Rafa's Presser.

Humbalito is his second name.

I want someone translate me the Spanish part of the presser. That's always the part where he shows his real self.

Rafa is alway very humble in pressers till he gets to the courts and chews out his opponents and spits em out. 3 slams a year aint too bad. He's definitely got his mojo back after RG. Might be able to line up a personal slam with AO11.

I don't know how anyone can hate this guy.
I don't hate him. He is a good person. But like Roddick, competition brings out the worst in him - the fake injury timeouts (plural!) against Petzschner at Wimby when getting soundly beaten, the stalling at the start of matches and taking too much time between points, and the continued coaching (Uncle Toni telling him where to stand to receive serve from Verdasco in the QF, even PMac spotted it, he's not exactly Matlock) is troubling...

I don't hate him but I strongly dislike him, perhaps more than any other player on tour. I'll try t explain why:

1- I strongly dislike humility in sports and in the case of Nadal, I especially dislike it because he comes accross as a bit fake. I haven't even read the presser you're posting but I don't have to because he's always saying the same things about every match (it will be very complicate, no?, i will have to play at my best, he's a tough rival, i'm happy to be playing here, etc, etc.) which kind of implicates the idea that he doesn't really dare to say what's on his mind.

2- I strongly dislike his game. I'd say he's got the ugliest game in the top 10 right now.

3- In general, I dislike players who scream when making a shot. Nadal is one of those.

4- He picks his butt. It's not that bad, I guess but it does get a little bit annoying with time.

5- He takes too much time for serving. The most in the top 10 apparently.

6- He's known for asking for injury time-outs when he's losing. I don't like it as I think in some cases it's just an strategy to un-focus your opponent.

7- On court coaching from Uncle Toni at times (although this seems to have decreased as years have went by fortunately).

I cheer against him when he plays Federer but other than that I love the guy and his personality. I am rooting for him today.

The reasons I dislike Nadal are not his pressers. I dislike Nadal because to me he's a cheater and abuses rules.

I have heard people say that Nadal abuses the time limit when serving but how is he a cheater? Soderling is a cheater when he pointed at the false ball mark against Nadal. I havent seen this kind of behavior from Nadal, as a matter of fact, I have seen Nadal give some really generous line calls to his opponent.

isnt cheating defined as abusing the rules to gain a personal advantage?

nadal does this when he takes longer than the recquired time to serve (as he usually does) and when he requests advices from uncle toni on court.

i don't know, i've never liked him. i don't like his game play style, I don't like how much time he takes between points, i don't like his accent, i don't like his mean mug when he's on court, and i especially don't like his nice guy persona that is obviously fake (at least sometimes).

having said that, my favourite tennis player of all time is safin. he was hilarious and always said things like they were.

Time wasting, on court coaching, fake injuries, and many other un gamesmanship-like stunts. Used to like Nadal's personality, but even since Wimbledon I can't stand the sight of him. I admit it.

Humble comments huh? What did you expect him to say? Yes I am well on my way to become the GOAT & crush each & every one of Sampras, Laver, Federer's record? :-?

Everything looks good when the guy is winning I guess...

Yes, yes & yes. +1

It's very easy to be humble in your pressers after you win...but his on-court antics are what really matter & they suck!

The umpires, referees, tournament officials and other players must be quite oblivious to his obvious cheating considering they don't say anything...

Haters gonna hate.

Vid please. A clear one preferable with good audio. Or was it hand signals?

He has been warned several times in the past...but as he is becoming bigger & bigger, the officials seem to be kissing his *** instead of trying to enforce the rules of the game.

Haters gonna hate.

Yeah so please stop hating on Federer...

Why do some people dislike Nadal?

1. Because they can't ruffle his feathers, as he plays at his own pace at all times.

2. Because he plays in the grinding style rather than the more traditional style.

3. Because he dared to challenge Federer when Federer was an unstoppable force in the game.

4. He always takes each match as it comes and always tries to improve something that will make him a better player.

5. Because he's nice and humble in interviews and press conferences.

Sorry, the USO matches in the wind were hardly worthy of being saved on my DVR hard disk. If you have ESPN3.com access the match may still be up there. PMac said it was a clear hand signal by Uncli Toni motioning for Rafa to move up. I don't think they could hear from their box. And I haven't heard that PMac is fluent en espanol..

1. No
2. No
3. No &
4. No

People dislike him because,
1. He abuses the rules & disrupts his opponents rhythm on important points by wasting time.

2. Pretends to be injured almost every time he comes out losing in a big match.

3. He gets illegal coaching from his uncle in the stands when things don't go his way.

4. Plays mind games & is disrespectful to his opponents by making them wait until his highness finishes his rituals...

That's basically a Nadal hater's way of saying that they can't ruffle his feathers and make Nadal play at a quicker pace.

2. Pretends to be injured almost every time he comes out losing in a big match.

It's irrelevant to the result. A win is a win and a loss is a loss.

3. He gets illegal coaching from his uncle in the stands when things don't go his way.

And he's gotten code violations for it. The problem was dealt with there and then.

4. Plays mind games & is disrespectful to his opponents by making them wait until his highness finishes his rituals...

They're not much cop as professional players if they let that put them off. I suppose they'd prefer McEnroe, Connors, Lendl or Nastase instead. They make the worst behaved players on court today look like saints.

That's his interpretation, nothing more. It could also have meant "don't lose ground, come back to the baseline after you hit, don't hang back". This is something Rafa obsesses about on HC, to not get pushed back. He also talked about it a couple of times in the USO pressers. And this is hardly a major tactical move, it's not something that Nadal can't see when he is playing.

Bollettieri had an article in 2006 about coaching on court, when he said that 2/3 of juniors get coached in some way during a match but said that he couldn't figure out how Rafa and his uncle do it(this was in relation to Fed's accusations). And I think he knows how to recognize the signals.

6. Because he fakes injuries to destroy his opponent's momentum.

7. Because when #6 doesn't work, he just quits the match so the media writes about him being injured rather than his opponent outplaying him.

8. Because he frequently receives illegal coaching.

9. Because his service games are painfully long even if he wins them easily. A love game feels like a game with at least 3 deuces, no doubt thanks to time wasting. (of course he's ranked #1 in biggest time wasters list)

10. Because the opponent has to wait for Nadal to get out of his chair all the time.

11. Because he's not polite to opponents during coin toss, he's jumping aggressively in front of their faces.

12. Because when Verdasco made an unforced error Nadal not only fist pumped (which is fine in general), he fist pumped to Verdasco's face.

13. Because he is dishonest in interviews.

14. Because he's a phony, when he mishits a ball and it touches the baseline he will take the point but when his opponent wins the point in the same fashion Nadal will not be respectful to that.

15. Because as a proud supporter of the challenge system, Nadal will complain about Hawkeye when its not going in his favor.

Believe it or not, while I don't like his tennis, it is far from being my problem with him. Far.

It's still coaching! LOL!

@Mustard, 'a win is a win' is true - but the OP stated 'how can anyone hate (modern term for respect) Rafa'. So you're off topic. We're talking about character/likeability, not W-L record.

I think part of the reason why Nadal's interviews always seem kind of unnatural, is the language. Though he's improved, his English is far from perfect. I read a long Spanish (translated) interview of his some time ago, and he seemed much more 'open' in that one. It's always more difficult to express your exact feelings in a language other than your own.

My posts would also be much better if I were to write in Dutch or German...

Trying to convinve a Nadal fan that Fed is better and vice versa is like trying to argue with somone about religion. You can't do it, so forget it.

They hate him because he's the world number 1, he destroys Federer (their idol), and he's cleaning up all the slams.

It's just a case of resentment. Ignore them.

I taped it on TTC and ESPN. I even went back and watched it.

On ESPN, Rafa made a motion with his hands like players do when they're complaining about the wind. JMac said he was asking Toni for advice. Toni just sat there and offered no response. JMac did acknowledge that as well.

On TTC, they didn't show anything. Jensen just made the allegation. Shortly after receiving the text message from JMac. They all want to be on one accord, imo.

But, on a side note, you should try to catch Jimmy Connors on TTC. He's a straight shooter for real. When Shiras tried to put that stupid stuff out there, Jimmy shot him down every time.

When I get some time I'm going to post his gems. Shiras was so embarrassed.

So many of the "arguments" people make around here, he shoots down on a daily basis. I can't believe how much I like Jimmy Connors!
