Apart from the almost impossible physical challenge to be the agressor all the time, also think of it mentally.

There is nothing more frustrating than to play against Nadal, whose heavy topspin makes you look bad. If you attack with the mentality of winning the point right away, you are toast. Nadal loves this situations. You have to work out every point, prepare your head for multiple shots to follow, no matter how good your position on court is. Add to this the nasty psychological moves and deliberate time delays from Nadal we all know too well, and I actually think not losing your head against the Spaniard is the biggest challenge of it all.

I'll never forget how Söderling managed to be that calm. Him hiding his head under his towel, never losing focus, just tearing Nadal apart shot after shot. Oh how beautiful that day was, a shining beacon in the darkness that is Nadal on clay. It was a match for eternity, everybody will remember this one till the end of time.

Nadal injury + Soderling playing style + probability (Nadal has to lose now and then!) + right conditions for soderling = once in a blue moon opportunity for Soderling. Maybe the most famous tennis result ever?

I'm not saying I thought Robin had a chance in hell at winning, but in the 6-1 6-0 loss to Nadal a few weeks earlier, he was looking very competitive at times. Lot of games going to deuce and such, but he was just failing to convert. Thought maybe he could hang Nadal if he could bring a slightly higher level. Turned out he brought something even better.

Big hitting and wide serves worked well, which interestingly enough still seem to be a good recipe for success against Nadal. Soderling hits a flat serve out wide on ad side that was very good that match.

It seems such an anti-climax for Söderling that he couldn't carry over that epic win against Nadal into an equally epic win in the final (or win of any kind).

Talented as he was he just couldn't string big match wins together to land big titles (2010 Paris-Bercy is his sole big title).

Beating Fedal back to back in Slams is tough task. Only two players have managed it ao far.

After 12 years and you plus the vamos brigade are still butthurt about the loss.

Fact is Soderling was the better player and he beat Nadal convincingly. Deal with it !
After all these years, you, Fed devotees, are still over the moon with Rafa's loss. o_O o_O
Sod made a great job the next year, beating your beloved player.

Nadal played below par, and Soderling played very well. Usually Rafa finds a way out even when not playing great, but Soderling was absolutely crushing his ground strokes.

The OP(thread creater) is NOT a Federer fan.

This thread is about 2009 FO so stick to the topic rather than derailing it again like you always do.

nadal was suffering from debilitating injuries, his parents' divorce, the effects of fatigue caused by the Madrid SF some weeks ago, and his genetic congenital foot problem which had almost forced him into retirement as a teenager.

if anything, we should be congratulating such a humble warrior for overcoming such adversities to take the match to four sets

He did what Djokovic did in 2015 and almost did in 2013. Something that Federer could never come close to doing. I always say that Federer fans should build a statue of Soderling and worship it for all eternity because without him Federer would have never won RG.

Are you new to tennis? It's been discussed hundreds of times. Nadal was injured and that's all. A healthier Nadal demolished Soderling 61 60 a few weeks before.

It wouldn't be back to back. He had to beat Davydenko and González to get to the final. Still a great achievement though.
I didn't know it was only 2 players that managed it. Delpo did it once, I guess. How many times did Djokovic manage?

Maybe Djokovic fans should build a statue of Murray and worship him for all eternity for beating Wawrinka in the 2016 RG? Without that, he would never have won RG.

If you trully believe that 2015 Nadal was remotely close to any version of Nadal that Federer or Söderling faced in RG, you're delusional. His 2013 semi was in deed really impressive.
Just proves that Sod wasn't a fluke.

How many men in the past 20 years have been able to make back-to-back RG Finals, outside of Rafa?
Since the year 2000 (included):
Kuerten (2)
Ferrero (2)
Nadal (4+5+4)
Federer (4+1)*
Söderling (2)
Djokovic (3+2)**
Thiem (2)
* He didn't get to the final in 2005, but the semi was probably a de facto final.
* *He didn't get to the final in 2013, but the semi was probably a de facto final, and had made the final the year prior.
**Honorable mention: Wawrinka. Not back to back, but other than those mentioned, the only multi finalist

I was so nervous the 2010 final bc I thought Rafa would be. Plus Soderling was GOATing again and beat Fed. I can't believe how alpha Nadal was that day :D

LOL, Djokovic defeated the worst version of Nadal at RG ever. Never use that win to prop up Djokovic in comparison to Fed.

Djokovic Fans should build statues of Murray to worship him for taking out Djokovic's Tormentor ( Mr Stanimal ) at the 2016 FO or else Stan would have bludgeoned Novak and crushed him in the final with the Mighty Mjolnir of his Racquet.

Nadal Fans should just thank God for Putting Nadal in between Federer and Djokovic so perfectly that his peak was in a time when Fed was in his late 20s and Djokovic was just entering his early 20s, a perfect transition era from Fed->Djokovic where Nadal vultured some slams from 08-2010, or else Nadal would never have won the AO and probably even at the USO + Wimbledon he would have struggled to beat both Fed + Novak back to back in the semis + finals to win, 2 champions in their prime on their stronger surfaces would have buried the 1 trickpony,.

And what should Ultronians be thankful for? :)
