Match toughness and match experience can be developed by playing match.
I hit with a ball machine probably a few times. Its a little bit predictable isn't it? You won't learn to watch your opponent hand and move accordingly.

I think 3.0 to 3.5, yes. Not sure about beyond that. Depends how good the ball machine is and how good the strokes are.

you’d need to know how to use the ball machine effectively but nothing can simulate match experience...

Only spending thousands on cash with a high level pro will only get you past 3.0-3.5

A smaller waist line and overall better health as well. Thats why i dont bang on guys trying to get better at tennis, pick up alot of good things along the way :)

If you consider ball machine and no a single ball touch apart from it - no. If you compare just matchplay to same amount of matchplay and ball machine - definitely a good assist. Up to lower 4.0 could work with nothing but this for a young fit body. Any higher, or being a middleaged, you need some basis of techniques, as self-developed strokes wouldn't do the job for you most likely. Therefore, basic coaching and keeping good understanding of what you've been coached, self-awareness and practical "anchors" to dial back your techniques if struggling, then lots of balls, both ball machine and life rallies, and match experience - altogether with like 1 match, 2 practice outings per week would be a decent starting point. Remember the serve as a separate, yet crucial element.

You cannot beat a ball machine. You can only not feed it. Feed it and it will survive off your sweat on the court.

To OP: ball machine > 3.0-4.0 player

You can build x level strokes by not playing matches.
But you cant build an x level player by not playing matches, doesnt matter what level ur strokes are.

These. ball machine can help improve strokes, but not ratings.

I have great strokes and hit with some high level folks, but having not played many matches until the end of last year and some the start of this year, there is no way to improve actual ratings. I can play high 3.5 or low 4.0, but hitting I can hang much higher. Matches and results are what make ratings.

I vote yes. Ball machines are invaluable, especially at a lower level. You can set it to give you any kind of ball you want to train (flat, hard, sitters, junk, volleys, lobs, etc).

All of that will make up for the lack of actual match play.

of course it can be done. 4.0 isn't exactly hard to get to or great tennis. You can get fitness stamina, hone strokes, movement footwork, practice your volleys and lobs too. More important you need to practice your serve and possibly the return against the machine. Absolutely it can be done.

I agree with your post but how do you practice a serve with a ball machine. I have a totally different approach to ball machines, I use a Ball machine to work on cardio conditioning while also grooving groundstrokes. I find 1 to 2 hours on a ball machine is a great workout.

If you look up in this forum someone made a platform. I mean you can even crank your machine up to max speed, max topspin with a high trajectory and it'll be like a kick serve.

You must be talking about return of serve, not the serve, I must have
misunderstood.

If you can beat NK in an ATP tour 1000 or GS match, you are way beyond the NTRP of 7.0 or UTR of 16! Just so you have something to shoot for!:giggle: NK only try in these tournaments unless his opponent is one of the big “3”, Rafa, RF or Djokovic.
