the impression that people don't fully understand or appreciate how difficult it is to do what Federer and Nadal are doing. Maybe it is because they make it look easy. I think the other players are all too aware though, and are looking to crash the party.

Players, at the end of the day, are not machines that perform with the reliability one can expect from a computer. They are flesh and blood, and can falter at any moment, as we saw with Federer on Sunday and Nadal in the first set. It is only when they are retired that they can look back on their careers without fear and doubt.

So to answer the question, the next non Federer/Nadal slam winner, can occur at any time. We won't know when, until it happens.

federer chokes when he is almost making a record (ie french, winning all four slams) so i think 2007 wimbledon he will lose to ancic because the borg five wimby record is on the line

So, wait, 3 grand slams a year for Fed...saying he retires early in his career, at the tender age of 30...that´s 3*6=18 more grand slams for Fed! 7+18=25 grand slams total in his career!! Better than Graf!!!

Get real.:(

I agree to an extent. When I posted this topic discussion, I didn't intend for people to be predicting the winners of actual slams for the next 2 or 3 years. Obviously, lots of things can happen, and those all depend on draws/injuries, etc.

BUT, it is unheard of for 2 MALE players, in a game with such depth these days, to be dominating the field the way Federer and Nadal are, and there is no way they can keep it up forever, especially Federer. I mean, Federer is only capable of losing to one guy it appears in the last 6 months. Reaching the final of every tournament is getting a bit predictable, and annoying at the same time.

Also, to those who think Nadal has a better chance of winning the US Open over the Australian are crazy. The US Open in 05 played extremely fast for a hard court, and the Aussie Open is slow, with high bounces for a rebound ace court. Unlike the US Open, I think at this point, Nadal might be a slight favorite over Federer at the Australian Open.

on TTC when they did the roddick "no strings" show, he was talking about how he just wants to make it fun and not make it all about winning. when players start talking like that, you know its over. the downward spiral started a long time ago. maybe you were on a space mission, but i heard they have the best satellite tv reception up there....

I agree with this in principle. But if I were betting a million dollars on who's gonna win Wimbledon, guess who I got my money on? Who is your darkhorse pick and are you willing to put money on it?

You get real. Did I ever say Federer was going to continue that until age 30?? Let's look into the past:

AO: Agassi
FO: Ferrero
Wimby: Federer
USO: Roddick
AO: Federer
FO: Gaudio
Wimby: Federer
USO: Federer
AO: Safin
FO: Nadal
Wimby: Federer
USO: Federer
AO: Federer
FO: Nadal

Agassi's Slam winning days are coming to an end, Ferrero is out, Gaudio is out, Roddick is out, Safin is out. Who does that leave? Federer will not lose to anyone but Nadal and possibly Nalbandian and Safin if they are on Cloud 9. This will continue for as long as Federer is healthy and no new superstars come onto the stage.

That is a very big if. Nadal wasn't even top 50 at beginning of '05. Look where he is after 1 1/2 year. New stars are always emerging. Who knows who will be challenging Federer in '07.

Thats a bit misleading though. Nadal was always ranked a bit lower before last year than he should have been, due to the fact he had to keep skipping the majority of the clay court seasons in 03 and in 04 due to injuries. He was always considered a tough player, and his first non-injury season he wound up at #2.
