Record - Most Consecutive Years Top 2 in the World

As a worshiper of Federer, I am deeply saddened that Federer won't be able to finish 2008 as the year end number one player. However, I take some solace in knowing that with Djokovic's loss yesterday and Federer's victory yesterday, Roger is almost assured of finishing the year ranked number two.

While he won't be able to tie, much less, break Sampras' record for most consecutive years as the year end number one player, I would love to see Roger have the record for most consecutive years as the year end number one or two player in the world. The current record is six, shared of course by Connors, McEnroe, and Sampras. Assuming he finishes number 2 this year, Federer could break this record next year.

Impressive or no?

Maybe he breaks the record for most years at Nr.2 (what a wonderful record to have). Rosewall by the way was Nr. 1 or 2 for at least 15 years.

Even as a Federer fan myself, #2 YE means squat.

Which isnt a record which would be praised. It would be just like how Lendl doesnt get much extra praise (rightly or wrongly) for all those additional slam finals he made and lost, and his record of being in more slam finals then anyone else despite only winning 8 of 19. In fact it probably would have been better for him if he had not made many of those finals he lost at all.

Same with Ivanisevic.

Lol, your proposed record is a joke. Nobody cares about the number 2 year end record. Lol!!! I guess there's one impressive record that Roger will never overtake Sampras. ;)

LOL. Year end blah blah blah.......... Sampras would trade his left @$% for Federer's career. The year end ranking is a novelty.

I really don't think Sampras would trade his 7 wimbledon titles for Federer's 5 or his record # of slams and #weeks at #1. If Federer wins the French, then maybe Sampras will be envious but otherwise I think he'll stay happy with what he did...

I bet Sampras would like 5 straight U.S Open titles, as opposed to having 5 while never winning more then 2 in a row. I bet Sampras would like 3 different 3-slam years as opposed to 0. I bet Sampras would like to be the first man in history to do the Wimbledon-U.S Open double even three times, let alone four as Federer did. I bet Sampras would like 3 Australian Open titles as opposed to only 2. I bet Federer would like the record for most consecutive weeks at #1. I bet Sampras would like to have been in 3 straight French Open finals instead of only 1 semifinal. There are many things about Federers career Sampras would rather have then his own, and as time goes on those the list will only get longer, and the list of things Sampras has that Federer would rather have will only grow shorter still. In time the 6 year end #1s in a row might be the only thing.

Interestingly, Sampras has stated in the past he finds the six year end number 1s his greatest achievement and has explained how hard he worked to do it since he thought it was such an accomplishment. I'm pretty sure Federer would like to win Wimbledon 7 of 8 years, as well as having 50 more weeks at number 1 as well as two more year ends....of course they wouldn't be in a row. Somehow I think both guys will be satisfied with their careers.

Couldn't agree more. Noone is going to exactly duplicate every stat known to man. If it did there wouldn't be the endless GOAT arguments and theories about which is better. Both should be very proud of what they accomplished!

I agree too.. what they both did is just freakin amazing, and they're probably really proud of what they've accomplished.

Hum you have some funny ideas from where I stand but let's take your arguments one by one. Who cares about straight or not as long as one has the 5 USO titles? Maybe Pete would rather trade with any of the 3 guys who won the USO 7 times! I don't know about calendar year but Sampras won 3 slams at the age of 22 and 3 slams at 25, not that wildly different from Fed who won 3 slams at 24 and at 25, you could also argue that Sampras encountered success in slams at a younger age than Fed and is still ahead in total # of slams at this point. I still think Pete'd rather keep his 7 W (which is an absolute record) to grabbing an extra AO. 3 AO is not that significant anyway, Emerson won AO 6 times and a bunch of other guys won it 4 times. Pete would have loved to win FO for sure, people dream of winning stuff, not being finalists! and at least he won Rome, one of the most prestigious tournaments you can win on clay (along with M-C) after FO. Finally you mention 6 year ending at #1 as if it was a detail, another absolute record that is quite awesome, why in heaven would he want to relinquish something that exceptional? All in all, both guys had a tremendous career but it's not clear to me why they would be so envious of the other as they both have plenty to be proud of in their own right. If you want we can both go to see Pete and ask him which one of us he would most agree with, any time, I'm ready!

Yes that is very impressive IF? he can do it which i think he has great chance he can however a lot of younger are booming in the ranks and its a question how long the veterans can hold em off before they take over Aggasi did a great job holding his spot light against the younger guys can Federer do it???
