It's like asking if you like rock or not.

There are a million genres.

Yes much rap is great. Some is lame. Just like most music.

Country on the other hand is horrible 99% of the time. Johnny Cash I appreciate.

usually something like a series of tones arranged in some rhythm or beat to be pleasing or interesting
There are lots of definitions. Some more subjective than others. Most will contain the words “sound” and “time”.

Yes, while it's not the genre I listen to the most, I do like rap / hip-hop.

Not nearly all of it, but that's true of any genre of music.

Hip-hop for me is gebrauchsmusik (utility music). It gets me in a particular mood that other music doesn't. Such as getting pumped. Some hip-hop is great at parties as well.

Hip-hop quite obviously tends to have plenty of melody (and harmony), just not always in the vocals. (Though it's not uncommon that they have refrains that are sung in a traditional manner.)

Best to think of it as rhytmic poetry performed over music. Much of it makes for terrible or puerile poetry, granted, but some of it is good as well as rhytmically interesting.

Not only is rap music by any textbook definition, it is THE dominant musical genre today that informs all other popular genres and beyond. To ask this question in this day and age is akin to what those fuddy-duddies used to ask about rock & roll as Berry and his peers and successors were beginning to make music more democratic than ever. And I say that as a millennial (an admittedly older one) who likes melody himself and prefers classical and jazz (particularly bop and hard bop) by a wide margin.

What is a good definition of music?
usually something like a series of tones arranged in some rhythm or beat to be pleasing or interesting

The leanest and most inclusive (read: best) definition: organized sound.

Do you know anyone who likes listening to classical music and rap?

Yes. Me-self, for one. :p

From Public Enemy to A Tribe Called Quest (or their recent incarnation at any rate) hip hop has always managed to offer trenchant commentary on our world at large that few other musics are capable of, and while it may be a cliche to describe hip hop as street poetry there's no doubt its street origins set it apart from its more middle-class peers from the get-go.

Besides no objective listener could fail to appreciate the time-bending groove of a Kendrick Lamar or the virtuosic wordplay of an Eminem. That's simply good music, or music that rewards active listening at least.

I will add that I don't care for the almost cartoonish misogyny of much popular hip hop (or its widespread homophobia though it's gotten better in recent years), but rap is still in its relative infancy and will outgrow its prejudices as it grows more mainstream.

That said I really like all music. There are certain genres I'm not very partial to (metal and most electronic music which all sounds the same) but even there I've got my exceptions.

There is a lot of beauty in rap, especially from artists like Drake. Granted, I would say most rap (his and most everybody elses) is vulgar and not great, but there are gems of lines.

From When to say when:

Ayy, thirty-three years, I gave that to the game
Thirty-three mil, I'll save that for the rain
Five hundred weeks, I fill the charts with my pain

You gotta find the good lines and ignore the rest. He used some vulgar language in the song that contains the lines I'm about to post:

This ain't the life that I'm used to
Reintroduced to people I've been introduced to, did you forget me?
Or are you too scared to tell me that you met me
And fear that I won't remember?
I wish you could still accept me for me
I miss Memphis, Tennessee, my cousins, my dad
The simplistic beauty that all of them Southerners have
I'm halfway across the world with dozens of bags
Feeling like all four members of Color Me Badd

I thought the task was to provide a definition of music. You offered one. I was asking if organized is a necessary component.

Do you understand?

You clearly have an idea what music is, otherwise you wouldn't have framed the question that way. To put it bluntly I was pointing out the circular reasoning of your latest Socratic routine.

If you do want an honest discussion let's hear your own definition of music. I've already provided mine.

1. Sound in time
2. Time organized by sound

Notice, in 2 that the sound isn’t organized, it does the organizing. Of time.

So again I ask you, does sound need to be organized to be music. I’m saying no. I’m interested in your opinion.

Initial rap artists like MC Hammer, Eminem and such made really interesting music that also had melody and good rythm. As the genre became more commercial, there appeared many bad artists supposedly making music and bad quality became widespread. Noawadays whenever I hear rap music on the radio, I usually change the station.

I consider intent an essential ingredient of art so I don't agree with your definition. Per my own definition John Cage's 4'33" would qualify as music because the audience is invited to partake in the ambient noise for a definite period of time. I'd also argue that even natural sounds often referred to as music like birdsong have an element of intent, even though we may not understand exactly what it is because the sounds are not produced by humans.

John Cage thought that any sound can be music, saying, for example, "There is no noise, only sound."

I know and perhaps I should've said "ambient sound." But music still requires active participation or "organizing" on the part of the listener. In fact the very notion of "sound" vs. noise implies some level of order.

It’s an interesting topic of discussion. Certainly, there are many opinions.

The more interesting question to me is, what do people enjoy listening to as music and why.

Also, every culture has had music. Why is that? Why is it so fundamental to humans?

Further, what is it about music that it has such a profound effect on humans at a basic or primal level?

The social/communal aspect is certainly a big part of it. I mean you've gotta be a complete hermit not to notice that people tend to like music they grew up with and our tastes are not as open-ended as we like to think.

I'll defer to seasoned ethnomusicologists to answer your questions (except maybe the last one which I don't think is answerable) but one thing I'll add is that music isn't a "universal language" or a language of any sort. That's the one big takeaway I still remember from my old ethnomusicology textbook (in its very first chapter to boot!) and I'll see if I can dig up a relevant quote or two.

I don’t like it.
Often way too emo and self loathing texts. It’s like “tough men” in a victim mode.
50cents and snoop type of rap is ok, but that’s more melodic.

Here is the undoubted Queen of Soul stepping in for the contemporary King of classical opera at a moment’s notice:

The crossover potential of those supposedly polar opposite music genres was part of the plots of the French film Intouchables (2012) and its American remake The Upside (2017) when the two black and lower class assistants to a paraplegic upper class white man first go to an opera and birthday party featuring classical music performances in the company of their disabled employers. I haven’t seen the entire French film but the Kevin Hart/Bryan Cranston exploration of the fact we are a lot closer to each other than we as far apart as most think does make for being an optimist even in tough times like we’re going through now.

Queen of pipes forever and for her to celebrate the queen of lyrics in my formative years of music appreciation Carole King was outstanding! King and her husband, the late Gerry Goffin, two Jewish kids from Brooklyn that wrote so many songs that Berry Gordy incorporated into Motown’s sound in the 60s (Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, Some Kind Of Wonderful, Up On The Roof, One Fine Day, A Natural Woman) was emblematic of union we had in a really divisive social era.

We got through that crap. Let’s get through this sh11tstorm and be brothers and sisters once more.

If you play Country music backwards, your girlfriend doesn't walk out on you, your dog doesn't die, and you get out of jail.
What do you get when you combine Country and Rap?
CRap.
