I thought I would start this thread since the PAC 10 comp is starting to get interesting with 2 big matches Stanford vs UCLA and USC next week.

I'm watching Stanford vs Cal on the web cam right now and gosh Clayton's game has been going down lately! He definitely played better last year. So many unforced errors on easy balls, it's sometimes painful to watch. He's still a great player, but could be so much better if he could keep his focus throughout the match.

Cal upset Stanford 4-3.

Stanford is a place you go to because of past reputation, not because the coaches can actually develop the potential of the players today. Highly recruited players come in and exit after four years not much better than they came in. Recruits might want to start considering that at some point.

Clark, I know you have posted this before...who in your opinion is developing potential in college tennis? There are lots of good coaches out there...just wondering who they are?

Bad result for Stanford! When is the last time they lost to Cal? Must be a while ago. To be true, Cal played really well, better than I would have expected them to. Zerbini played the match of his life against Klahn and this one was soooo close. Well done Cal, but that's really a step down by Stanford.

True, Dick Gould was THE MAN. Can't Stanford get another Dick Gould? This is such a waste to have some of the top juniors coming to Stanford and not giving them all the opportunities to develop as players. It seems to be the reality though today. Coaches just use great talents and do nothing for them. Sad.

I am a Virginia fan and get to watch them up close, so I see the improvement of players from year to year very clearly. It is one of the strengths of the program.

USC has developed some players pretty well; witness the leaps made already by Steve Johnson. I have seen significant improvement over four years from some top recruits at Georgia, Baylor, Kentucky, Notre Dame, Wake Forest, Texas, Texas A&M.

UCLA seems to attract the surfer dude mentality: music, parties, outside interests, etc. I always overestimate UCLA because I look at their roster on paper and see a lot of big names that I remember from past seasons, and I think they are going to be a killer team. Each year, they seem to be good but not as great as I anticipated.

Stanford is the same result but for different reasons; I have to assume that coaching is the main reason.

The players who go to Ivy League schools are definitely academics first, tennis second, and I don't usually see the development over four years that I would expect. Stanford could have some of that factor as well.

Klahn's match was a bit disappointing. He dominated in the 1st set and he let up a bit in 2nd set and it allowed Zerbini to become confident. he really used is big forehand well.

to come back on this match yesterday, I still think the coach should have had Kandath play 6 and Hirshman 5. Kandath losing a tight match again and Greg winning his 3 and 3, they would probably have won...

True, but I was impressed by Zerbini. I really thought Klahn would win it but Zerbini showed strong mental at the end.

yes and no. Stanford is very strong on academics but they also managed to build THE most successful tennis program in the US when Gould was in charge. They were #1 for so many years in a row in the 90s and early 2000s. So many successful players on the tour went to Stanford, so I don't think that academics is the only reason to go there if you're a top junior. That was true 5 or 10 years ago though, today I guess if you're a top junior and went to have a shot at the pros, you better go to Virginia or another top tennis school.

They are 9 and 2 this year pretty solid but it will be tough in the pac 10 season

Yes i agree. Cornelissen was talking about going Pro. and I think he has a future. He is very talented....

IMO the cool thing about tennis @ U of O is you play in a tough conference against top teams in the nation.

I had a chance to go to school and play there 25 years ago and declined it. Back then there was the 6-pac (CA+AZ), and nor-pac (OR+WA). Now the facilities and coaching staff are IMO substantially better.

IMO today they're still an outcast from the main action in the PAC-10; look at their results and standings in conference over the past 5-10 years. There was one talented guy who played there a couple years ago - Sven - and did pretty well.

I'm sure your buddy can tell you way more than anyone here will.

Great matches coming up this weekend. Stanford plays USC and UCLA. Lets sweep and get back on the winning road again. Cal bears lucky win will mean nothing in the long run. They probably won't even make it to georgia.

After the rain yesterday, Stanford hosts USC today! Big game in perspective, and you can watch it live on the Stanford webcam! Let's hope Stanford recovered from the last terrible showing against Cal. Go Stanford!

Wire and Hirschman started really strong, and are already leading 4-2 and 5-1 respectively. Come on guys.

Alex showed why he is the best in NCAA division 1 today. but the Doubles really killed them. #2 and #3 doubles have to be more consistant day in and day out. Can't have any lapses in doubles, especially against top teams. This one hurts but i think the guys will be stronger for it come NCAA tournament in Georgia. :)

True, this was a very tight match. #1 singles could have gone either way, high quality of play from both players, bad luck for Brad to loose that 1st set on the tie-break. Again doubles were so close, it could have been a win for Stanford. I think they showed that they were back on track, which is positive in the end.

i was dissapointed by numbers 4 and 5 singles for Stanford. If they want to win the PAC10 and have a shot at the NCAA title, they MUST have strong players at every position. I'm sorry to say, but IMO these two are not honoring their team... don't want to be harsh but there may be other guys in the team who might want to have a shot at playing too, and maybe win.

Not sure who that could be ?? Next guys up are, Denis Lin, Walker Kehrer and so on. Hirshman regularly beats up on Denis Lin at the moment. Rich Wire can still get you some good wins. Key is to catch fire at all positions when the NCAA comes around. Right now, it is almost as though they are taking turns winning and losing....:???: Clayton wins one day and loses next, and same with other guys like Kendath.

Stanford's next victim Utah on wednesday. then some great doubles action in Sandiego, CA. Pacific Coast doubles. Look for Alex Clayton and Rich Wire to take it all this year. They looked Awsome in practice today.................Go Cardinal. Lets show them what we are made of.

Dennis Lin and Kandath is not a strong doubles tandem. I dpn't see them winning against strong opponents. Kandath & Kerher may be better. Why don't they swap Kandath and Hirschman in the 5 and 6 position?
