Novak celebration

Not every celebration has to be the same. Jumping or lying in the ground are always done. The more subdued celebration can only be done by few who have been winning slam after slam. It shows how focused he is. I don't see it as underappreciation of the title or underestimate effort. More to do with a despise for the crowd. You should celebrate with the ones you love. Family.

Yes. His celebration was great for that reason alone. Not wanting to acknowledge the crowd. H acknowledged his maker, and his family. In the end that's who matter.

Of course there is also a downside to this. I'd say his embracing of this role is the reason why Lendl is criminally underrated in greatness debates
I do agree with you that Lendl was so underrated. He never showed any emotions and it was a different time. People called him all kinda names at that time. Don't forget Czechoslovakia was a communist country.

Even when I think about Navratilova who was one of great players ever. She would be crucified for being gay at that time.

That's why both Martina and Ivan went to the States.

Sorry, did I miss something? Did the crowd boo him?
As far as I can see they just wanted the other fella to win. That not ok these days?
Wasn’t exactly USO 15 was it.
The crowd is fickle. No, they were not booing him but they were applauding his DF etc. Little things here and there. It's not right.

Some people just do not know how to behave when they watch tennis alive. It's like partisans. Nothing wrong to support one player but show respect to the other one too. The US crowd is the worst IMO.

I mean, imagine yourself being a tennis pro. Or, let's say you work at some office with 10 other people. Every day you come to work, your coworkers are booing you, nobody wants to talk to you etc. How would you feel?

I really believe that all us should try to be kinder to one another all over the world. Respect everyone. Have good manners. It's not that hard. :)

Applauding DF’s isn’t great but the crowd are still just encouraging their guy, surely? I didn’t feel any malice in the crowd, could be wrong of course and there’s always the odd idiot.
You’re preaching to the converted about respect and manners. But then the overwhelming opinion on this thread is that Novak should give a “stuff you” to a crowd that mostly wanted the other guy to win but was still applauding him at the end.
I have no issue with a partisan crowd. They wanted Federer to win and Djokovic disappointed them. Fans are fans, free to chant for who they want. It’s like telling the players box to shout for the opponents too. Some with tickets just go to watch a good match, others to support a player.
Besides, the last person to feel sorry for in this situation is a Big Three. What about all the tennis professionals who step onto Centre Court hopelessly outmatched, knowing people are only there to watch the other fella?

I have always agreed with this. I rooted for Lendl who was almost as unpopular as Novak and he treated the crowd like garbage, never acknowledging them or caring one damn about them. I've said for 10 years Novak should embrace the villain role and just give them the finger every time they boo or act up. It might be liberating for him, because the need to be loved by the crowd just makes them dislike him more. Just hate them back-- it might free him up even more. Give back what they give to you. Lendl acted that way his entire career.
One big difference - it is not plain ordinary crowd. Fed has a lot of fanatics out there. They were booing him.
So Novak doesn't need to play villain just because Fed fans told him to. He doesn't need whole world to hate him, just petty ones.
And this game you are playing is very nasty. Novak is not hated by ordinary spectator. Simple as that.

He didn't even say thanks to the crowd in his speech, lol.
Did Roger? Is it possible that both men were exhausted and just wanted to get off the court as soon as possible? Also, I think Novak did not want to upset Roger by over rejoicing in front of him after a very tough loss for Roger. Perhaps there IS some real respect between them?

I rooted for Lendl as well, due to the NY crowds being so pro Mac and Connors. However, I do thin Novak is much more popular than Lendl every was. Remember, that when Lendl first came onto the scene he was from a Russian Communist controlled country, which was a US enemy at that time. The same was true with Navratilova vs Princess Chrissie.

Nadal is not liked in Paris...his middle finger is the best of all...just win it for eternity!!

Djokovic might adopt same tactic at Wimbledon.

Wimbkedon crowd was worse of any major. In new york its part of the tradition. Not wimbledon

Guys do you think Novak’s heart-giving celebrations make him more genuine or ‘fake’? I have seen lots of people comment on him being ‘fake’ and probably that rather cringeworthy celebration added somewhat to that perception.

But if I think about it the other way, it actually makes him feel more genuine to me. He clearly wants some of that crowd for him, he’s been pretty open about that. And he’s been actively seeking their support through such gestures (whether or not it’s actually effective is another question). So being liked is what he intrinsically wants, and he wasn’t afraid of showing that. But by embracing the villain role he would then be doing something against what he really desires. Even though it may look better on him to just accept the villain role, but it would merely be a facade to hide the frustrations that he has, and I’m not sure that’s the best thing for him. Hope he understands that there is plenty of support for him, albeit smaller in numbers compared to Federer. When all is said and done, he will be well appreciated as part of the Big 3.

I'm not a Djokovic fan, probably never will be. I wanted Fed to win.

But screw the crowd any way! I would never cheer a mistake or an injury. It's just wrong. Cheer a great point, whoever makes it. Acknowledge greatness. Both players hit some incredible shots. Credit where credit is due...

Lendl also had "Ivan" as a given name.

That all by itself almost guaranteed villain status from the 1500s Europe ("Ivan the terrible") to 1980s USA (Ivan Drago)

Nadal is not liked in Paris...
A most ironic thing ever.

Crowd favourite everywhere except the one place he should be above all.

Yes, you do have a very good point here. We are talking about Novak and Fed here, different thing.

Still, people in general need to learn how to behave. Sure, you support one or another player but there is some tennis etiquette. It's not that Brits were so bad but, but .... I don't like it. Djokovic, obviously doesn't care any more. I've been pissed with his celebrations in the past. It was annoying. Yesterday he was perfect (y)

Novak is the strongest ever mentally. I think he has perfected blocking out monkey crowds at Wimb and red neck hooligans at uso. When asked he stated he transmutates haha ! And when he slips he just uses the biast crowds to fuel him. Jerks like Kyrgios can tweet all they like....

IMO the crowd was rooting for fed, but we're not disrespectful. Nothing close to usopen 2015. But I loved the smirk from Novak after the match. He was like 'didn't you guys like the hope I gave and the entertainment I provided to snatch the victory from your boy?'

Loved it every bit. I would rather have him riled up and end up winning matches like this than being a favorite

Are you talking about the smirk as he was walking to the net? That was a very interesting piece of body language. I still don't know whether that was Novak candidly responding to the occasion or whether it was a pointed gesture to the crowd, Federer or both.

Ive watched the match back in full twice now. There was a lot to analyse in that last set.

Oh, so to his parents.
Wwhen he point to the sky, he is pointing to his maker. He is saying a prayer.

Personally I find it refreshing. Thought it was cringeworthy until I realised what it actually was.

Case in point. Notice that he is wearing a red and black band, on each of his hands ? Those are basically prayer beads in the Orthodox Christian religion.

I said this to someone but next time the Wimbledon crowd should ROOT for Djokovic instead of Federer.

I swear it will confuse the heck out of Novak so much that his game will be messed up on so many levels lol because clearly going against him isn't working at all. It has the opposite effect

LOL , yes. The crowd actually cost Federer the match. All they needed to do was root for Novak like mad and that would seal the deal for Fed.

I see everyone loves the "just standing in the middle" celebration now. Fast forward to 1 or 2 more GS wins with the same style, poor dude will be bashed for it again.

I think generally France and Spain dont get on so there is alot to do with that dynamic then it got worse when Nadal kept winning year after year...then another few years...and then some more. Lol

I still prefer his celebration after winning the title of the US Open 2015.
He was very sarcastic that time.

Am I the only person who turns the TV over on match point so I never have to see the opposing player celebrate the win?

I don't think I've even seen Nadal or Djokovic celebrate beating Fed lol

The Martyr Game has taken another level. Even some Novak fans will be embarrassed to go back and read some of the threads made after this final. Novak is such an excellent player, but the way fans demand respect, like it matters more than results... And, for some reason, they seem to believe he should be more popular, because he wins. As it was a 'like' game. Perhaps the board is full of people who are too occupied with likes on all platforms of life?

I'm afraid the story of Djokovic will end up being a 'quest for love' or something along those lines in the eye of the public. Really sad. Reporters talk about it more than ever, it seems. Perhaps it's a result of our time's strong emocracy - feelings matter more than reason.

I think more people will like Djokovic if he just plays and proves how great he is, and let the crowds decide for themselves. That's basically how it works. It can't be forced. You get what you deserve. If Novak loves tennis more than popularity/ love/ respect, he should just let that love for the game shine through instead of trying so hard on those other things. Heck, even Kyrgios might shut up :giggle:

He didn't even say thanks to the crowd in his speech, lol.

it is about consistency in logic governing one's behavior.

When Djokovic feeds off of audience hating him and wins, he always says thanks to the crowd.

On Sunday something different happened by his own choice - he de facto ignored crowd, so he won without crowd's help.

Therefore, there was nothing to thank crowd for. That's why he did not thank as doing THAT would be FAKE.

it's rather obvious - simple to grasp, really.

I'd allow my co-workers to boo me if I was getting paid as much as Djoker . Getting boo'd whilst making millions for slapping a tennis ball around beats working 12 hour days , 6 days a week for standard wage . I'm a Fed fan , but I'm not fussed over the loss , I wish I had his millions too lol

P.s , to answer your question , I'd feel just fine & dandy :p
