Rune is on a winning streak of 13 matches, and has only lost 3 sets. 2 challengers in a row and 3 matches in the qualifying draw. Impressive for a 18yo. Amazing opportunity for his first match in a slam... or bad luck. I can see him taking a set against a rusty Djokovic.. kind of like Jack Draper in Wimbledon.

This is not some jinx post against rune.

Ive been saying since wimbledon djokovic has flattered to deceive and later i think rune will tear him apart.

Rune does everything bigger here now in 2021 and with nole's cumbersome movement i can see him getting creamed in straight sets.
Rune? The Danish kid ?

Will definitely lose another 3 sets and get sent packing by the Serbian World no 1.

Nole's movement isn't what it used to be, by any means. And Rune likes to run. If this was clay, I'd pick the young gun to take the match, but with this being hard court, I'm not convinced yet that he can pull it off. He's very good, but is he really good enough?

Holger’s chances are doomed until roughly 2025 if we compare your Sureshian jinx impact on a young Casper Ruud from Rio’17. I was just about to endorse Joe Kovic losing a set but now that Rune has sparked loyalty from you, Joe Kovic in 3 and there will be bread. The Serb has a very long straw for poaching some milkshake.

Ruud didn't need a jinx to disappoint.

I see. Still, even without it I think Ruud would have hit a wall.
Just review the first 10 pages or so of The Ruud Awakening thread for perspective. Meles drank his own Kool-Aid and OD’d while a few of us who liked the young Norwegian but saw his limitations at the time were excoriated by the bandwagoner for trying to rein it in on his hype.

I feel like a Musetti like early lead followed by a rapid collapse isn’t that out of the question

just because Djokovic hasn’t played since the Olympics, and Rune has made his way through qualifying so should be sharp

Rune is Borg's middle name. Can Holger the pup channel the GOAT? First slam match on Ashe probably in front of a night audience probably not the best place to start in doing so :-D

It should also be noted that Novak has played two of his 21 major matches against teenagers this year, and they were probably his two least convincing matches of their respective tournaments.

Well you know something, Mean Meles, me and all my Djokomaniacs are ready to drink the sweat from the devil's armpit, man. We will be ready to Rune wild at the US Open, Jack. Now whatcha gonn do when Novak Djokovic and the grandslam record runs wild on you?

Great to see you back, mate.

Rare for a you g player to have these types of runs. I don’t have all the numbers in front of me, but rarely do you see 17-18 year olds in the modern game have runs like these and not become forces on tour.

Rune will feel the pressure not only facing Djokovic but knowing he is playing for the chance to win me over as an official supporter of his.

Good try.
Djokovic loses? Full profit.
Djokovic wins? Everybody forgets about this thread.

That's exactly who shouldn't feel the pressure. The young player in the first round who is counted out. The worst they can do is lose.
Ever since he was 8 years old, Djokovic has been the best player in the world except for a brief injury interlude. I wouldn’t be surprised if the aura of stopping a GOAT player like that from achieving history is an overpowering spotlight that is too much for an 18-year old. A lot of kids of that age and younger probably grew up idolizing Novak.

From the second week of February until the US Open qualifying matches this past week, all of Rune's matches have been on clay in Europe, mostly at the Futures and Challenger levels. In fact, coming to New York was the first time he's played outside of Europe in nearly 2 years. And he's never won a main draw hard court match ever... and this is the first Slam he has qualified for. Unless Djokovic gets injured or hits an official again, there is no way he's going to lose a best of 5 match at the US Open to this kid.

”Rare,” and not “never.”

Dmitrov‘s run was when he was a bit older at 19+. I suppose he never became a “force,” but he did reach #3, win 8 titles, reach 15 total finals.

Gasquet I give you. 15-16 years old and competitive, and never improved his return or second serve or movement. 15 titles and 32 total finals on Tour not bad, though.

You’re right about Coric though injuries have derailed him.

Good thing Gasquet didn't have serious injuries early on or we would have a brigade of followers singing injuries stopped him from becoming the next Federer
