Is Federer really over the glandular fever that afflicted him in Australia? Mario Ancic, the Croatian, was out for almost a year with the illness and perhaps its effects have remained longer in the Federer system than he hoped. He looks extremely healthy but this is an invigorating climate. He intends to play an extra week on clay this year to prepare himself for the French Open but one worries if he might be trying too hard to win the one grand-slam title that has eluded him.

BACK TO MY COMMENTS
I'm not huge for excuses, but i seriously question whether federer should even be out there. i'm thinking his chances of winning the FO based on last summer's form is about 5-10% and now it must be approx. 0%, so why not just shut it down until wimbledon preparation?... and of course, many other explanations/suggestions for roger's poor play, but at an absolute minimum it looks like he has poor energy and concentration right now.

^^^ If you have mono and are diagnosed with it, you will sit home and heal. If you are diagnosed but do not have it anymore you would try to play in order to get in shape as fast as possible. So if he really got over it he should play and try to get in shape phisically. Now what effect will this have on his confidence levels and on others seeing him being beatable, that remains to be seen. All in all, very bad situation to be in - you seem like you are giving excuses to public but then you continue on playing ..
