Ryan Sweeting is on the rise.

The 2005 US Open Junior Champ, Ryan Sweeting wins his first round match against Justin Gimlestob 7-6, 6-2. So I guess this means that he won't be going back to Univ. of Florida. Some of you guys might know Sweeting from his defeating Maria Sharapova while at IMG Academies.

Nice to see a fellow gator doing well out there. Uf has put some quality players in the pros in the last 20 years and Sweeting has a ton of game.

Pretty good, pretty good. Querrey, Sweeting - they don't seem like they'll be the next Agassi's or Samprases, but maybe they'll keep US tennis from "dying" like everyone says it is.

Nah, US tennis isn't dying, we just had it too good for quite a while and got used to it.

He played Sharapova?

Yes he did, 7-5, 6-3, when she was the no. 1 player in the world and when Sweeting was the no. 4 junior. Which is all the more puzzling to me that some of you guys on this board seem to think the top women players can compete with any of the guys on the ATP tour.

I watched the first set of his match tonight against Gimelstob. He came up with incredible, ripping passing shots. He's got a great serve, as well. Very promising indeed!

Who are these guys who claim that women players can make it on the ATP tour?

Sweeting won the first match in the first ATP event he ever played. Not bad at all, given that Gimmel is in a decent shape as of late.

Henin, Mauresmo or Clijsters would give guys the most trouble due to the style of their game. Sharapova hits flat hard strokes doesn't move nearly as well as any of them. If Ryan only beat her 7-5 6-3 and he was trying I think anyone of those three may have had a shot with how he was playing at the time. I'm not saying any of them can beat ATP pros but I would think they would have the best shot due to the style of their game especially Henin at her best.

Ryan was a junior when he beat Sharapova and not even the top ranked one. And Mauresmo, Clijsters, and Henin could take an ATP pro? I think they sould try there hands against some D1 college players before they try to make the leap playing against ATP pros.

The first set was the best quality tennis that I saw tonight.

Thats why i said with how he was playing at the time. If he was the number 4 junior player in the world at the time I'm sure he could take a lot of DI college players who are talented but aren't going pro. My guess is Henin playing well could have taken him if she was in Sharapovas place since the score was 7-5 6-3 this assuming ryan was going all out. I think Henin's movement/defensive ability/strokes would have given her a great chance seeing that sharapova managed 5 games in the first set.

Ok, believe what you will. I have zero doubt that JHH would get smoked if she played 1-10 nationally ranked college players. And I'm pretty sure that Sweeting would whip up on her too.

henin would have most likly retired from the match after loosing the first due to an up set stomach:rolleyes:

Hahaha, oh how true. She will come up with some fake sickness after being down 0-5

sweeting got suspended from florida because he got a DUI for drug and alcohol possession. clearly an up and coming role model.

Well, now that just blows. When did this happen? I thought that he couldn't play the rest of the year because of the DWI and possession charges.

Is Sweeting a big hitter when it comes to miles per hour on the serve? What type of grip he has on the forehand and backhand?

Well, he's from the Bahamas, I believe, so I don't think we can really claim him, but if he gets good enough who knows ? We could have Tursonov and Sweeting playing singles and if one of the Bryans gets hurt throw Knowles in there....

Sweeting actually has dual citizenship now.

Sweeting is 19 years old.I read somewhere that he is 6'4, is he that tall? How does he move?I say his because of Berdych, he is talented but i feel his movement will always be a problem from him doing anything.

When did defeating Gimelstob become a sign of promise. Sweeting was a
+305 underdog in this match. Good win but it's only one match. He's a +261 underdog against Clement. Let's see if he can pull off another upset.

Actually him winning his first round of his first ATP tourney is pretty impressive. Esp. since he's only played a few matches at UF.

Henin would have probably won the first game in a second set after being smoked 6-0 in the first and then retire. I'm sorry I just don't put her on such a high pedestal after that crap she pulled at Aussie Open.

And he fought his way through qualies, too - so that makes four matches he's won. Though the first three were in qualies and not in the main draw, the qualies are still challenger-level tennis.

Just watched Sweeting play in Carson. He's got some big shots. Huge serve and big forehand. He actually moves pretty well and he's also got a nice slice backhand.

Major mental case. He was playing Nishikori, who I didn't know was only 18 yo. Ryan was playing out of his mind the first few games. Not sure who won, had to leave before it ended.

Sweeting's got a pretty big serve though and pretty decent kick on
his second serve. There aren't any serves on the WTA even removely
close to his.

Also saw the Sweeting/Nishikori match. Up 6-2, 5-2 Sweeting was
acting all cocky... then Nishikori finally started clawing his way back into
the match. Nishikori eventually won 6-2, 7-6 (12?), 6-4, but I think
Sweeting probably has more upside unless Nishikori continues to grow
taller. The guys in the top 200 will make him work too hard to hold
serve consistently. Sweeting's got got a pretty big forehand that he
is able to hit from almost anywhere b/c he has pretty good footwork.
Not sure about his mental game, He was cursing, slamming balls out
of the court, arguing the with the chair umpire and even smashed his
racquet in half on the ground after losing the
tiebreak. Wonder what he did after he lost the match.
