Good on him.

But will never ever like him. Imagine if he ever moved to Barcelona. I would have to stop supporting Barcelona.

That's awesome, great work by Serena and Sharapova too for that matter! Surprised to see no top male tennis stars on this list but guess i'm not the one to judge that, perhaps the others on the list just give a lot more... although I wouldn't have thought Tom Daley or hell even Bethany Hamilton would have that much money to give away!
Bethany won the amazing race with her husband (prize money $1 million), amazing life story, lost her arm to a shark at age 13 but went on to compete professionally in surfing and just such a lovely person. $1 mill might sound like a lot of money but considering Murray just got like $2.5 mill for his 2 week Wimbledon win or the fact that Fed and Djoko have earned over $100 mill in tennis prize money alone, you'd think they could give more.

The problem with these lists is that those who donate anonymously are, well, donating anonymously, so it doesn't mean others aren't donating.

I remember all the hoopla over Jobs not being a philanthropist and Gates giving all that money away. After Jobs died it was revealed he was quite the philanthropist, he just did it anonymously.

Lists like this only means these are the ones we know, so I wouldn't be too hard on those not on the list. We have no way of knowing.

Even still you'd expect to see someone like Federer near the top of the list. It's always good publicity and God knows the media always love giving fed good publicity. And these sort of things always get out.
I'm quite surprised by the list. Even as a fan I knew Serena was charitable but I wouldn't have known she would be in the top 3 and anywhere close to ronny.

This has to be based on percentage of income donated, not total. I mean Yuna Kim, a figure skater (had to google her) and Hamilton (female surfers make zilch)? There is no possible way they can donate the amounts the top Soccer and NBA and Serena do etc etc can.

Quick search gives Hamilton TOTAL net worth of 1.5 mil. Kim isn't even listed!

edit: if you look closer Kim is being honored for being a goodwill ambassador not for amount donated. I imagine the top dogs just give money, the lesser known probably actually volunteer a lot - both of which are great!

I always feel about her that jerk antics on court is a little bit for on court intimidation. She is tally different outside of court.

There's no way of knowing unless they want it to be known, that's the only way it can get out. So Fed could very well be the most charitable or it could be any other athlete not on the list. Just no way to know.

The list has nothing to do with who donates the most money.

OP should read articles before he makes misleading threads.

The herp derp is strong in here.

Just from the grammar in the title of his thread you could tell something was up. Serena is the 3rd athlete in history to donate the most money to charity is essentially what it's saying.

And yeah, if you could actually read rf-18, that list was created by a site based on votes from visitors to said site. The site says "vote for your favorite athlete." Favorite has nothing to do with charity unfortunately. I also had no idea this site even existed so who knows how many votes they actually get.

Criteria, accd'ng to AthletesGoneGood.com.

1) Public Vote
2) Social Media Influence
3) Advice we take from ourselves, here at AthletesGoneGood.com

Which in essence means that the three criteria are...

1) Bait so you'll visit our site
2) Bait so influential Social Media whores will backlink to our site
3) Whoever we want it to be

LOL.

Interesting that Messi contributes nothing and also cheats the tax man.

Of course he was never truly the football GOAT (lack of an international title meant he was always behind Maradona and Pele, and now arguably Ronaldo in his own generation). But he's also been shown up as an immoral criminal.

Isn't Mo'ne Davis the twelve year old little league pitcher? Where does she get that kind of money to give away, or am I thinking of the wrong person?

fedr really wanted to spend his life flipping burgers at McD's, but instead decided to donate away his whole life to meaninglessly hitting tennis balls in order to give ultimate joy, love and xstacy to the human species.

You know the biblical verse (KJV, Matthew 6:1): "Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven." Don't be too wowed by conspicuous donation. You're fooling yourself if you think placing high (or low) on such lists is a fair measure of the person's true generosity.

Now this is when our behavioral psychologist/economist chimes in with the chestnut that status is a strong motivator in our social activities. Which is true, of course, but I like to think there are still some people out there who can and do transcend such tribal instincts.

Exactly. Long way from actually writing checks.

And for guys like Fed, Nadal, and Djokovic, who have their own Foundations and may put their own money into them - so they know exactly how the money is spent, they could be much more giving. And actually getting results. But not interested in getting their backs patted.

I don't think this list can be accurate. Does it mention the exact amounts they have donated.

For example, it has Saina Nehwal in 18. I suppose Saina donates more than our top tennis players acco to this list. However, Saina plays badminton, and badminton earns very little compared to tennis. There is NO WAY Saina could be donating more that Federer / Nadal, she probably barely meets her expenses.

That article seemed like a plant from CRon's publicist. Sounds like nonsense and has nothing to do with what athletes actually donate from their own pocket since nobody could possibly know that information.

Jeez. Talk about taking the bad from the good. Can't you just commend her charitability and move on? Why must you knock her?

Hey, I am trying to point out that she hardly earns anything. Badminton is played by very few countries and the winnings are pitiful. She has achieved A LOT by the way. Please do not think it compares to tennis. She may be making some money on endorsements within the country though, but again not a drop in the ocean of what the cricket players earn.

i respect her a lot for where she has reached, I would not knock her.

She's teamed up with some shoe manufacturer to design and endorse a line of shoes, where 15% of the proceeds go to some charity. Which I suppose is something.

Not really.
There are a lot of instance where CR7 has paid a lot of his money to charity. He donated his bonus of 600k for winning the Champions league to charity. He's paid for a lot of peoples surgery bills that the families couldn't pay for.
Even at the age of 19 he saw a kid on TV after a tsunami aftermath with a Portuguese jersey with his name and number on the back who lost everything. He sponsored that kids education and now the kid is all grown up and playing for sporting Lisbon I think.
ronniehas a big heart.

I'm not saying he's not generous. Just that nobody can possibly know what people donate privately so they can't reliably list who is most generous. So the list is kinda bogus.
